For me the highlight of the whole series were the clips that showed the friendship between these two men. Also the fact that Jeremy was friends with his two Watsons in real life seemed to shine through.

Indeed the friendship between Holmes and Watson is very important and true in this series! As you said it certainly thanks to the real friendship which existed between JB and his 2 Watson. And I think that Hardwicke and Burke were 2 wonderful Watson, sensitive and funny, which complemented each other. They have rehabilitated Watson as a sweet and brave man, when many other actors played him as a stupid guy.

The change in Jeremy's appearance was due to the cocktail of medication he was prescribed for his Bipolar and heart conditions.

I still think he looked gorgeous regardless...
