This ATC controller should take a decent course of English. Good lord, if this was a high prio mayday, the plane would've been crashed by the time he could produce the correct words.
Terrible ATC. Well done to that Russian pilot who pointed out ATCs bad behaviour. If somebody declares a mayday you do not harass them. He told ATC his problem already. He is now very busy trying to save his own life and his passengers. Not have a chat about birds. What an idiot. ATC centres with international traffic should speak better English.
I' m really concerned with the english they use, I'd be really mortified with this situation because you as a pilot would be uncertain as if the tower is aware of the whole situation... I'm not a big fan of ruling the whole aviation in english but that's the way it is and we all have to be qualified to do so!
what that means he told you 3 times it was a bird strike he said bird strike bird strike you need too confirm that, very lousy job from the controller
every 3rd sentence was 'Say again?' and every fifth was 'Whats your message?'. bricks will be shat by passengers, if they could hear this conversation live.
as someone below here said: choose russian airline companies when going to Russia, at least they could be able to communicate.
while sitting in the cockpit of B737, carring out checks or awaiting for crew to come. I hardly could understand what those chinese pilots were talking about and I was amaized our controllers did understand them. I wish I had a voice recorder to save some examples of chinese English.
Why does everyone repeat "28 problems", when the controller said: "two eighty problems" (not twenty eight).
The most funniest part for me was when the controller was trying to specify the problem :)
I hope the situation with ATC at Pulkovo has been improved since that time. Frankly speaking there are some foreign pilots flying to Russia, whose language can hardly be called English. I'm talking about chinese crews (Hainan airways), I used to listen to Approach and Taxi frequence, while
must be a pain in the ass to fly in this airspace. everything have to be repeated at least twice. and ATC asking irrelevant questions at critical times.
This poor flight deck crew, bird strike, need immediate return, trying their damnest to explain what is wrong, what they need, need radar vectors, and having to put up with inferior controllers due to language difficulties. The swiss....always professional.
OMG, conclusion - when flying to Russia, choose Russian airlines... hope the Russian pilots would speak better English so they can at least manage take-off related emegencies at a foreign airport... :-/
We must give our pilots and air traffic controllers around the world better language training. If a very complex message or instruction needed to be understood, I fear it wouldn't happen with this level of English.
What is most important is that the emergency situation was understood and the aircraft was able to land safely. What I find slightly troubling is the level of English that is able to be understood and spoken.
@yannpilot you are right, but then cut some slack to a poor russian ATC, he lives in a country where all movies are voiced-over, he never heard native english speakers, well unless BA plane comes over. So he is not so bad taking into account that he probably learnt language at school... and there is more senior one which helps him out - in europe we call it a team work, nothing wrong about it.
I had no idea about how bad the lack of proper communication skills in some parts of Russia really is. I hope this is just an exception and doesn't represent other major airports like Moscow and others with high amount of international traffic.
We need more unified regulations by aviation authorites world-wide and standardized entry criterias for such important positions such as an air traffic controler.
No excuse to the level of english language of russian ATC, but before nagging him just remember who crashed two planes into each other and killed so many children...eh? remember now?? riiight they were Swiss!!
@TheSergy1983 : that had nothing to do with level of english... The ICAO rules about TCAS arrays were altered after that crash...it shouldnt of happend but it could of happend to anyone...
@yannpilot what i meant is that its better to deal with people who have a bad level of english, but not so ignorant to their work and land safely then with people who dont care at all about others but with great communication skills!
@TheSergy1983 i totally agree with you that skill is important but its wrong to say that the swiss dont care about others because a midair collision happend in their airspace...what happend was horrible but you have to cut the man some slack if you fully understand what happend, it was his fault yes, but he never intented for it to happen!
@yannpilot also, during the time of the crash, repairs were taking place on equipment in which the controller used which subsequently slowed down all the computer systems, not an excuse in itself but certainly made his life harder during that time. I believe the controller was stabbed to death as a result of that mid air collision.
@CityPuncher18 Yes he got stabbed by the father of one of the victims...The man lost his whole family in that crash and went insane...i cant imagine how that feels...and the one person to blame (who was still alive) was the air traffic controler...very tragic :(
Yawn. People obviously don't know that this is standard ATC in most parts of the world. I know of Indian ATC with the most perfect comprehension of English yet they have impossibly thick accents that no foreigner can understand, especially on HF.
----continued---- I had a bird strike on the same aircraft (different location) We didn´t negotiate, but told ATC what we intend to do. Declaring emergency means switching from subordinate to controler!!!!
Blaming the russian ATC-Controllers is an easy thing to do.... Just follow the mainstream in this discussion! Being professional in aviation ALSO means not to expect too much from your principal supporter in this particular case! It sounded like the pilots had too high expectations BEFORE they encountered this dual bird-strike. If I know that dealing with ATC is difficult, maybe impossible I don´t ask for anything but switch the X-pndr to 7700 and TELL them what will happen next.
LMAO!!!! "We can try but what do you need to say to him?" answer: "well, we'd like to order some pizzas while the tractor is crossing the whole country from somebody's farm". And i thought brazilian ATC was bad.
Two non-native English speakers with different mother tongues trying to communicate in English is not always easy; especially when there is an emergency. I agree that the Russian controllers could have had better comprehension, but despite communication difficulties on the exact nature of the emergency, they responded quickly to the mayday and directed the plane quickly, clearly and safely to land and should be given credit for that.

@RICHTAYL That's right! Don't fly to Russia! It is dangerous here, it's cold here, nobody speaks English and bears with balalaykas walk along our streets! =)))
I lived in US for 5 years and understand English pretty well. I couldn't understand English of the pilot as well. He speaks as Indian and nobody can understand Inidians. So don't blame dispatcher. They both have pretty bad accents.
Nothing of the kind. The pilot speaks OK. Swiss pilots are mainly german-speaking and his accent is perfectly understandable. But the Russians are as always in deep shit up to their neck...... The last phrase is phenomenal: Pilot-"Can you contact my company?" - Dispatcher: "What do you want me to say?" Tell them that you are an idiot...
@PearlJam2k6 I know German accent and British accent. Pilot has some Indian accent and in the beginning he pronounces 'Bird strike' very fast. What do you want me to say?" = the question was if pilot wants to say some addition info.
Why did that Russian controller keep asking the pilot whether he had a bird strike? The controller should have established that once, not repeatedly adding radio pressure to the Swiss pilots.
@xrayzulu1987 : Russian controller speak English very bad, so he can`t understand what Swiss pilots trying tell to him. In some moments other Russian pilots say: "he catch a bird" or "he want a firebrigade to runway" in russian...
But... have you ever called to USA embassy and tried to talk to them in Ukrainian or Russian? I've called and I had to re-ask each sentence to repeat. So accent is always a problem for everyone no matter of nationality.
Saying of the dispatcher: I've been working for American company for 5 years, but I couldn't understand everything without subtitles from the video in such a noisy background and poor quality of sound.
well, checked on google map, pulkovo is just an mediocore airport, two runways. but still.... this aint the way to go if that airport is going to accept foreign planes. props to the pilots that helped out that dispatcher. without them he will be like the guy in that german advert: like eng boat calls german coastguard: eng: 'we are sinking we are sinking' ger: (broken eng) 'what are you thinking about'
Guys this is Russia. Russian ain't like to learn any language. Stupid russians.

That's a shame in such a dangerous situation.
But... have you ever called to USA embassy and tried to talk to them in Ukrainian or Russian?

Пилоту поощрение и внеочередной отпуск. Диспетчеру и пидарасу, который этого диспетчера взял на работу - 20 лет лагерей каждому.
В Ленинбург больше на самолете - ни ногой.
