  • i like you dude, cool lesson but i do agree bit too much talk

  • or they could be 5 lets

  • Comment removed

  • whatever grouping you're playing, accenting on 3,4,5 etc you should know where the one is. For example this kind of grouping (accenting each 5 sixteinth note) has an accent on one each five meters. If dont want to get fired explain that to your co-players and advice them to pay attention to your hi-hat...Groupings are such a smart idea :)

  • @billo008

    when counting each measure: 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a (repeat measure after measure)

    you accent - alternating bass drum THEN snare drum - BD e + a 2 SD + a 3 e BD a 4 e + a (back to ) 1 of the next measure... ETC

hes using 2 measure length to "execute" his (BASIC) idea:

    BD e + a 2 SD + a 3 e BD a 4 e + SD (bar line) 1 e + a BD e + a 2 SD + a 3 e BD a 4 e + "a" 1

Those last two notes "a" 1 he plays CRASH CRASH ("a" "1")

Then back to bass drum beat 1 and sd beat 2 etc

  • periphery have a song called icarus lives that does this same thing he is talking about near the end of the song its have a really cool feel to it

  • I really like this video, most drummers are caught up in having speed and how to shed (its not bad) but most drummers dont know that gettin marketing isnt just about speed or fills but mainly groove and understanding time. Thanks for the video, I needed a better explanation than the one a drummer i know gave me, you obviously know what your saying.

  • probably in eighth notes... i cant remember! my sister can play better than that

.... and shes got no hands

  • what is metric modulation??

  • thanks dude, i have become very familiar with groups of 5 16ths... thanks so much

  • facepalm

  • My vocalist can't even keep to regular beat.

  • I was right about to say metric modulation, then I heard those lovely words. Cool stuff mayne!

  • Painful

  • its called gridding, its already been invented..

  • haters need to grow some balls and post their own instructional vid before making negative comments

  • @lilmawl people need to learn their shit before making an instrucitional video.

  • in response to some comments...it's not 5lets, sexts, quints, etc. 16th notes in 4/4 with the accent moving 1 16th over. Good lick!

  • hey yo...

thats so clever, I actually use to do kinda same stuff playing 4x4 but keeping the (hihat and kick beats) and changing only snares beats...it sounds awesome playing funk for example!!!

and really (Peeps complaint all the time cuz of it)! hehehe

    take care dude!

  • Cool hat, BRO!

  • good shit I'm gonna try this!

  • Dude they are called quintuplets!

  • am i on lsd again

  • so much talking for so few music... not to say that it sounds bad.. just to say that live is to short for so much speaking in front of the drums..

  • @iwannaberock I know what you mean! This was my first drum video I did over 2 years ago. My new videos I feel are way better with less talking and more drumming. All we can do as musicians is grow and improve every single day so hopefully I am doing that. To be honest, I never thought this video would get more than 1000 views, otherwise I probably would have done a better job! Thanks for watching though. For real.

  • this is done in icarus lives by periphery and it sounds awsome

  • Why don't you just call them 5lets?

  • your fulcrom makes me cringe

  • @BlueDevilSnareDrum if so... why can't you spell the word "f-u-l-c-r-u-m"?

  • @DrumTchr his folcrum makes me cringe regardless of my pp spelling poopy

  • @BlueDevilSnareDrum What makes me cringe is when he comes out of it... his 2 and 4 back beat become 1 and 3.

  • Instead of doing this do the Virgil Donati thing:

Left foot and Left hand play double paradiddle.

Right foot and Right hand play single paradiddle against what your left side is playing.

3 and 2 feels at the same time. Now you'll be fired for sure.

  • : What happens if I play this lick?

    : Then you'll be fired...

    : Fine

: ...out of a cannon, into the sun.

  • Well if you're trying to throw your singer off/get fired, why not just open up your sixteenth notes a bit and make it a fivelet fill. Even more odd metered!

  • I use this same type of idea in some of my fills (throwing accents on every fifth note in a 16th note fill etc) but never thought to drop something like this. Cool idea

  • Hey Nic, nice video but I think you left out an important part

If you do this as a fill, you should start back at the 1, to avoid sounding kind of wrong.

So, if you have HH + BD on 1, then you have HH + SD on 2e, then HH + BD on 3and and finally you have the HH + SD on the 4a (if I got what you're saying)

You should really try to hit that 1 that comes right after the 4a! And start the normal rythm again. It sounds way cool if you do that, give it a try!

  • you lost the one. that's what got you fired.

  • There's only ONE lick that will get you fired... and it doesn't involve a drumset...

  • 2:10 he plays walk this way by aerosmith

  • it seems u missed that 1 @ the end where u repeated the pattern more than a bar. I followed u to make sure and the rhythm didn't add up. However, the concept is the most important part! More drummers need to experiment with that stuff if they don't want their drumming to get boring & monotonous. Did you make a video w/ a paradiddle version of this concept? If not, it would be great! I'd post one but I sold my drumset.

  • Smashing.

  • you missed it, this lick should be just a bit longer to end on the one!!!

  • 1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a I cant count that HIGH!!!!

  • More romney ads ugh..

  • we all know musicians don't get jobs to begin with

  • If your vocalist can't do something with that, get a new one.

  • coooooooool

  • Good idea! I like this!

  • Good idea! I like this!

  • his hi hat is crooked. haha and why is he so choked up on the stick? odd grip

  • @justDRUMin42 Try the camera is crooked. Look at this normally. Look at the hi hat stand. No hi hat stand can be angled like that as far as I know.... This tells me the camera is a little off. And who gives a shit? His grip is fine, he gets the job done.

  • sooooo. it's polyrhythmic drumming.

  • dude....I just shat bricks to this....

  • Who would fire Jamie Kennedy?

  • I like it!!!

  • @Chrls5 me too lmao

  • Comment removed

  • It was pretty good but i am not on fire

  • @ The HATERS: Maaaaan, fuck ALL yall!!! My man here was trying nto share some shit that he was familiar with with the rest of you dumb fucks! @ My man on drums: Right on brother, thank you for that!

  • Fuck yeah master! Some jedi tricks,uh?

Nice video, I'll be see few more.

  • Nice job Nic, I'm trying to visualize this in a tune familiar to me outside of Jazz and I cannot think of one. Maybe you can. I would love to see it applied in a song where I could see/hear it being used. It sounds pretty cool. Oh yea put the mike closer to you, your talking is about the same level as the background noise. You came through real well when you said thanks at the end. :-) Cheers and Happy New Year!

  • @badmoonryzn Thanks for the comments! Yeah check out this Vinnie Colaiuta video - - /watch?v=4hOm7rkvChQ - - at around 2:20 for something similar to this type of lick. He uses it as more of a solo thing which is what I use it for too. I'm pretty sure I've heard Thomas Haake from Meshuggah do something similar before as well. Cheers.

  • @badmoonryzn Gorillaz use these types of funk/ "jungle" beats!

  • cool video. i like to do the same with triplets sorda. instead of Rlr Lrl Rlr Lrl I will play Rlr lRl rlR lrl. basically 3 sets of 4 beats. Rlrl Rlrl Rlrl

in 4/4 time this will def. piss somebody off as it seems like the drummer has slowed down.

  • don't understand what everyones getting worked up about? the guy isn't doing it correctly, but at least he posted something on youtube!

@nic you'll be a good teacher someday keep it up

  • Comment removed

  • @soicanspeak ahh ok, i'll take some for sure! thanks for the explanation.

  • What will get you never hired is wearing that ridiculous looking flat brimmed hat to an audition.

  • @djdepaolo Ask your mom. She hired me for my rhythm.

  • @NicThornsberryDrums Stick to drumming. Because headwear and snappy comebacks are definitely not your forte. The puppet hat fits that situation perfectly though. Good luck.

  • @NicThornsberryDrums What rhythm?

  • @NicThornsberryDrums I'm joking, I realized that the lack of a tongue face or a "haha" might make it sound like I'm being a dick. Hahaha.

  • @NicThornsberryDrums I'm sorry, but I do agree with the flat brimmed hat comment. They are kinda douche bag-ish :p But, that's just a hat. nice drumming. You have skills

  • @NicThornsberryDrums hahahahahahahahahaha yes!!!! I want to do you...

  • @NicThornsberryDrums OH DAYUUMN!!!

  • @djdepaolo Whata fucking retarded thing to say. This is a drum video, not a fucking fashion show.

  • @knowbuddydrums, homeslice, get over it.

  • Comment removed

  • @djdepaolo hahahahahahahah! YES BEST CALL! FUCKING GAY HAT, I HATE COCKHEADS THAT WEAR THEM!

  • @djdepaolo Wow what are you 40? get off the internet.

  • your messing up going back into the normal groove, your coming in not on one......

  • this guy is an idiot

  • i listen to yes. no time signature can possibly confuse me

  • LOL This reminds me of ME when I was your age. I went through all the Gavin Harrison stuff 15 years ago (three and four dimensional rhythms) and now after all these years, use little pieces and patches of such nuttiness in my playing.

Just know this- if you're on a "working band" situation and start pulling that stuff out every 2 bars, it's gonna suck. Use it once a night, trust me. I mean, if you wish to stay in that working band!

  • This is a very good way to teach the learning player.

Thank you for puttin this up!

  • Why are your hands so far up on the sticks?

  • How will this get you fired?

  • @woweasyguides It will only get you fired if you do this with katy perry or your top 40 cover band.....try it with a prog/fusion band and you might get a raise!

  • Stuff like this is pretty common in Jazz

  • thats head busting how did you learn it never mind explain it A+ for ability

  • cant believe how many dislikes this video has, they are blatantly all from dumb retards who don't know anything about anything, but for some reason still think they know more about drumming/music than a talented drummer. this is some proper tech Frank Zappa shit... and thats the best kinda shit

  • it's good man- big! and your timing is great. from reading some comments I think it's just going over peoples heads.

  • Is it me or are your sticks fuckin massive?

  • @Ginjaardrummer He has tiny hands.

  • essjkid05 = trever barber fan

  • So, this fill might work on songs designed around the slowed down beat. But, for the other 99% of songs this has no merit.

  • @GahDub

its not a "slowed down beat" lol. Its a drumming idea like a drum fill, you play a drum beat most of the time when you play the drums, thats what drummers do MOST of the time (play a drum beat) - THEN - every 8 measures or so you do a drum fill

THIS IDEA / VIDEO he is showing an alternate way of varying from the repetitive drum beat - it is an idea that can be used in lieu of a drum fill

So INSTEAD of doing a typical drum fill - you COULD do this variation he has shown

  • @lrrlrllr Thanks for your explanation of how this might work. I admit it has piqued my interest. I will have to actually try this lick out to see how it would work....or as in the title of this piece....get myself "fired" from my band. ;)

  • im gonna use this fill soooooo much :)

  • this shit is fucking stupid...

  • To sum up my previous comment... You're going for implied metric modulation, cool.... But make surre when you are doing this... The original quarter note pulse isn't lost... When you come back in you are off time... Play these to a click and you will understand what I mean....

  • @zking1774

I think youre wrong. Play 16ths with your hands WHILE hes playing these two grooves - the entire time. He is correct in his playing... his playing IS metronomically correct

He isnt slowing down - you can also watch him keeping the 1/4 note pulse in his left leg while he "modulates" the tempo.

    Hes pretty much right on

  • I used to play with a drummer that did that kind of thing (but not as sophisticated) at inappropriate times. He shoulda been fired I suppose..

  • cool

  • Yeah that will get you fired.

  • Comment removed

  • Your very solid man check out my drum vids see what you think and give me some pointers!!

  • Cool idea, thanks

  • If your playing with a vocalist that can't count or feel a groove you might have trouble. And what the fuck! Fuckin rock drumming is goddamn basic it pisses me off! Metal finally caught on to the 'edgy & experimental' sound a while ago but rock in general just refuses to evolve! Frank Zappa released "Hot Rats" in '69! 1960-fuckin-9! We've had 40 fuckin years to learn and grow from that shit and launch rock in a great direction but instead we get fuckin shit like Blink 182, The Killers, Ufuckin2!

  • @gaelicwop 30 Seconds to Mars, Alkaline Trio, American Head Charge, Death By Stereo, Dream Theater, Giraffes? Giraffes!, Incubus, Machine Head, The Mars Volta, Mastodon, Pantera, Pennywise (But only live), Primus, QotSA, Shattersphere, Skindred, Sublime, Suicidal Tendencies, TOOL, Trivium, I mean c'mon man I'm running out of characters for this...

  • Accidentally posted my comment three times. Woops! Youtube had a glitch.

  • Metric modulation is super fun to play with. Gavin Harrison (of Porcupine Tree) is the drummer that I first heard it from. He did it in a song called "Prodigal," towards the very end of the song if anyone is interested. My example of modulation is this: say for example you're playing at 150 bpm, with quarter notes as every hit on a cymbal. If you change those quarters to dotted eighths for every hit, it makes it sound like you sped up. Super fun to play!Just a tip on the topic.BTW, cool video.

  • Can you send me the sheet music for this.

  • @NicThornsberryDrums JUST so you know this is called the 16th note grid. =]

  • How long have you been playing a full set ("trap set" for us old folks)? and are you still marching. the suggestion of lowering your throne will feel so foreign at first 2-3 days and then you will start to find more power, speed and new pasterns, grooves, and fills. Keep it up

  • great job man!!!..metric modulation it,s a cool thing!!

  • You hit the last one on beat 4, would sound sweeter if you kept in 4/4 and ended on one.

    Just my opinion though

  • don't listen to that douche - I've been playing drums for 28 years and I've always sat high - its all a matter of preference, there is no set formula - makes rimshots easier too.

  • @tigermilk808 28 years? I bet if you adjusted your set properly you'd be better than you are now regardless of how good you are. There is nothing wrong with the advice and someone offering wisdom. and yes I've been playing since 1969 I still have my touring set from '82, 8 ply maple shells, a beast. I also play a set of Hart Pro 6.2. By the way it took me almost a month to find the proper position for the Hart set and completely different than my Pearl set

  • @brickceo I sit about as high as my childhood hero Bernard Purdie - always have always will. It's PURELY a matter of preference...when the advice isn't sound yeah I take issue with it.

  • @tigermilk808 Dude (let's keep it PC) Person, the advise is very sound and it's much easier to make this correction now than after he's been playing for 5 frustrating years and sounding like Mick Fleetwood. Even after 28 years you would see more speed, control, better patterns, stick control, hand and foot speed. and yes I have been playing since 1968. I still have my monster 8 ply maple Pearl set from 1984 I also play a Hart Dynamic Pro 6.4 with setup and seating different on each

  • @brickceo

Way to go man!!! You're my kind of guy, but some people just don't want good advise.

I was sitting wrong for years and have improved all kinds of things ( not just seating height) thanks to Dave Weckl's very first video "back to basiscs"!!!

    Keep on groovin', grtz, RUDETHEDUDE

  • @tigermilk808

Oh yes, there is a formula for everything, but you don't have to believe me.

Just watch "back to basiscs" from Dave Weckl and you'll be convinced right away, just as much as I was years ago. It took me a big step forward for cleaner playing, faster, smoother and without any muscle pains, all this with a much better sound.

    Grtz,

    RUDETHEDUDE

  • tempo modulation

  • I'll just keep my clothes on, thanks.

  • 58 people are deaf (y)

  • play not talk.

  • I really dont see how anyone can saying ANYTHING negative about this video. Its cool!

He is doing a great job!

Telling him about his seat height???

OBVIOUSLY his seat height IS NOT affecting his playing. How many drummer do YOU know that can play 3 consecutive 16th notes in a row at this tempo (cleanly) with ONE bass drum? Not many! CLEARLY the height he sits at is no limiting factor, it works well for him. Sounds good to me!

Cool idea executed very well. Props!

  • @soicanspeak

He and you would be surprised how important seating height is, just watch the video "back to basics" from Dave Weckl and take your own conclusions!!!

    Grtz, RUDETHEDUDE

  • @rudethedude1959

I already have... "drawn my conclusion"

Seat height, technique, ETC - all that DOES NOT MATTER IF you can play your ideas WITHOUT discomfort or pain.

I said he looks relaxed to me and sounds good - AND OBVIUOSLY to be able to play 3 consecutive 16th notes on the bass drum like he did SHOWS / is proof that his seat height IS NOT an issue.

Again, technique IS ONLY A MEANS TO AN END

I bet youre one of those drummers who talks up a storm but cant REALLY play

  • @rudethedude1959

Ive owned that video for decades, watched it time and time again.

Technique is great if you need work on it. IT IS NOT meant to get hung up on. It is only a means to an end.

  • @soicanspeak

    Yes, but never to forget!!!

And most of the drummers out there forget about the basics and that is just what counts!!!

  • Comment removed

  • i'm laughing so HARD!!!!! 5! I wanna hear this stuff again, off the charts. Tis guy needs to show wekkle why he aint in dream theater

  • @jelleepit

I don't have to show nothing to anyone.Dave would be the best drummer dream theater ever had, but he just wants to be busy with other kinds of music, that's all!!!

And I'm a dream theater fan!!!

  • Wow I learnt loads. Why as a guitarist drummers are so full of shi

  • @jelleepit

Saying this means that you are the type of "musician" who is not open for any improvement at all!!!

  • thats a cool idea.

I almost didnt watch this video because SO MUCH TALKING BEFORE ANY PLAYING!

But it was worth the wait. Cool idea. Thanks for posting

  • @rudethedude1959 I've tried that but I'm only like 5'6..... when I sit low to where my thighs are parallel with the ground it's harder to play the toms, especially when I play two toms up. I'd rather sit higher than have my shoulders tense up from having to reach to hit my toms haha. Thanks for watching man!

  • @NicThornsberryDrums I feel you on that, i'm 5'8 and have roughly the same problem.

  • @rudethedude1959

f u dude, he sounds good to me - who gives a FK about seat height - technique IS ONLY A MEANS TO AN END

I bet your one of those dork ass drummers who cant REALLY play well, but talks up a storm

His playing on this video is sweet, and he deserves props for it... lets see YOUR video! Probably dont have any!

If someones technique WORKS for them, no need to change it. He looked relaxed to me, no tension or anything else that might cause physical injury. Cool video!

  • @soicanspeak

Hi there. Look, I didn't want to attack anyone here, just wanted to give a good advise which I had from weckl's video years ago. It improved my way of playing with lot of improvement on hi-hat and bassdrum, especially while fast playing. Eveything sounded better, cleaner end smoother and I'm also short, 1,65m, that is about 5'5 I think.

I don't see any connection with tom heights to this matter

    grtz, RUDETHEDUDE

  • @rudethedude1959

Also, at the end his bass drum technique is great. "e + a" 4 (snare)

those three bass drums notes on e + a right before beat 4 - impressive. Very smooth and natural sounding. GREAT JOB!

OBVIOUSLY his seat height IS NOT in the way of his playing... to be able to play a single pedal like that!

    PROPS!

  • that is AWESOME! A very simple way to get people to be like, "What the F--, OOHHH SHIT!"

  • cool rhythm, i originally saw marko marko djordjevic doing this in another video... i adapted that 5 groups of 4 idea and made it into a samba clave, something else thats cool to explore!!

  • metric modulation is the tits. I think it grooves really well! If you can pull it back in enough anyway.

  • clever

  • a good way to get used to quintuplets is by accenting the 1st, 3rd and 5th beats, the accent changing hands on each cycle[cos its an odd number]. this way you can count them easier. note: the hard bit is changing from the fifth beat back around to the first, but if you start slow you will get it in no time :D. then when you remove the accents, you can understand the groove abit better! hope this is helpful.

  • That was fuck'n good dude!

  • i learned alot from this vid, and im not a drummer. very awesome.
