  • I am not sure but I think fails shell or track gauge is close...the marks on the crane could make a rail broken, so...next the derailment is near

  • all that is on the rail is flat spots on the rail its not bad rail because the railroad i work for has these all around on the mainline and its some pretty good rail.

  • where is this track in.

  • What is the cause of this damage?

Would have beenice to see it close up.

rh, learn how to use your MANUAL focus and get some close video.

Would also like to have seen wheels go over it.

    Thanks for your video.

  • it'll eventually be pulled out later in time then put into a yard somewhere for 10 mph track.

  • @smartassstevie Or they will just pass a railgrinder over it and leave it where it is. Nothing really wrong with it that a little TLC won't cure.

  • 1. I've seen and been OVER a lot worse rail than that. 2. would have been nice to have part of the actual clip of the train going over that area to "hear the noise" first hand.

  • Nigga, CSX Is better than your ass, and yes i'm black, and awesome so FUCK U Bitch, go fuck yourself

  • @SuperDuckman24 It really doesn't matter if you are black, white, red, brown or green. What matters here is that you write as if you are an illiterate child and no one is going to take you seriously.

  • Nothing wrong with that rail.

  • Wow. you should ask if the track is bad and not make stupid comments. That rail is fine. Check out Dakota Southern for bad track.

  • All they need to do is bring out the loram rail grinder out there and have that rail shine back.

  • @lespaulguy32 We have sperry rail teset car's that xray all the rail and this is no defect. You are correct. A rail grinder will have this ground& reshaped in one pass!

  • Rail burn - It is caused by wheel spin on the loco`s when starting and also by hard braking, while not dangerous as such it will lead to a broken rail eventually, the track walkers will have seen and reported it and it will be replaced in due course.

  • iv seen that before

  • This guy doesnt know what the fuck he is talking about, no defects here.

  • @troy12n I agree with you!

  • @troy12n just another idiot foamer who thinks they know more about the railroad than the professionals. I'm a railfan but nowhere near a foamer...i know some about trains since my uncle is an engineer...but I admit there is still so much I don't know about the trains yet and stuff i will never learn... I only report problems when i know they are actual issues and not this silly shit. Smoking brakes for example.

  • @cooldit1

Please correct me then asshole... I stand by my statement.

  • @troy12n I'm sorry, i wasn't trying to be an ass dude. I was just making a well thought out comment to you. You got the wrong message in your head there. I wasn't mad at you...and wasn't saying anything about you.

  • @cooldit1 I have over 30 years in railroading. Every day I realize there are things I don't know and things I did know are being obsoleted by changes in the industry. Working in an ever changing environment is what makes this job challenging!!!!

It's not for everyone, but I've had a blast these years making trains go from A to B and come back again.

Yeah man....admitting you don't know and have a lot to learn is a big step in the right direction.

  • flange wear to the inside of the outside rail. Looks normal

  • Just looks like normal wear-n-tear to me. Certainly not dangerous, just a little rough is all. Amazing how many people are quick to judge the professionals who actually know something about railroading. As for CSX, I see no reason to be critical of them. They're doing quite a good job from what I can tell.

  • That is exactly what it is. Normal wear and definitely not dangerous.

And yes, there are always a few railfans or those ignorant of the industry that are quick to judge.

And I agree on your comment about CSXT. Always some railfan who says that railroad "X" does a lousy job but railroad "Y" is great.

The railfan "BNSFMANIFEST" is a good example. He hates UP, but is unable to back up any assertion he has with facts.

    Sad.

  • @Boss302fan UP is one of the older railroads and atsf of course now Bnsf is pretty old. No matter what kind of train i enjoy going out to look at them and get a couple pictures. Doesn't matter what company, they all have their pros and cons. I have seen "BNSFMANIFEST's" comments...and other stuff. Dumb.

  • @cooldit1 you wisely said "they all have their pros and cons". I agree. I can walk on just about any property on any given day and find something wrong and something right.

Hope you safely enjoy your hobby. Take care.

  • hmmmm those rails look actually in good shape

  • Is that around a curve?

  • Yes.

  • Ah! Well theres your answer! It was courtesey of 'Flange Wear!' You go to the other rail, and its all gauged inward I bet. :)

  • Looks like it needs a rail grinder.

  • loram does a nice job of getting rid of shelling and coragation

  • Rail fan and railroad magazine has reported that Mexico is moving ahead with plans to transform a little farming village on its Pacific coast into a $4 billion dollar seaport where containers from Asia will be shipped directly into the heart of the US.

  • Railfan and Railroad mag reported that??? Wow!!!!! What a great business source!!!

So what if they are bringing in containers to a seaport in Mexico. The containers, one way or another, are going to come in to a port somewhere.

Whether it's Mexico or Vancouver or Long Beach where I work....containers come in and go to the heart of America. What dif does it make if it's a Mexican port?

  • It is quoted that this part of the NAFTA railroad situation has made little headway in the US political agenda. As stated in rail fan and railroad magazine only when American jobs are lost will this situation be given any attention. The Village of Punta Colonet in Mexico will be transformed into the seaport. One should worry about the devastating effects this could have on the US economy and our railroads and Long shore men jobs.

  • WTF are you talking about? Are you saying that in general a new seaport in Mexico will destroy jobs in the US where seaports in San Diego, LA, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver won't? Huh?

The US consumer is going to buy from the far east no matter what the port of call is. Actually the transportation costs from Mexico through the US will be higher than Long Beach. I don't follow your logic.

Personally, our longshoremen need a kick in the ass. Their wages are ridiculous.

  • dude in 2 years the NAU will come into effect essentially giving america total control over north america, don't need to worry about seperate economies

  • You guys are right skin heads hate the wrong people ie jews and blacks. Its the Mexicans who have ruined our economy, health care, medicade for those who need it. They come here ruin the uniuons, deal drugs gang bang force white kids to join, Every white yuppie business owner now employes mexicans and gets rid of his black and white employees. They are a disease period. Spics are pure scum. People blame us it was Bush who opened the taco express flood gates. Spics are everywhere now. SCUM

  • @csxsd70ace You aren't helping. I have a few Mexican friends. Their parents are here legally. You act as if ALL Mexicans destroyed you or something. You are a jerk, you know that? And don't cry to me about your comment being 10 months old.

  • Not Mexicans. Replacing us with monkeys.....CSX conductor

  • Yes and CP is buying NS and replacing their contract employees with frost backs.

  • America is over. Our time has come and gone.

  • Maybe for you!!!

  • Yes it has. Aussie, here I come. :-)

  • You are wrong on so many fronts. The his track is not in that bad of condition. CSXT is not in poor financial condition or about to file bankruptcy. Their stock value decline parallels that of most NA railroads. The Greenbrier hotel was some tiny side bus. they wanted out of to sell to Marriott. Amtrak is government owned so they won't buy anyone.

Suggest you post about things you understand. You know nothing about CSXT, track or railroads in general.

  • FILEN0TFOUND having a bad day?

  • Comment removed

  • I'm so proud of you. You saved everyone in PA.

Sad there is not an ounce of truth in your story.

There is simply nothing significantly wrong with this track and your idiotic anecdotes prove only you are a simpleton.

  • You basically know nothing about railroading or track in general.

This is nothing. No danger to anyone at all and eventually MOW crews will take care of the issue during normal maintenance. This may be rail grinding or during a rehab program where rail is swapped out.

  • That was basically my thinking This would have been picked up via a track inspection car and then a possession would booked in and if deemed serious enough a speed restriction would be placed on the section until the possession can take place.

  • @ Boss302fan: I was thinking the same thing: what is wrong with this piece of track was my first thought...

  • It is a very minor defect and will be taken care of eventually. Of course a lot depends on just 'where' this track is. If it is on a heavy tonnage or high speed mainline it will be repaired sooner. If it's on an industrial lead...it may never be repaired.

  • I am a Supt. on a joint BNSF/UP owned facility. Far from being full of shit.

And I don't find the need to result to name calling or profanity to make a point as you do.

  • ummm tresspasing I agree he was doing. he didnt do a thing and was there for like 20 secs a train probably only comes by there every other hor like at my house so no danger. really think a waste of time to argue about it.

  • OMG..... that is the worst rail I have ever seen and I've seen a rail before. You need to stop all train traffic IMMEDIATELY!!!! Run as fast as you can up the track waving your arms so that the next train doesn't cross over it. You will save thousands of lives and be hailed a hero. You might even get to eat lunch with Obama!! Nice find!!! Don't listen to these railroaders below they just like seeing carnage. I think they get off on it. You know like I do when I hear that special horn.

  • I agree. As Supt. if I found a rail in this shape I would immediately embargo the entire port.

  • ? What do you mean by "Dont listen to these railroaders below"??????????????????

  • Are you asking me that?

  • lil bondo an some touch up

  • What is wrong with the rail? It looks fine.

  • That's because it is fine. There's not a thing wrong or dangerous about it.

What you have with uneducated railfans is a common tendency to second guess professionals.

Fortunately most do not engage in such activities.

But the few who tresspass or comment negatively about an industry they little understand ruin it for all.

If you don't know, or are curious. Ask.

But don't just assume something is wrong without knowing the facts.

As a conductor, you know this track is ok.

  • If you say so...

  • Comment removed

  • This is known as checking, and is normal. The rail grinder will take care of it. If left alone for a few years, it can eventually become a problem.

CSX, like all class 1 railroads sets priorities. This condition is fairly low on the list.

    johncmr

  • Filenotfoud...you asked Charlie who the fuck we are?

We are the managers of rail property with the obligation to move our nation's freight and keep assholes like you away.

You can enjoy yourself all you want. Just do it while not trespassing on our property. In particular if you are a rude asshole that your posts indicate you are. You give all railfans a horrible name.

  • Doesn't look like bad rail, just grind that shit out and you'll have a better rail head profile.

  • Not an 'exageration' at all.

We pulled a bleeding 'hobo' from a boxcar just a couple of weeks ago. (Houston).

Hoped on in Baton Rougue and ran afoul of a couple of other 'riders' who thought he had money. No serious injuries. Just got the shit kicked out of him and we took him down to the ER.

    It certainly isn't for everyone.

  • There is not one single exhaggeration in what I wrote above.

    Not one.

And guess what, I could care less what you think.

You are also a primary reason why so many professional rail managers do not let you on the property at all.

  • I'm a railroad terminal superintendent responsible for rail property. That is 'who the fuck I know I am".

That job gives me the right.

I do not mind railfans coming around and enjoying themselves. I usually welcome them as long as they stay off the property or at a safe distance. And if one asks for schedules or train locations I always tell them and chat if I have the time. I instruct my crews to be friendly.

But it is vulgar assholes such as yourself who ruin it for everyone.

  • Not only are you ignorant in regard to railroading, but you are bigoted as well.

    Jesus.

  • These idiots who say they work for the railroad and give their Cautious Calvin advise really make me sick. They exagerate everything they say and they want to look all high and mighty. I wouldnt listen to one word from these assholes. I hope someone punches them in the face when they approach them and start their ignorant bs.

  • And you railfans who ruin it for most of you are a pain in the ass to those of us who work in this industry.

Your own post shows your ignorance and why we don't want you around.

You want to punch us in the face when all we want to do is move freight safely.

The ignorant second guessing such as point out minor track defects such as shown in this video are ample reasons we don't want you around.

  • Thats normal for CSX Track, they never keep their rails up, and I used to work for the S.O.B.'s

  • This is normal track.....WORLDWIDE. It is not evidence someone doesn't keep rails up.

Rail is exposed to elements and incredible wear. Things happen.

Fortunately for those of us who work in this industry, you are no longer in it.

  • I've personally witnessed a railfan hit while filming. There are at least two videos on YOUTUBE showing railfans being hit while filming.

Not all of you know how to conduct yourselves safely around this dangerous equipment.

CSXT trackworker is absolutely correct. A few of the railfans out there make a bad name for the rest of you, and we don't have time to try and tell the difference.

I caught a dad and his son hanging off a moving train one afternoon. Ridiculous.

  • Maybe not you personally.

But I have had railfans climb on cars, locomotives, bridges, and moving trains.

Had a photographer climb a grain elevator for that perfect shot.

Had one climb a dangerous embankment and fall to the bottom. Had to take him to ER.

One dude crowded the track outside of a Ford facility and was clipped by the autopart boxcars as they swung through the "S".

So I disagree. I "OFTEN" have to tell railfans how not to get hit. OFTEN!

  • exagerate alot? I do not think so.. I tell what I see and have experienced. As for my head being swolen, not a chance.. As for using a pick and ax, I have yet to use one. CSX hired me becuase of my prior back ground in railroad work..

  • This track is fine it just need the railgrinder to come by. The noise you problably heard was an out of true wheel. All rails make nosie you ought to hear them after they are ground. They sing and are quite loud until the train polish them out smooth again. My question is this. Why are you standing on the tracks? Are you a railroad worker? People like you are what give railfans a bad name. SAFETY FIRST.

  • I did always "wandered" what bad rail looks like........your an idiot.

  • My father worked on the railroad, there is nothing wrong with the rail, the one comment was right...wheels get flat spots which causes the bang you hear on the rail. You need a new hobby my friend.

  • i seen worse tracks than those. i mean way worse.

  • csx trackworker:you are a stuck up asshole.I volonteer at a railway museum in my area and that doesn't mean I'm an expert automatically. There is probably a lot you do not now, like how to maintain a steam locomotive,we know how,but do you?no!there goes your expert certificate right out the window.may i ask why all railroad people are always grumpy old men,and are so mean to the younger railfans?Me and this generation pledge to be good to the public and not be stuck up.something you could never do

  • Actually being a volunteer at a railway museum doesn't mean your an expert at all. Much less automatically.

Didn't see CSXtrackworker saying anything about steam locomotives. He was giving his opinion about tracks which he is an expert on.

Us 'grumpy old men' are mean to you 'railfans' because a small minority of you are amazingly obnoxious. Constantly second guessing those of us who do this for a living and trespassing where you shouldn't.

  • I don't go on railroad property except the museum when i'm working on things. Calling yourself an expert makes you seem unappealing and arrogant. We're obnoxious? Someone going oh shut up you obnoxious little railfans i'm an expert! thats obnoxious. You are arrogant and rude. No wonder the divorce rate for rail workers is so high.

  • Married 27 years. Thank you.

I did not say 'you' were obnoxious or trespassing.

I said a 'small minority' of you are. And you know that to be a fact don't you.

Calling myself an expert may be arrogant but it is the truth. I've been working in this industry since I was 18 and I know it inside and out.

I know from what he writes that CSXtrackworker is also an 'expert' on track and it's funny to see some of the railfans here second guessing him.

  • You may be but just don't go bragging. okay? I am 13 and volonteer for the museum and I have laid ties and changed break shoes. I don't know how many railfans can say that. I have some experience too but im only a kid.

  • Not bragging. Just stating my qualifications.

Good for you at 13. Railroading is a fantastic career. It's tough. Hard. Full of rewards. Operation managers are the most second guessed decision makers in the world...maybe second only to football coaches on Monday morning.

As a good railfan, strive to learn the industry and withhold criticism on those who do the actual work until you know ALL the facts.

Railroading in the future will need hard workers. Hope you join us.

  • I hope I join too. I do assistant conductor duties like take tickets make boarding announcements, give the signal to highball, and for 3 point protection. I also have had cab rides to get some experience. I do have a little railroading experience but I do learn a lot from the reitred rr workers that volonteer there. It also bugs me when people tell us to hurry up on the steam locomotive rebuild we're doing because it is a lot of hard work and they don't know how much effort there isinto it

  • I hope one day you can bring your enthusiasm a railroad career.

I applaud the efforts of anyone working with steam locomotives. They were marvelous machines. I've ridden and run several, but they still baffle me.

There are several great career paths for you. Look to colleges that teach logistics.

And strive NEVER to be like some of the railfans here trashing CSXtrackworder and those of us with experience. Learn to be a professional who loves his job. Not a fan who second guesses.

  • I have more experience at 13 than a lot of railfans doing volonteer work on the trains and it makes me mad how they second guess that were not doing anything on the locomotive when we're doing a full scale rebuild and it takes time to craft parts by hand. A rebuild of a 2-8-2 takes time! lol. I've ridden behind steam before as well and absoluteley love it. I've never driven since I'm too young, but I have blown a whistle. It was amazing :)

  • lol whatever. probably just stand in the way and get yelled at.

  • He was on there for 30 seconds whoopty doo. TRESPASSER, big deal, get a life people! to the guy below me. you called him a dumbass, but you spelled it wrong:P lol. Shows how much credability he has.

  • its not the rails that make the noise. it is the wheels one or more has a flat spot on it.

    bumbass

  • I know what a flat spot on a wheel sounds like, im not stupid. If you would have watched the video of the coal train b4 this video you would hear the noise the rail was making.

  • Csxtrackworker needs to come back to reality. I marked him as spam.

  • I do live in reality, something you do not. If you did, you would take into realization that what I do for living does make me an expert. You are not one... Keep on railfanning and living in the make believe life of what you think railroading is, and how it operates and makes the decisions it does... Mark me as what ever you want. I could care less.

  • I would love to see you tell someone who has worked for the railroad for over 30 years that you are an expert. Would you still say you are an expert to them?

  • Yes, yes I would tell them that. I have 10 years experience on the railroad from track department to train crew... I work with guys who range from 2 months on the railroad to 36 years on the railroad.... I have worked everyjob from trackman, to track foreman in basic force.. The guys who I work with, and who have worked under me in the past know that I am very competant and very educated in what I do!!!!! I am an expert... Anything else you wish to somment on?

  • Thankyou Boss for your reply back. I have 10 years, but I am not cocky and arrogant when it comes to being a younger man.. I have learned a lot from older hands like your self, and would not be where I am today from the knowledge gained from you guys.. My point I was making before was to stay off the tracks.. There is no reason to be on the tracks when railfanning. I know quite a few on the subdivision where I work at, and they are great fans. Unfort it is the few that ruin it for them!!

  • Hi is a professional giving his view over how non-employees should conduct themselves when on rr property.

Congrats on marking him as spam. It's always wise to ignore the advice of experts when you don't like what they are saying.

  • Look man chill out. I know alot about the railroad so dont tell me I dont. I wasnt about to get hit by a train either. This was like 1 minute after a NB had just passed and I know when there is a train coming! The only time I get on the track is if I hear something that doesnt look or sound normal.

  • Actually, you dont know about the railroad until you actually work for one, and have the training and know how! it is a common misconception from a railfan thinking they know all about the railroad. Saying you wont get hit by a train is the first step to getting hit by one. I have been to too many of train people accidents!! That is why I wont calm down. Stay off the tracks. Also, if the FRA cathces you out there fines start from $5,000.00 on up for tresspassing.

  • You are an asshole dude. No court would ever fine a railfan $5,ooo. People like you are the reason the terrorists have won the war. Leave railfans alone and take a valium.

  • I may be an asshole, but I do know how the railroad operates, and how the "FRA" operates as well.. I deal with the "FRA" all the time. Railroads and the FRA are serious about tresspassing on railroad property. It is all about safety, and the lawsuits people file if they are inured on property.. Railfans have no business being on top of the tracks.. As long as you film from a safe distance, being 30ft or more that is fine.. This isnt about taking rights away from people.

  • It is keeping people off someplace they do not belong. That is on top of the tracks.. It is not the court system that fines the people, it is the Federal Railroad Administration. I saw 2 people get fined in south philly, off of the 58th street crossing. I am a railfan my self, and when I film I stay off the tracks. I do not have any business being on another railroads tracks. As long as you film on top of the tracks, I will be there to remove you from the tracks, to the side of them.

  • You play it safe and go by the rules, then it is all right with me.. I have seen 4 railfans at different time get clobberd by trains becuase A. they were on the tracks where they should not of been. B. they think they know the railroad.. How hard is it to railfan from the side of the tracks.. I do it all the time, and by doing so I ensure my safety, and also I do not break the law by tresspassing. You do know it is illegal right?? Don't be a douche, railfan safely. That is all we ask. I fan safe

  • There is nothing wrong with that piece of rail.. It is just pitted. Pitting does not make the rail dangerous to run on.. Sperry rail service runs over every subdivision on csx, and if it detects a defect in the rail then it will be tagged and changed out. This is a common misconception to someone who does not work for the railroad and really doesnt understand it. Besides, what were you doing tresspassing on CSX property with out permission from the railroad????

  • Ouch!

  • no its fine, the rail is just pitted. give it about a week of long heavy trains and it will be just fine

  • OMFG hilarious classic CSX

  • rail smail, they won't run on it if it was going to cause any damege

  • yes they would, i live by a CSX terminal, and the rail sucks, they don't take care of anything, their cars, locomotives, rails, crossings,... I see better care taking from a turkey sandwhich.

  • i've seen rail like that once. on a BNSF main line, on a curve, over which freights (incl loaded coals)do 55mph, and Amtrak 70mph.

only the chipping was even forse than this

  • its not UIC class rail for shore.

  • A northbound coal train had just went by so nothing was coming and no i dont work for csx.

  • You can tell the ones who don't work for the railroad, cos they are the ones who don't know what makes the noises between the wheels and tracks.

  • the next one could be jast a few mins behind and that is not bad track

  • did you look both ways before you fouled that track to make your little video? are you employed by csx by the way?

  • It's not called bad rail, it's nothing a good grind won't fix. Most of the noise comes from the wheels when they develop flat spots.

  • Wow I can hear you blowng that whistle 2000mi away.

  • Yall.. here?

  • Conrail never EXISTED before 1976 ,,, wow,,,,,

  • Instead of bitching about it report it to them and guess what rail in canadian pacific have rails that do that too its not the rail its whos maintaining them!!!!!!

  • depending on the speeds..that rail is fine.

  • are you on drugs that a vertical split head in the rail and shelling i bet when the speery car goes over the next day csx will be replacing the rail!

  • haha that csx for u lol

that rail for csx doesnt look that bad

  • Yeah thats what some people have said over the years but this wasnt Conrail track and it doesnt have passenger trains on this track either. But yes you are correct about the track with Conrail and everything.

  • The reason why the track is normally poor is because CSX normally runs on track when Contrail did passenger service in the 1950's and 1960's, and all the other service on the line. Some of the tracks haven't been replaced since.

  • LOL. yes it is. its better than some other rail i have seen before.

  • The greatest stretch of rail ever! LOL

  • Thats the kind of rail that drives me crazy when we run over it. Some engines rattle like there's no tomorrow!

  • Better watch out! That UP Cop might be sneaking around out there!

  • lol UP buggin around on CSX turf.

  • That one thing that sucks about CSX. They don't maintain their tracks well and trains on CSX are more likely to derail. Norfolk Southern I have to say is the safest form of Transportation.

  • How is it that you're such an expert on CSX?
