I went to Spain a few years back as part of a Eurotrip across the Mediterranean and Portugal (didn't get to visit the Canary Islands, sorry!) and the reaction to me being Mexican American was usually indifference or general curiosity. The only comment that can be viewed as "racist" was when a drunken man said "sorry we have no corn tortillas here like in your Mexico" but honestly, I've heard much more racist things from people in America.

They speak in an accent similar to ours that was born from ours, they are mostly descended from Canarios and they have many of the same phrases, words, foods, music and culture as us. You gotta remember too that often people hide their prejudices from individuals but as a group their biases come out in force. For example, a white person in the south USA might have gotten along well with individual blacks but institutionalized racism went on the same. It's the general attitude in society that counts.

@IslenoGutierrez I've been to canary islands on cruise people there look like my puerto rican neighbors in Queens. Many canary islands moved to peurto rico and they look basically the same. Canary islanders are a mixed race , mainly spanish and portuguese with some african slave blood as well as guanche blood which is basically north african.

They speak in an accent similar to ours that was born from ours, they are mostly descended from Canarios and they have many of the same phrases, words, foods, music and culture as us. There are some that feel that way, but most people are not racists like that. You can't put a whole country into a little box. There are racist in your country too, but just like Spain, they are not the majority. Also, there is Portuguese blood in the Canaries, but much more Spanish blood. Not many blacks.

@IslenoGutierrez well i would say the opposite. MOST feel the way i described but there is the occasional open minded non racist ones too but they are definitely in the minority. You gotta remember too that often people hide their prejudices from individuals but as a group their biases come out in force. For example, a white person in the south USA might have gotten along well with individual blacks but institutionalized racism went on the same. It's the general attitude in society that counts.

@IslenoGutierrez I've been to canary islands on cruise people there look like my puerto rican neighbors in Queens. Many canary islands moved to peurto rico and they look basically the same. Canary islanders are a mixed race , mainly spanish and portuguese with some african slave blood as well as guanche blood which is basically north african.

There is as much Portuguese history (and blood ) as Spanish , the portuguese were the first euros to discover the islands and there was portuguese settlement there for over 300 years and because of the sugar can industry there were many blacks brought in as slaves to work the fields. The rest of your heritage is guanche. The islenos are as mixed race as the puerto ricans.

For the most part, we are Spanish, Portuguese and guanche. There are even blood from French, Germans and English in the Canaries. We are no more mixed than the English. The problem is that in American they just show you ugliest people because it is all propaganda. Remember the English and Spanish had been fighting for land and supremacy for a long time in the new world despite that the Spanish were their almost 100 plus years ahead of the English who started their first colony in 1607. When the Spanish colonist in every country in the new world revolted they were abandoned. The U.S absorbed a lot of Hispanics in Texas, Arizona, California, New Mexico & Florida

@SloveintzWend Spaniards are technically "Latin" (so are the French, for example, since they also speak a Latin-derived language), but the word "Latino" is pretty much misused in the United States. The majority of "Latinos" (Latin Americans) are obviously not "Spanish" but Amerindians and Mestizos.
