Can't believe it's been 3 years (almost) since this happened. Glad to see you and your wife came through OK and your baby wasn't harmed. Did the truck driver get charged? Never heard what happened.
Lots of muscle strains I'm sure and I'm sure some litigious idiots looking for a payday sued for no reasons. Ya know what...lifes tough, wear a helmet.
I was in that first car...saw that conveyor arm smashing its way through windows toward me. I stood up and kind of surfed out the impact after hearing the conductor yell BRACE as he backed up from his driving position to the vestibule. There were NO major injury's, but there easily could have been, I was expecting carnage but luckily there was none, the train never flipped into the swamp or else it would have ben a different story.
I live right by in Medway, My dad used to work in Dedham and he got on at Norfolk before your train came. That has too be so close, I remember that when I saw it on the news. Glad you made it out okay.
The police, fire and rescue arrived quickly and they were friendly and helpful as well. I had to deal with the MBTA police to get my belongings back and they couldn't have been better. I imagine that the MBTA workers in the 4th car probably had no idea what had happened.
Now, dealing with MBTA corporate to get my lost train pass back was an entirely different experience. I don't even have the energy to go into it now. What a bunch of complete morons.
I posted this video and as mentioned I was in the first car and my wife was injured. I have to say that from my experience the MBTA personnel was fantastic.
The conductor has repeatedly been credited with preventing further injury by jumping from his conductor's position moments before impact, risking his own self to warn others of the impending collision. The other MBTA workers on the train were very comforting.
Suggestion: when riding the commuter rail, do not use the 1st car. If anything happened, do not expect MBTA crew to help you anything. The only thing they can do is to collect the fare, that's it. And beware that some of them might ask for the ticket more than once for a trip from Forge Park to South Station. That happened to me twice. I am not using Franklin line anymore but I am still using another line -- still MBTA, no difference.
Another thing was, round 2006-2007, one of the male MBTA crew on Franklin line always liked to come up to FEMALE passengers on the train. He was on that train as well. When the accident happened, he just stood there and did nothing.
"Is any body still on the train... except the 1st car...Is any body still on the train?" What the heck... All the people here are NOT on the train and how do we know if anybody still on the train or not. If you want to know, why don't you just get on the train and take a look? Gee...
Then several school buses arrived. No one told us what the plan was and we had to ask the driver. Then the buses took us to Franklin station or back to Forge Park.
We waited on the train for 3-5 minutes and nobody told us what happened and what to do. Then we jumped off the train and realized what happened. People started to call the office with their cell phones. We stood there for 15-20 min and on one told us what to do next.
Then a genius MBTA crew asked us (us = people standing on the ground) loudly:
Then we heard a MBTA crew (female, I guess) asked another one via PA system (still working): "Charlie, what should we do now?" People almost laughed because she sounded like she was just one of the customers needed help, not someone who supposed to HELP customers.
It happened on October ??, 2006 and I was on that train. Fortunately I was at the 4th car. No one at the 4th car was injured.
Let me tell you what happened that morning and give you some ideas about the MBTA crews:
When the train hit the trailer, the car inclined and stopped. The power went off partially and no one knew what happened. A nice passenger walked along the car and asked: "Anybody hurt?"
There might not have been a sign for teh truck driver about getting stuck on the tracks. Sometimes there are and other times there aren't. He probably wouldn't have tried to cross if there was a "low riding trailer will get stuck sign" preceeding the tracks.
Thanks for posting. I was on the lower level of the 1st car. The excavator crashed into a window in about the same row I was in but on the other side of the aisle. I was fine, just a bit shaken. Something I will never forget. As someone said to me later that day, not many live to tell about being in a train accident.
He probablly wasn't racing the train through the crossing. What probably happened was the trailer stands used to support is when the trailer is not connected to a cab, got stuck on the rails. It's a more common event than you would think.
The overwrought "Franklin, MA Commuter Rail Train Accident!" isn't a total loss. Pugnacious Adam Field's performance as a train passenger enlivens the moral corruption saga about a jaded reporter (Steve Cooper) and his affiliation with the blustery Scorpion Lounge Impressario. But Cooper is a squirrelly newspaper reporter, an aristocrat with a secret past that holds the key to Adam's future.

Supposedly there was a sign but only on one of the streets that leads to the crossing. The truck driver apparently came down an adjacent street.
