Electric cars are not the only answer because hydrogen contains more power than gasoline but you can't compress hydrogen enough to go further than a gasoline powered car but you can compress it enough to equal the distance of an electric car with more power. The loss of energy converting H2O to H2 is not really a problem because you get more power for that energy than from a battery and H2 is lighter than petrol and batteries in weight. H2 has many advantages.

Excuse me PS I live in NYC and experienced the blackout and it was not a big deal at all personally. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to use candles and eat canned food among other things. You miss the point of my statement. Oil is traded in dollars. If you can't cash your dollars in for oil or goods they are worthless to Russians. Russia doesn't need to buy oil so what will they do with their dollars. If they find someone willing to launder Russia's oil dollars we cut them off too. I hope you now understand my point of view.

With a strong decline of USD many OPEC countries have voiced their desire to switch to EURO. My point is that based on conditions the trade terms are set, during WW2 nobody knew about stability of Ruble or USD, so they traded in gold and other commodities.

Oil is traded on the open market in US dollars. Countries can sign contracts between themselves trading oil for goods or services but that is not how it's done on the free market for the most part today. Sure OPEC can and has voiced concerns about the devaluing of the dollar but they get more dollars and we happily sell them goods and services for those dollars. If they switch over to another currency they will no longer be able to buy American goods or services.

Oh? Why don't you go right ahead then and discontinue all purchases of oil, especially to Europe, from Russia. Anyone would tell you how much the world would suffer if you'd isolate the second largest oil exporter in the world, even if Russia wouldn't be it (hypothetically speaking). There's no logic, as the entire global economy would crumble. Rus denominates their oil in Rubles, which does not support the US economy/dollar. Don't wanna pay with Rubles? Start digging for new oil. (Won't happen)

The US just announced it will begin tapping reserves of oil off shore and on. It is yet to be seen if Anwr will be tapped as well. Europe is currently looking at different ways to "diversify" its energy sources. GM is now beginning to diversify its product line with LNG powered cars,Hydrogen powered cars and, Battery gas hybrid cars that get 200 miles on battery alone. This will drastically curb Petrol and petroleum consumption in the US and Europe. So Russia can sell their cheap oil for Yuan.

Why would you say hydrogen is not economical? It is 3x's more economical compared when compared with gasoline and we can use wind,solar,geo-thermal,nuclear,hydo and coal to make it. The US leads the world in most all research. America has out sourced its trivial necessities. Those market forces will devalue the Russian economy and finances when the US and Europe diversify their energy consumptions and drive Russia straight to the poor house while we continue to do business with stronger dollars.

It will be a heavy price tag to build the infrastructure but it has to start someplace and at some time as it is the future now. GM sure doesn't think its impossible and they are betting big bucks on it. Check out the guy who modified Gov Schwarzenegger's "green" Hummer. He can't get time off from hooking up todays vehicles with tomorrows hydrogen. So it can become economical and can be extremely clean.
