@HardWarUK The reason there are no game play videos is because it looked totally craptacular. It was sprite-based isometric - rather like early Command & Conquer - it was also turn based, like the tabletop version of 40k - the game was not very difficult but I really enjoyed playing it at the time. Dawn of War really doesn't seem to capture the grinding feel of 40k - too much micro management and resource gathering. If only one could get DoW graphics with Final Liberation style play - sweet
@FireBladeBurn I own ALL the Warhammer games: Final Liberation, Shadow of the Horned rat, Rites of War, Space Hulk I and II, Chaos Gate, Dark Omen, Dawn of War and all the expansions. didn;t get Dawn of War II though and doubt they'll be another good Warhammer computer game! All my copies are in perfect condition, as I am a collector, not someone who treats gaming as a past time like today. Instead of a library room with books, I have a library room with 282 Big Box 1990's PC games!
It is a simplified version of SSI:s old classsic Steel panthers more then anything, uses the same engine, and I got the feeling that it was using mostly Steel Panthers rules and not Epic 40K rules, but I could be wrong here, havent played any actual epic, but I have played a fair bit of Steel Panthers.
@meanmanturbo I am sure it uses the 40K rules just by reading the manual, which has lots of stats. You see, I have every W40K computer game, even though I have never played the board games. I love games where the world(s) have lots of history to bring the game alive. It's why more games should be based on books, not films!
Oh, I know that the game used alot of stats. I did not say that it used the stats directly from Steel Panthers, I meant that I think the game translated Epic 40K stats into Steel Panther engine stats. But I could be wrong of course.
For really bad "acting" look at Final Liberation 3A - Tallarn Leman Russ. The difference between this and Troma is that these guys were trying to do the best they could, where Toma set out to be crap. Some of the cut scenes are toe-curling bad; but COMMISSAR Holt makes up for a lot :) Hopefully the new Spacemarine Movie will be made with the same straight-faced approach rather than some knowing, self referential tone - Yes the humans are genocidal Nazis; but they don't know it.
People how want to be able to play this fine game on XP machines there is a solution which worked for me! [Options] MusicVol=100 FX_Volume=127 MV_Volume=127 UseGrid=0 DoVideo=0 WatchAI=0 AutoSave=1 ...just open notepad and copy and paste the above, save the file as ""epic.ini"" (make sure it doesn't end up as epic.ini.txt) and place it in the game's main directory. And the game should work. Good Luck!
:):):) - Shame you have to turn off the video to get the game to run. Still, thanks for the advice. Its a laugh to play Final Lib again after 10 years of gathering dust on the shelf.
yeh i know, but the loss of the videos is a small price to pay for the privilege of playing FL once again! we'll just watch the videos here again on youtube!
you can do the same with Real Player! which is what I got and I now have pretty much all the cutscenes saved! I still remember the 'warnings' I get from Commissar whenever I lose an ork counter-attack!
I found my copy in a flea market somewhere (Doesn't run anymore though :( ) I know when Home of the Underdogs was still up they had it, but I guess you're gonna have to google some abandonware
Epic uses 6mm figures rather than 28mm figures so you are able to get larger frmations on to the table (like a super-sized game of Apocalypse). The rules were diferent, treating squads as a single unit rather than individual troops. You can still get Epic via Gameswrokshops Specialist Games section on their website. The background was more or less the same (allowing for GW's not infrequent retroactive continuity). The Final Liberation game was more "epic" in feel than say Chaos Gate's 40k feel.
epic is used to play larger units, for example titans! imagine 40k as the little footsoldiers and epic as the massive war machines. even the huge baneblades of 40k are scaled down to the size of a regular imperial guard model!
I was watching the Judge Dread movie the other day and thought how easy it would be to make it 40K. Even with some good editing and voice overs you could make it work
The game was an early isometric sprite based game. The graphics were about the same as early Command & Conquer. The game play was nothing exceptional. However, it was 40k and the cut scenes were cheesie and great. Holt is the best cut scene character ever :)
Yea wouldnt it be nice if they had built a time machine and imported actors that wouldnt be around for another decade. Really short sighted on GW's part,
can some1 tell me how many MB the game was (if any1 remembers of course) cause i found it for download ziped in 93,7 KB and i want to ensure that it isn't virus or something dangerous
It was one of the first games released on CD so obviusly it's a lot bigger than 93,7 KB which is standart for viruses BTW. My wersion even without the cool cutsenes had circa 120 MB.
10 Years old turn based wargame. Probably available on download from some file sharing site. However I think it runs in DOS Mode so you may have problems getting it to run on XP or Vista :(
Maybe some nice person would cobble together a Dawn of War Campaign recreating Final Liberation and integrating the cutscenes from the older game - ah, what joy that would be :)
I'm not sure about the cutscenes(as it played no intro, and none of the first 3 in-game cutscenes, might just be my one though), but i've tried just running Final Liberation on XP with SP2 and it's fine.
I refuse to trust Vista for anything yet though, so i don't have it to test with. So if you have XP Pro with SP2(As thats all i have) it should run without even needing Compatability mode.
Ah, it was ever thus among the novices of xeno-linguistics. You must remember that the structure of the Orkish vocal system differs in many respects from that of the human - the Orks treble-cleft pallet for instance that adds a subnasal "phnung" to the beginning of so many Orkish words and leads to the so called Orkish sound "glrk"; normally transcribed in standard as "ll" and achieved by a human only through suppressing a sneeze at the appropriate moment.
They are basically guys in Halloween costumes - not that Games Workshops designs work much better as CGI - I think they are best suited to static poses as miniatures and paintings, making them move seems to highlight their awkward (or should that be orkward) anatomy.
Anyhow - orks look weird - but I ain't brave enough to walk up to one and tell him ;)
This is a very old game and ran on DOS in Windows - it will most likely not run on XP and almost certainly not on Vista (the spawn of Khaos that it is; bloated and insane) - it was turn based and used rough, 2D graphics. Personnally I prefer it to the click frenzy of "RTS"; its a shame Dawn of War does not offer a turn-based mode for old wargamers like myself.
The music is quite restful - which was just as well as it continued though out the entire game; anything more violent would have quickly outlived its welcome.
What is suitable 40k Music? Wagner springs to mind; though most fan stuff on Utube seems to feature the like of Ramstein.
It depends really, Bolt Thrower are very heavy, and have written a lot of 40k oriented songs, they even had the RTB01 box cover as album art for one of their earlier albums.

I recently had it running on XP Pro - I think I might have used compatability mode; but I can't remember for sure.
Right click on the desktop icon.
Select the Compatabiltiy Tab.
Tick "Run this programme in compatability mode for".
Select Windows 95 from the drop-down menu.
I don't promise anything, however, that might work.
