  • "I am so very happy at this... dreadful news." God, I love Emma!

  • why is harriet not in this scene 3:35

  • Isabella: "Mrs. Churchill is dead!"

    John: "Why should we care?"

I'm beginning to think I like John better than George... Sacrilege!

  • @47thUsername Why should we care lol

  • "Frank may do as he chooses!" .... but wait a second... nobody quite knows exactly what that will be.

  • "I might need a good half day to think about this!" Ah the life of a pre-Victorian lady!

  • I love how most comments to these kind of movies are written like, well as if they came straight out of a Jane Austin novel in such perfect English :)

  • 4:20 he didn't kiss her hand!!!!

I always knew I never liked the gwyneth paltrow version but I never knew how much until I saw this one. You can actually feel Emma's pain and sense her transforming into a better person in a way that you can't in that one.

  • she got played. can't say that i am terribly sorry

  • I wish she actually apologized to Miss Bates.

  • What does Mr. Woodhouse mean by Wonderlust?? 4:35

  • @killedbyAP He said wanderlust, as in a urge to wander (leave home) and travel.

  • I think the eldest Mr Knightley is simply hysterical. He says what everyone wants to say but can't.

  • 3 people were so stunned by the amazing acting in this and by Johnny Lee MIller's sexiness that they missed the like button...

  • @AliceCullensAwesome Totally, they were so mesmerized by the genius that is austen that they missed the like button completely, there can be no other explanation for it!

  • Haha! I love how Mrs. Weston's expression changed from happiness to a sort of penitent look as Emma spoke.

  • "Frank will be FREE! But of course....we're all very sad Mrs Churchill has died." LOL.

  • @KokoroNohii

hahahah yea i know an lol was in order for that scene xD

  • I love the flashbacks it shows at different times. Somehow it adds to the effect of this film.

  • lol I love it how clueless Emma is about everything but beyond her faults I've always liked her, specially in this brilliant BBC adaptation. The best Emma.

  • @panamakira and hence the movie adaptation, Clueless!

  • Everytime I watch this adaption which I completely do love.

I just cant get over her father, because I always see him as Dumblore, when he's talking about how the children cant eat the cake or how sensible mr knightly has 'wonderlust' it's hilarious xDDD

  • 'I am so very happy! - at this dreadful news.' hahahaaa!

  • Wait why doesn't he kiss her hand?!

  • @umitakahara I'm guessing that he's still a but annoyed at her because of what she said to Miss Bates and mostly i think because me thinks he loves her and she likes Mr Churchill (:

  • @umitakahara Not sur, so don't take this for given, but I would think that it's because he only sees Frank Churchill around and is irritated.

  • I love the way emma says jane fairfax at 8:27

  • the way he holds her hand is so intense and beautiful!!!!

  • Romola Garai and Jodhi May were both in Daniel Deronda. They work well along side each other.

  • I'm so happy they included the part where he almost kissed her hand. That scene almost makes me cry (and laugh at how dense Emma really is)

  • I'm so VERY happy at this... dreadful news.... LOL

I love this version of Emma!

  • john is hilarious!!! :DDD

  • @dinndin1 i love john!! he's amazing!

  • "There has been a solemn engagement between them since October" apparently translates as "this means something to eat and between them since yes that's correct" in the captions... Well, at least they go, um, THREE WORDS right! Omg, I love Emma so very much. I can't watch this enough times.

  • She called him "Knightley"!

  • It's beautiful to see , while the father is talking, how they look each other, Mr Knightley proud of her visit to Miss Bates and Emma happy for his approvation. It's just like described in the book. I adore this version of the BBC

  • the part where Emma is staring at Knightly's chair....no she doesn't miss him at all. ;)

  • @aussiegirlnz she already loves him, just she doesn't know it yet.....

  • I am so very happy!!!... At this terrible tragedy.

    Ah, love this movie...

  • I am so very happy!!!... At this terrible tragedy.

  • I think I hate Frank. Truly.

  • at the part when Frank remembers how he was taken away by his aunt i feel terribly sorry for him!!!!

  • "Frank Will be free!!

    *sigh* (of relief)

Oh, of course it is very sad that Mrs Churchill is dead"

  • I am so very happy at this....dreadful news.

  • "I don't know why everyone is infected by this wanderlust."

    Oh, Mr. Woodhouse ...

  • Mr. Knightley NEVER closes the doors.

  • Mr knightly is so cute. i love the actress for emma wonderfull job she did. and the actress for jane is also good. She has a wonderfull way of showing her pain

  • "mr.churchill is dead"

"why should we care?" LMAO, jon knightley can be so dense and forward at times

  • @Ayumura96 it's true John is forward. But i love his character and this adaption was so much better at letting us get to know his character. I love this version! I have watched it over and over.

  • "I am so very happy at this... dreadful news!" haha!

  • I think Emma's line when she finds out about Frank and Jane should have been: "Well, I... I think I might need a good... stiff drink."

  • Notice Emma's hair? She felt so bad about what she said that she wouldn't wait for her maid to do her hair for her. She set out right away to make ammends.

  • @musicalmeg19 Also, notice her clothes. it's all grey and black. Not the usual 'happy' colours she wears.

  • Watching again and loving this whole set of of posts @mondrudru you are an Angel... My cup does indeed run over with lots of lovely Emma posts... "I must away now and sleep, for who knows what the morrow will bring... maybe some good luck for a change..." *sighs and smiles wryly* :0)x

  • "... Jane ... Fairfax?"

    Hilarious reading of that line!

  • "I am so very happy!!! at this dreadful news..."

  • emma is a good person, she's complex and makes mistakes, haven't you said something stupid to an old friend?

  • has she come to ask for forgiveness or has she come to do a peeping tom's business on Jane's letters? wow, what a low-life Emma could be sometimes.

  • @ainnhana, im so glad Frank put emma and his mom in place. They had it coming. Now thats what i call a taste of one's own medicine.

  • Comment removed

  • @ainnhana

She came to reconcile, and to apologize in her own way. And that's saying something considering how proud she is.

  • WHY SOULD WE CARE?

    that killed me

  • I first saw Romola in Dirty Dancing HAvana nights, and immeadiately fell in love with her. Know I think I love her even more!

  • so if you're watching this for the one millionth time like i am, try turning on the captions, its hilariously wrong. lol

  • @embreydl thats so freakin hilarious!

  • @embreydl lol! Way to go google experimental technology! Hilarious.

  • @embreydl OMG! THIS IS HILARIOUS! This is like the bajillionth time i've watched it and I turned on the captions... "To Jane Fairfax?!" "to change tax"... AHAHA NOT EVEN CLOSE! I'm cracking up!

  • I loooove this version, it it jst so more emotional and powerful than the one with Gwyneth Paltrow ! Of course this is just my taste..but really, I prefer recent versions of Jane Austen's book..there are more true to me.

  • my god.. michael gambon is just too awesome in this :D hillarious!!

  • Who plays Miss Bates ? I know her from somewhere ;p

  • @MsGDLx Tamsin Greig, doesn't she do an amazing job? Especially that early scene where she looks around and truly sees the despair all around her, and the tears when Emma insults her.

  • @MsGDLx her name's Tamsin Greig, I beleive she's been in a few things

  • lol, this adaption delivers some cracking one liners! "Frank will be free! But we're all very sorry that Mrs Churchill is dead, of course."

  • Very sad...but extremely...interesting! LOL

It's a shame when people are glad when someone dies.... I hope I'm never that person..

  • "I am so VERY HAPPY at this... dreadful news..." LOL it's like Ding dong the witch is dead, which old witch, the Wicked Witch!

  • @milanne83 I couldn't help but laughing out loud when she said that!!

  • Isabella: " oh! mrs churchill is dead!"

    john: "Why should we care?"

    hahaha :D

  • 4:30 - "I don't know why everyone is infected by this wanderlust, ...even sensible Mr. Knightley."

Somehow, Mr.Woodhouse's notion and voice work poetically like an innocent background color, contrasting the blue mood of Mr. Knightley, who's walking into the distance.

    -----

Generally, Mr. Woodhouse's innocent words throughout this series function (to me) like a nostalgic but comfortable texture, for the events to be painted on.

This is the best interpretation/presentation of Mr. Woodhouse.

  • why does everyone look like they want to kill emma? o_o

  • haha I thought the same when I first watched this Emma (why does everyone want to kill emma...) lol

  • At first I thought those dirty looks she received were Emma's imagination. Then I realized Miss Bates is a great gossip and she probably told EVERYBODY what insult Emma had dealt her. No malice in Miss Bates telling, she was just being Miss Bates.

  • Its sweet how Knightley can't bring himself to kiss Emma's hand goodbye as if knowing that in doing so at this moment he won't be able make his feelings for her not obvious. Because of Frank Churchhill he wasn't ready to tell her yet.

  • He wants to kiss her hand to show his affections but is not sure of her feelings. Remember he thinks that she is in love with Frank Churchill. She has taken for granted all these years and when she thinks she is about to lose him she reallizes she is in love with him.(I would be too, he is such a gentleman and handsome, sexy)

  • I always wonder why she did not out right -apploligize for her behavior to her

  • I believe she does "say" it through her actions. You know actions speak louder than words. She's trying so hard to make up for her unfeeling remarks to Mrs. Bates.

  • I wondered about the absence of a simple apology, too. But remember Emma is also proud and silly. Her pride probably prevented her from apologizing because it would have meant she had been wrong.

  • @jonwiley In the book it is said that a straightforward apology would not be wanted by either Emma or Miss Bates. That would be considered deeply mortifying to both. By Emma going and seeing them, that is considered an apology through actions which was considered superior.

  • @marshsundeen Different times, different social niceties, I suppose. I still believe a lot of good can be done by a simple, sincere apology rather than sweeping it aside as if nothing had happened.

  • @jonwiley being raised by WASPs, you learn early on to say ANYTHING but the truth! Heavens, NEVER say what you really feel or think! What would become of the world, with honesty and true feelings being expressed all the time??? What would Austen have had to write about???

  • Emma is so sweet how she says 'Won't you come too?" all sad and sorry for her actions.

And the way Knightly almost kisses her hand then (in my mind) imagines himself kissing saying goodbye to Emma- like, goodbye forever, they way we were is over- without even saying a word! And Emma's look of absolute sadness and regret, and also confusion- like there are undercurrents in Knightley's behavior that she is aware of but doesn't understand

I think this is the most brilliant scene I have ever seen!

  • Comment removed

  • Emma is one of the most beautiful actresses ever!

  • I am so very happy at this...dreadful news.

  • I think John Knightley is second only to Mr. Palmer in S&S ;P

Also, this adaptation really made me see all the subtle things that Clueless had in it!

  • FRANK WILL BE FREE!!

...of course we are all very sad she is dead... LOL

  • @icesk8ergal1123 My goodness I kind of exploded with laughter when he said that

  • I watched Clueless yesterday and watching this made me think that JLM and Paul Rudd are very much alike. Great choices for Knightly...

  • this is getting so much better. I didn't care for the beginning very much...i find it easier to relate to the characters when they are more subdued.

  • The reconcilliation scene brought tears to my eyes... such pure emotion expressed by both actresses!

  • made me cry like a baby

  • :O omg theyre engaged?!?!

i kinda expected they WOULD be engaged, but not that they ARE engaged :O

  • wow the reconciliation scene was very well done, you could feel the regret and sadness. I think i like this scene better than the one in the 1996 gweneth paltrow version.

  • I think Romola is one of the most beautiful British actresses...

  • @soteriasphinx I absolutely agree...i find her skin is gorgeous

  • @soteriasphinx I absolutely agree :D she's incredibly beautiful.

  • I actually like Emma's hair a bit messy like that.

  • Don't you think the reconciliation scene between Emma and Miss Bates is the most beautiful and moving of all versions?

I simply LOVE this new Emma.

    Well done, BBC!!!

  • @ElfoBlanco Yes!! :)

  • This was an excellent version of Emma,JLM was my favourite Knightley so Mark Strong has to be second now.Did it do that bad in the ratings?Shame.Sure it will sell well on dvd.

  • oh, and how heart wrenching it was when Mr. Knightly left, almost kissing Emma's hand, but thinking better about it...

  • wow, I was impressed how they showed how strong Miss. Bates was, after improving after Miss. Woodhouse's rebuff...the characters are beautifully acted

  • woah! him and her? engaged?! woah!
