People in northern California get it, but I see people down here do it in every lane, some times even between the exit lane and lane to the left, where everybody is changing lanes. this guy is average about 35mph in mid-day LA traffic on the 10E. Not bad. It took him 9.5min to travel about 5.5mi (Just past National to about the Western/Normandie exit).
It would take me nearly twice that by car. I travel that route pretty often.
i have a 120cc bike, better suit for lane splitting bcoz of its small size. And I can maintain the speed around 80 kmh (50 mph) when splitting..love it

I ride, and it still pisses me off when people do it. Not because they can and I cant, but because it's dangerous and irresponsible. ESPECIALLY in moving traffic. Half the time splitters cause more trouble for everyone else trying to get somewhere.

Lane splitting is retarded and should be illegal like it is in most states. If you want the video closely you will see that almost every time the rider approaches a car from the rear, the cars driver taps the brakes to slow down when the driver sees the rider which only further slows the flow of traffic. Not to mention the potential wrecks that could occur from this.
Maybe so but California has some of the worst roads I have ever driven on. Traffic planning is horrible in LA. I travel all over the country and with the exception of Atlanta, LA has some of the worst traffic. I do see how lane splitting is a good alternative, but you certainly must be a good rider. It sucks that people try to box you in.

Bunch of grouches, that was wonderful to watch. He was going fast enough that the drivers in front of him didn't have time for a rash reaction. There were a couple of close calls that made me cringe, but otherwise that looked like a f*ck of a lot of fun.
He started from just after the Overland on-ramp on the Santa Monica freeway going eastbound. There's no HOV lane on this section of the 10 freeway. I agree woth etyer that splitting the 1-2 lanes is better. No trucks (they are required by law to stay in the righ two lanes) and drivers in the #1 lane can move over more easily (if they wish to -- I always give a little "thank you" wave if they do)
Most lane splitters do so inbetween the 1 & 2 lanes, not 3 & 4. There are less lane changing cars. Also, there is no car pool lane on I-10. Lastly, he passed me! I am in the green Mercedes at 0:20. Weird.
Actually it's not that it's legal in CA, it's that it's not illegal. CA has no special rules, it's just that there are no laws in the books that deal with lane splitting. However an officer can get you for unsafe speeds and/or reckless driving if you're splitting lanes in a stupid manner.
This guy is probably a newer rider since more experienced riders split the far left lane and not the slow lane. Check out the far left lanes. Fewer cars and bigger spaces. He either kept right out of stupidity or to deliberately be riding in the thick of the cars for the sake of video.
Now that you mention it, I can see the carpool lane just barely. Still, this guy would have been smarter for being in that lane completely or splitting between the fast lane and middle lane.

Yeah, MAYBE if only traveling a slightly bit faster than the STAND STILL TRAFFIC. This moron was going at speeds that he could seriously injure other motorists. being from the midwest I'd never seen this before. First time I was in traffic in san fran I about jumped out of my skin when someone whipped by between me. Sorry folks, I lived in London for two years, this is no big deal everyday there. Take the 211 or the 315 down near Twickenham for Rugby and it's insane. No reason for lines on the street there.
Looks like decent safe splitting with negative comments from those who don't know better. What they don't understand is that by keeping moving you are in control and can react to what happens in front of you, but by taking a place behind a car in commuter traffic, you have a very high chance of being rear ended and crushed between the car in front and behind you as rear ender accidents in traffic are the majority of commuter collisions.

Bunch of grouches, that was wonderful to watch. He was going fast enough that the drivers in front of him didn't have time for a rash reaction. There were a couple of close calls that made me cringe, but otherwise that looked like a f*ck of a lot of fun.
Simple traffic management.

He started from just after the Overland on-ramp on the Santa Monica freeway going eastbound. There's no HOV lane on this section of the 10 freeway. I agree woth etyer that splitting the 1-2 lanes is better. No trucks (they are required by law to stay in the righ two lanes) and drivers in the #1 lane can move over more easily (if they wish to -- I always give a little "thank you" wave if they do)

Most lane splitters do so inbetween the 1 & 2 lanes, not 3 & 4. There are less lane changing cars. Also, there is no car pool lane on I-10. Lastly, he passed me! I am in the green Mercedes at 0:20. Weird.

Actually it's not that it's legal in CA, it's that it's not illegal. CA has no special rules, it's just that there are no laws in the books that deal with lane splitting. However an officer can get you for unsafe speeds and/or reckless driving if you're splitting lanes in a stupid manner.

This guy is probably a newer rider since more experienced riders split the far left lane and not the slow lane. Check out the far left lanes. Fewer cars and bigger spaces. He either kept right out of stupidity or to deliberately be riding in the thick of the cars for the sake of video.

On that freeway, the far left lane is a carpool lane and there is a double yellow sepperating it from the rest of the freeway.

Now that you mention it, I can see the carpool lane just barely. Still, this guy would have been smarter for being in that lane completely or splitting between the fast lane and middle lane.

It is idiots like this guy that cause higher insurance rates, higher motorcycle fatalities, and just a generally BAD public view of motorcyclists. It would have been one thing to have passed a few cars to get to your exit a mile or so up ahead.. but to blatantly speed over 30-40 mph than the cars surrounding you as you barely kept from hitting them... thats just.. well... thats just... selfish. I swear to god if I had saw you coming, you'd be dead.

Its been shown in California that lane splitting is safer than staying in the traffic. The only time this motorcyclist was in real danger was when that black suv and the mustang tried to wedge him in.

Yeah, MAYBE if only traveling a slightly bit faster than the STAND STILL TRAFFIC. This moron was going at speeds that he could seriously injure other motorists. Yes, a human body becomes quite a missile when launched properly. Not to mention if someone has to open the door while stopped for WHATEVER REASON. We've all done it. I think we can all agree here that if had a cop seen him, he would have been cited for wreckless driving, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

being from the midwest I'd never seen this before. First time I was in traffic in san fran I about jumped out of my skin when someone whipped by between me. Then I was worried I'd not be payin attention and jump and whack someone. That was several years ago now I see how cool it is but yeah, reaction time ftw.

Great Example of the joys of lane splitting. Beware. Don't try it when fatigued because you need all your reactions at their best. And beware of oblivious CELL PHONE users. Seems like the Mustang driver was on the cell phone.

Sorry folks, I lived in London for two years, this is no big deal everyday there. Take the 211 or the 315 down near Twickenham for Rugby and it's insane. No reason for lines on the street there.

Looks like decent safe splitting with negative comments from those who don't know better. What they don't understand is that by keeping moving you are in control and can react to what happens in front of you, but by taking a place behind a car in commuter traffic, you have a very high chance of being rear ended and crushed between the car in front and behind you as rear ender accidents in traffic are the majority of commuter collisions.
