  • Oh Barbra! Her voice majestically swoops up and down the scale in this classic! Intense, yet effortless!

  • And the original Laura version the record company made her take out the best lyric. "I was raised on the book of Jesus, 'til i read between the lines..."

  • WHAT.A.VOICE.......... STUNNING RANGE

  • this song is tops when it comes to giving me chills

  • Barbra in her Q & A about Stoney End, when she sings "My poor mother worked the mines", she jokes at what a stupid , and unlikely lyric it is. But truth be known Laura Nyro's mother DID work the mines, the Diamond mines in NYC That was always Laura. Take something dull and making it beautiful, or universal. Barbra, I still think you're great, just don't dish other rartists that helped you get hip back when you were so square it took Stoney End Top to get u on The Cover of the Rolling Stone.

  • what a great version, brilliant sound, many thanks

  • The whole world seems to have discovered this song recently. I love it. Thanks for this post. It is lively and bouncy and just exudes confidence.

  • This is great fun - lotsa timeless talent on this one - thanks-

  • That, is one POWERFUL song.

  • Barbra Streisand's version of Stoney End AND Laura Nyro's version of this song are both awesome!

  • WOW!!!! What a difference in energy!

  • Good Job Here!!! PERFECT Sound.

  • This version definitely has a richer sound with the inclusion of the additional instruments and studio tweaking, although they're both great!

  • I stil have my old Quadrophonic LP of this. ;-) YUM. Think I'll dig it out and play it loud for my rap-lovin' neighbors.

  • @IrishRedRose

I thought that I was the only one in the world who ever purchased quadraphonic records.

  • @RCSVirginia - I purchased it and didn't even know what quadraphonic was.

  • i love this song...this made me a streisand fan...

  • But the light flickered out and parted--love those sweet sad Laura Nyro lyrics!

  • my poor mother worked the racks on Orchard Street is more like it.

  • My favorite by Barbra as well...thanks to Laura it is one of the most melodically sophisticated songs that Barbra ever sang....too bad she doesn't like it as much as her fans.

  • great song written by laura nyro who never got enuf credit! she died too young!!!!

  • great song written by laura nyro who never got enuf credit!

  • OMG! I had this quad LP - it sounded FANTASTIC! Played it over and over and over - quadraphonic sound should have stayed!

  • The bassline is so excellent, I could listen to just the bass with the drums + percussion all day on a perpetual loop ! Babba Wawa, I so lvoe her ! and The Babettes too

  • @DancingSpiderman THATS HAL BLAINE ON DRUMS....RUMOR SAYS IT'S JOE OSBORN ON BASS....

  • @JOEP123ful SORRY, you're wrong... it's Earl Palmer on drums on Stoney End.

  • @DancingSpiderman thank you for clearing that up...i've seen this tune give earl palmer the studio credit. for over 19 years i've beens speaking with hal blaine, i have his total disc-ography......he has stoney end as one of his songs....i do truly believe it was earl palmer....looking the dis-ography over, i'm finding material that is'nt jiving... thank you dancing spiderman we have to give earl his credit due

  • By far my favorite Streisand song - I'm 38 and most of my generation doesn't respect this type of music. This was my mother's favorite singer and while she is not my favorite I do respect her talent and love this song!!

  • cowbell, needs cowbell!!

  • So enjoyable, havent heard this version before.

    She is a wonderful singer.

  • Compared to the UK stereo single mix I have on a British CBS 45, this is Quad version is more pronounced and more powerful.

  • And 1:18 is rather a nice shot too!

  • This is a cracking version, thanks so much!

  • The picture at 3:01 just resonates, somehow.

    Sorrow.

    Comforting embrace.

    Hope.

I could go way beyond 1000 words.

  • @roadwarr Sorry, I meant 1:30. I was all shaken up.

  • The 1st song I ever rocked out to in the 70's..YAY!!!! Sexy Barbra!! She's still looks like she's 35 yrs.old!! Barbra on the cover of Playboy!! Yeah Baby!!! How can a gal get a date w/Barbra?..lol She looks today like she did in the owl & the pussycat. She's hotter than all those younger girls in hollywood!! & she can sing too..lol Thanx for uploading this.I've been waiting for Stoney End! I'm gonna play it all day long now..YAY!!! Hot video-Hot Photos!!! Sexy-Sexy-Sexy!!! Yummy!!

  • Great job on the video!!! Big thumbs up!!

  • What a voice!!

  • Barbara Streisand poses the power of GOD in her divine voice

  • at 2:34 the guitar note is absent from the quad mix versus the stereo mix. I still hear the hum in the intro I was raised by the good book Jesus 0:20 hum til I read between the lines hum now (hum ends after) I don't believe I want to. All the A/C stations like KFAN, KQXT, and KMMX played the stereo version as late as 1989 in their airplay. You can tell the difference between the two.

  • This is by far my favorite Barbra song. When she sings "raging soul" I go nuts.

  • BABS YOU THE BEST!!

  • Several people do this for a hobby. I'm no computer whiz, but there are good , as I call artist's out there, and wish I could do this as well. Good work. AAAA+

  • Best Streisand song ever.

  • LIKE BUTTER!

  • WOW! It's a whole different record! Fabulous!

  • this brings back memories. i remember hearing this on the radio on the school bus when i was in grade school.

  • Loved "Rose Garden" in quad, but not this. Prefer the mono mix.

  • the one thing that makes Barbra Streisand crazy is when nobody gives her the credit for having written Yentl."

  • @pronunciationafk Not only no credit for having written Yentl, but also directing Prince of Tides...........

  • Don't forget that Laura Nyro wrote this song

  • what a great post she has such beauty.

  • I always loved this song. I was surprised when I read that Barbra didnt like the song personally. Hard to tell though....she's always amazing. The pics were great...thanks

  • Great to hear this. My only thought, is that on the choruses, if we could just get some MORE COWBELL! Thanks for posting.

  • @hibob418 - ELOHEL!!

  • Great video, the voice, the pics, the legend, it says it all ! MY favorite song of hers. What a voice !

  • Columbia Records (CBS) should re-release all of their quads on compact disc! If you ever get to hear Sly and the Family Stone's "Hot Fun in the Summertime" you will see why!! Oh and the pic at 1:12 is too. damn. awesome.

  • @ClassicTV4U

yur write about that pic at 1:12, damn....

  • well my last favorite--the stony end

    how apropos

    xo

  • so beautiful . . . . . . . .

  • @yorkchester321...Thanks I think I will do that!!!

  • I possibly listen to this daily, just because it's so fantastic.

And theres a picture at 1:31, and it might be my favorite picture, 'cause it's really cute ;]

  • Her best song ever...thanks to Laura Nyro....and her great voice.......

  • My mom, Patty, and Aunt Margie used to meet Babs at the bus stop in Brooklyn to go to school. Mom and Aunt Margie are gone now, but I would love someday to ask Babs if she remembers them.

  • @akrukowski1964

you should go to her website and put that, I am sure she would love to hear it.

  • Great version. Great photos showing her inner as well as outer beauty.

  • Wow. This is an entirely different take than the original - more than just the mix. It's a different vocal track and frankly not as tigh or polished as the final...a demo...?

  • @Shufflerisms It may be all of those things but its fantastic!! The final that should have been IMO. As an aspiring bassist the bassline on this track is on fire. Her power and sustain in her vocals brings me to tears.

  • Top of her game, she really borught it for this one! Powerful.

  • *LOL* I can't help myself! .. I must have played this over and over atleast 20 times in a row!! (WTF?!?!)

  • Wow, barbara pic at 1:12-1:20..Breath taking. and this is the best version of her cover of the song.

  • This song is wonderful! I love it much more then the Nyro version..Hence my username LOL

  • man i loved it wonderful pictures Thanks : )

  • @erinbc1 - Thanks!

  • @erinbc1 the one in the blue knit sweater and long straight blonde hair @1:12 gave me a heart attack. I'd kill to have that as a poster.

  • I have this in both regular and SQ Quad and this mix is mind blowing! Love hearing that sax at the end. I'll have to hear my Quad version again soon. Well done!

  • EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @tropicalpancake56 - Thank you!!

  • I love this version, thanks!

  • Let's not forget the songwriter, who was so much a part of 60's/70's music... The late, and greatly missed, Laura Nyro.

  • thank you dear ROB for sharing !

    i like this song !!

    great !!

    have a good day

    hugs

    SYL

  • Amazing vocal by Barbra. The quality of this quad recording is fantastic. Thank you for posting it !!!

  • Laura Nyro's -- who wrote it -- version is better

  • @drwu58 No, not better, just different...

  • @THEmotownboy Just different. Yep

  • :] This is like, my favorite song. I haven't heard it in ages!

  • True music to live by but to remember the pass when thing were simple

  • Overrated? What the heck, she has been gifted with the greatest vocal instrument of any woman. No one will ever equal the talent that is Barbra!

  • to each his own

  • I agree she is Underrated if you tell me. Lil Wayne, Now that critter is overrated

  • Karen Carpenter

  • Its a slightly different vocal, not the one that was released for the radio, its not the one that appeared on her Stoney End album.... BUT... it sounds so close, it doesnt make a difference and the sound QUALITY is amazing !!!

  • WOW, have not heard this song in years! not even on XM. I like it, and missed it! I also like your favs.

  • I still think the old black vinyl records sound better than today's technology, occasional scratches and all! Barbra's early albums up thru the 70's in particular always had an exceptionl clear sound to them. You could even hear her breaths or putting down the mic etc;. Put on some quality headphones and forget about it, you were there in the studio!

  • I agree wholeheartedly!

  • You hit the nail RIGHT on the head there brother !!

  • By leaps and bounds my favorite Barbra song! Thank you!

  • @philip0460 Yeh, and the way we were

  • The sound is, in a word, superb. Thanks so much for posting.

  • Yes, I agree with previous comments - I believe this to be a completely different recording for Quad - vocals, orchestration, arrangement (slightly) - great posting here!

  • I love the subtle differences AWESOME!

  • great sound !!! :)

  • This DOES sound GREAT<<<<< Love the horn section especially.....

  • wow, you really outdid yourself on this video! *****

Love the pics 1:30 especially of the Gould

family and this audio is unbelievable

  • I think the vocals are re-recorded lol.. it's awesome. Love it... It sounds a lot like the original recording but u can hear the subtle differences.

  • Thanks!

  • hi i wanted to know if you have a facebook or a myspace??? and i loved the video

  • Dang! Gotta wonder if Barbra ever thinks about why she was given the gift of the most incredible singing voice - in my lifetime anyway? THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING VOCAL PERFORMANCE I HAVE EVER HEARD - AND I BEEN AROUND A WHILE!

  • love it love it love it!!!

  • This isn't just the released recording with additional parts, is it? It sounds like a different version altogether, especially the vocal. She's "breathier" than the original. I think I also hear a bass mistake.

  • I don't think it's a different recording; her vocal sounds EXACTLY the same to me, through every nuance. It's just that the sound has AMAZING crystal-clarity.

  • Your right, edwardjames - it is the same exact vocal. Thank you for the kind comments.

  • Why would I not comment kindly? You've shared with us a magnificent performance, and may I say, for all of us, thank you!

  • After posting the above I used good headphones to compare some vocal lines side-by-side & I believe you're right. I don't believe even Barbra could duplicate a performance so close (but I wouldn't put money on it). It's the recording enhancements I was hearing.

  • Stunning! Thank you so much for posting!

  • This is exceptional! Thanks for the upload. 10+ stars.

  • I truly love the Quad Mixes, do you know where I can get them all? I just heard a piece of The Way We Were Quad and its pretty good!

    thanks for the videos!

  • Very nice photos. Some new to me. I LOVE this quad version. Thanks for sharing.

  • Well done indeed, keep 'em coming ;)

Where is the Quad album from, Japan as usual? Or only the single?

  • The Quad LP was the US pressing on Columbia in the early 1970s...

  • Thanks, Benny! This is a nice compliment coming from you. I really enjoy your videos a lot!
