I don't have a 3G. But the main differences between 3G and 3GS are: speed, magnetic compass, 3MP camera with auto focus and video, voice control, and 3G w/ HSDPA (7.2mbps vs 3.6 on the older 3G).

There is a huge speed difference and if you have the money then you should buy it but if you dont then you should be okay for a while with the 3G.

Deciding whether to upgrade, or if a particular upgrade is worth it, is completely subjective. For me, upgrading to the original 3G iPhone was not worth it, but with the 3GS there was enough in it (combined with the 3G) that it was well worth it to me. However, I know many with 3G phones that are not planning to upgrade. It's a "to each, his own" type of thing.

If you're on AT&T then you can upgrade now. AT&T revised their upgrade requirements a couple of days ago allowing those that would have been eligible in July, August or September to upgrade now at the fully subsidy price (199 or 299).
