ok for everyone that is nit picking the way he wears his uniform, there is no one right way to wear the uniform, every school has their own way of wearing the Keikogi and Hakama, some schools tie the Hakama different ways then others. While one way might be more traditional than another it does not mean that it is right and the other is wrong, it just means that its one of the little idiosyncracies of that school and no matter what...just tie it the way your sensei tells you to tie it
no matter what you wear the sword blade up. i study in Iaido and i have experiance. the quote you fight like you train means everything you wear the sword edge up when you train. so you wear it edge up when you fight in traditional samurai plate armor
@rctsos the claims and suggestions made by the haidong gumdo associations are not official at all. in fact its treated like recreational sport like jazz dancing other than a traditional martial art!! we all know that its only about 2 decades old since it was first created by a korean celebrity and i dont think that one person represents the whole remark of korea and its people. shame on u for making such comments! u ignorant fool!
@rctsos so when someone creates a different style of martial arts then all of a sudden it becomes fake? is karate fake cuz it came from the chinese origin of kenpo? how ignorant of u. yea u can say that koreans can't copy the quality of the katana but u know what? no one on earth can make it like japanese! its not just the koreans. i think by fake kendo u mean haidon gumdo right? u know what? its not even acknowleged by the korean government to be called a traditional korean ma!
I don't think that it video is sucks, I pretty like it :) I'm thinking about practicing kendo and now i'm looking everything witch is conected with this spotr, wearing hakama and kengo gi too ;) so i'm thankful :) really arigato :P
i'm not expert or soemone who study japanese history/culture.
i dont know why, but from what i know.
i think what you ment is the old day military style of wearing katana they have something special to be attached to their armour i guess. and they hold the katana handle which become parallel to the ground
for personal or maybe warrior without armour(with Gi and hakama maybe) they wear katana inside their belt. and the belt is parallel already. so your sword wont be parallel no matter wat
but! its good that its not parallel. cuz it save space. so you wont be hitting anything /anyone with your blade case while you are walking and or turning.
you might be sliced in half if you do hit someone in the old day hahahaha just joking
That's pretty accurate, despite not studying Japanese history. The sword was worn edge down while in armor (regardless of being a katana or tachi) because of how the chest plate bulged; it was really a necessity of comfort so you don't have a piece of curved wood smacking you in the stomach as you ride your horse. In addition, it kept you from your saya caught between your legs as you mounted and dismounted. Also, it was tied to the belt tightly so the sword could be drawn with one hand.
I don't think it confused too many people, actually. I was just contributing what I knew; and I don't really study Japanese culture or history myself, though I've been attempting to teach myself the language for about 5 years or so with little luck (the fact I live in a place predominately Spanish or English speaking doesn't help, either).
the sword shouldn't be in that direction... anyway as he wrote, he didn't wear an Obi and the Saya should pass under one of the imo: in this way the sword goes in the right direction
I will be getting my first kendogi hakame set within a few days, can't wait to try it on ^^ I know that the way you put your one on is not the "right" way, but it is a very good rough example to give you the right direction ^^
i always thought a hakama would be nice i would much like 1
though i dont practice any of the martial arts that originally use it im more jsut a basic kung fu kinda guy(self trained too so well im sure u can guess im no bruce lee but im getting better) it would be good for confusing the opponent trying to see ur foot work and plus i also think they look really cool
I dont mean to be an asshole... but that only work for Kendo or maybe Iado (and looks perfect for those martial arts). Aikido practioners do not follow that instructions, please.
Dont be racist. I'm Japanese and I see no reason to dislike or make the Koreans feel shame for wanting to be like the Japanese. I, personally, am not the biggest fan of the Koreans (I blame North Korea for that), however, Korea should not feel shame for liking the Samurai.
@SavageHunter64 of course there are koreans attracted to japan and its culture but also at the same time, feels ashamed for liking it cuz of the bitter past between the two countries. and yet, japanese don't understand koreans' hatred and disgust b/c japan never taught the students about the imperialist japan's crimes against korea during the forceful occupation era and ww2. also, claiming dokdo(japan calls it takeshima) is their own territory and etc. its the japanese who should feel "shame"
@kyootoughguy Yeah, I know. Only recently have I even learned of these things. Nanking, Imperial Japan, and other atrocities. it saddens me, but I have faith in the future of Japan. However, I don't condone decapitating people for the sake of an island in the middle of the Sea of Japan. I personally believe that the people of Japan should be taught, and that Japan should formally apologize to both Korea and China. However decapitating people in front of the Japanese Embassy doesnt help...
@SavageHunter64 omg... at last, a japanese person with an objective point of view! the perfect scenario would be that japan formally apologizes and admits everthing that they have done decades ago. though, its not that simple, right wing extremists still play a large role in japanese politics and that group is willing to do 'anything' for japan's profit and glory. the moderate party on the other hand, thinks they should apologize and admit the crimes for the sake of 'peaceful' relationships
@kyootoughguy Like some of these right wing Japanese guys were saying that the occupation of Korea was beneficial to Korea, because they were weak and would have been ruled by another nation which would have been much crueler than Japan. While part of me wants to believe thats true, I can't, it just doesn't make sense. I love Japan, and I would do anything to help her, but what these Right wing guys are doing is not helping. Its making people look at Japan in disgust, rather than in awe.
@SavageHunter64 well i guess thats what happens when a country refuses accept the new ways and fails to modernize, develop and adapt to the global standards of the time. they should've known japan wouldn't give up on expanding its terrotories to the continents. i mean.. they've already tried to take over korea back in late 1500s... korea fended off the invasion and thought they could do it again but no... japan was too advanced in technology by early 20th century...
@SavageHunter64 i'm not holding any grudges against japanese 'people' we all know that its not people's fault that japan became aggressive and i think they have paid enough price for raging such violence against the world. i'm dissappointed in japanese government not accepting any of their cruelity and war crimes on the innocent civillians of korea at the time. and still tries to conduct conflicts by claiming an island of korea as their own territory.
@SavageHunter64 i just wanted to say this man... u r a good person! thx for understanding the situations from a neutral point of view... i hope someday the whole world will work together to achieve peace amongst all races on earth!!
@SavageHunter64 among the asian nations but the right wing party is more influential in current japan's politics... well.. it always have been... but yea.. im glad to be talking to a person who is willing to make changes! i like japanese cultures especially martial arts. I practice kendo and probably will stick to it for the rest of my life. no shame in admitting that lol! (decapitating people? did that really happened? decapitate? as in literal definition? i doubt it...) anyways peace!
@kyootoughguy Sorry I misread the article. It was birds they killed, not people! They decapitated pheasants not peasants. But a mother and her child cut their fingers off and some people set themselves on fire. But the Japanese rule over Korea in the early 1900 is not something to take light of. But the problem with these right wing guys, is they exist everywhere, and they are the bad guys. They convince themselves that what they're is the right thing.
This video may not have the greatest production values, but it shows you what matters—with most other 'hakama tying' videos I found you can hardly see what's going on... kudos!

thank you very much, this is the kind of video people need to know how do learn somethings. Like, i didn't know about putting the second belt under the first one when tying it in the front. thank you very much and i liked the video

Dude! Thanks! Just got my kendo outfit through the mail today.....had a good laugh trying to figure out the hakama....thanks again for the excellent vid!
tie a square knot instead of a granny knot. Basically, you have to alternate which side you cross over the other. For instance, if you cross the left tie over the right, make the bites and then cross the right bite over the left and you will have a horizontal knot.
No, its useful. I just bought my first smurf costume - I mean kendo uniform. I was wondering what that weird tag at the back does... I have been practicing in t-shirt and sweatpants so far. For anyone who is still wondering about where to buy one, a lot of martial art shops stock them, ask, they may not have them on display as kendo is not perhaps nr 1 popular sport.
I'd recommend never ever doing this. The cheap budo clothing at your nearest McKarate supplier will be noticeable lower in quality and not much or at all lower in price. There are a several online stores based in the USA that specialize in kendo/iaido gear such as ebogu and emudo.
I need to wear my Hakama for my 1st dan freestyle Karate Grading. For someone that's a so called beginner, you did well with the instructions. Thanks for the help. Great vid, easy to follow.
really simple and instructive video...for example the details for back knots is really good. thanks and my best wishes for you...do you know how to make the "flower" knot?
This video is very helpful... especially for Kendo practisers. Thank you a lot! This video is 100x more helpful than all "hakama wearing" pictures on the internet.
Man, I really get angry at all the wise guys that post comments on "you screwed it, because you did this tiny tiny messed up thingie, blah, blah, blah." Until those guys post a darn video better than yours, they should shut their word holes. Besides, your video is waaay more clear and easy to follow than a whole bunch made by über-professionals. Oh, and by the way, no. Your video DOES NOT suck. Thanks for posting! It helped me a lot!
Higher level kendoka (kendo practicioners) may train with katana during practice, but still use Shinai during competitions. And Kendogi and Iaidogi are worn the same, so it's no surprise if they're used interchangably.
Nice video. You seem to have a different method of tying your himo (cords).
One thing that you neglected is adjusting your keikogi. There should be no creases on your back. you can adjust it after tying the front himo, or after you complete putting on the hakama.
Just somthing to keep in mind, as you have stated you are a kendo beginner.
Thank you so much! I've been looking for an easy to understand video of how to wear hakama for some time now. You even included a way to use the sageo to the obi.
Hey nice vid! very helpfull video! I have a Question how did you put your iaito in your hakama? Maybe a stupid question but im not sure how to do that:)
Um I have some things to say. I'm a 7-Dan at kendo and well you need some help with your uniform. First off your hakamas are a little too big for you the the way you tied it was not the traditional way but that parts up to you.
simply do not make a knot in the back, make an othe lap and knot on the front of hakama. it's easier if yuo wear an obi so that you can tie the hakama on the obi
simply do not make a knot in the back, make an othe lap and knot on the front of hakama. it's easier if yuo wear an obi so that you can tie the hakama on the obi
this video helped me tie my hakama, so i thank you. I also like how you turned so i could see exactly what you were tieing. good job. nice music too hehe
There is usually no outward sign of rank in traditional kendo. Some very skilled teachers may wear a white uniform to symbolize purity (so do women and children) but that is not very common. Certificates are issued to prove one's rank but typically skill in a match is the true determining factor.
Other sword arts such as iaido wear obi but it is used to hold the swords & to keep the uwagi (jacket) closed.
Thanks for making and share this video

A silly question: why is the katana (daito) so "diagonal" when you put it on the hakama? Shouldn't it be flatter (parallel to the floor)?
Maybe I'm wrong, but anyways, very helpful vid. I hope I'll get a hakama pretty soon, so I get to know how to put it on.

This video is very helpful... especially for Kendo practisers. Thank you a lot! This video is 100x more helpful than all "hakama wearing" pictures on the internet.

thank you!! haha i just listened to it! it's sooo slow. . . i think i like your remix version better lol

Hakama wears not like this with a katana, this is the "Aikido" version.
The Saya don't throw all obi and hakama lines.
Look for on internet you found specific website on this.

Thank you, I need this video for my exam XD (really U.U)
Cristina9694 3 years ago
yo.. u do kendo... why you got a katana?? i thought kendo guys used wooden swords :|
meh... i dont do it... just curious
eddythateddy 3 years ago
Higher level kendoka (kendo practicioners) may train with katana during practice, but still use Shinai during competitions. And Kendogi and Iaidogi are worn the same, so it's no surprise if they're used interchangably.
ChishioAme 3 years ago
Nice video. You seem to have a different method of tying your himo (cords).
One thing that you neglected is adjusting your keikogi. There should be no creases on your back. you can adjust it after tying the front himo, or after you complete putting on the hakama.
Just somthing to keep in mind, as you have stated you are a kendo beginner.
pan788 3 years ago
Thank you so much! I've been looking for an easy to understand video of how to wear hakama for some time now. You even included a way to use the sageo to the obi.

Hey nice vid! very helpfull video! I have a Question how did you put your iaito in your hakama? Maybe a stupid question but im not sure how to do that:)
hanzo1993 4 years ago
Um I have some things to say. I'm a 7-Dan at kendo and well you need some help with your uniform. First off your hakamas are a little too big for you the the way you tied it was not the traditional way but that parts up to you.
shippo7000 4 years ago
That video doesn't suck dude, it was great seeing how you put it on!

thx cool vid. nice katana like a takeda's red.

if you make a knot liketha in the back under the koshita, a backward fall would be harmful !!
tunequeris 4 years ago
makes sense. could you tell me how to do it better?
LenFinndra 4 years ago
simply do not make a knot in the back, make an othe lap and knot on the front of hakama. it's easier if yuo wear an obi so that you can tie the hakama on the obi

soo... if there is no obi... how do you guys distinguish ranks?
rurouniofeast 4 years ago
There is usually no outward sign of rank in traditional kendo. Some very skilled teachers may wear a white uniform to symbolize purity (so do women and children) but that is not very common. Certificates are issued to prove one's rank but typically skill in a match is the true determining factor.
Other sword arts such as iaido wear obi but it is used to hold the swords & to keep the uwagi (jacket) closed.
Thank you

hahaha i agree with you
i bought it from ebay... for a cheap price, i was really disapointed about the scratch on the blade and the poor quality of the saya.
and it's not really a iaito... more likely to be a display sword.
i wanna get another better one sooner later this summer.
