Pantera paved the way for metal for a long time to come. The anger and power in their songs was brilliant. it's fine that you don't like them, as hard at it is to believe since you're a metalhead, but they were an amazing band. Even if they had come out as a band last month and started putting these songs out they'd STILL be huge. It's timeless.
@Iwishiwerethird I disagree. I understand that they were somewhat "revolutionary", but that doesn't mean they are necessarily a big reason for why many of the good bands today exist. They did influence a lot of new bands, but many of those bands are huge piles of shit: Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Disturbed, etc... Most of the modern "groove metal". And also, if they had released this album last year it would have been completely unremarkable. What is there to make it stand out? Nothing.

I do think that Dimebag is pretty damn good, but the band as a whole doesn't measure up to his playing. Gene Hoglan was/is a great drummer, and quite revolutionary, but Strapping Young Lad isn't very good. I guess I'm not saying that Pantera is especially bad, I just think they're like Metallica, in that their music is kind of monotonous.
@Iwishiwerethird For example, I've been drumming for three or four years now, and I could cover just about everything that Pantera has ever produced. That's not a very good sign. Doesn't mean they're bad musicians, just means the music they're writing isn't challenging/interesting.
@neckface413 True, Vinne Paul wasn't the most brilliant drummer haha, hell I can play some of his drum lines and i only dabble in drums, but I've been playing guitar for 5 or 6 years and i still struggle with some of Dime's guitar riffs/solos. I see what you're saying about the music writing, though. But most good bands have at only one or two breakout musician in them, it's rare to find a band where all positions are filled as such. Side note: NOBODY can be as boring as Metallica :P lol.

@Iwishiwerethird Lets see... This might be kind of hard, because a lot of the bands I now love, I couldn't stand when I first heard them. Nile is probably the best death metal band in the world, but (in my opinion) the hardest to get into. Check out the albums Those Whom the Gods Detest and Ithyphallic, or George's solo project. Obscura is one of the most talented bands I know, they play some really weird technical shit. Omnivium is one of my top five favorite albums. More in the next comment.
@Iwishiwerethird Exhumed is good, they go for a more old school approach. Haha most of their members are in their forties, I think. All Guts no Glory is a great album. Behemoth is a classic, both Evengelion and Demigod are fun. Like I said though, they'll probably sound like shit upon first listen, but if you give them a chance they may grow on you. And since I'm a drummer, I must point out that Nile, Obscura, and Behemoth have three of the best drummers in the genre :D

But then an hour later this dick is rollin with his friends and hears a remix or some new r/b song using samples from that exact same shit, and it got this little turd bobbin his head. whoever said metal is dying. Id like to point out that no music genre since the 1600's has died. It just gets recycled.Its the generations that created it that are dying out. The new ones arent as fucked up in the same fucked up dirty era. If pantera came out today, it would probably be pretty hard for them. Bands like slayer, megadeth, pantera, sepultura etc were perfectly matched for the era they were in. I am more than happy with music trends and how they make you appreciate shit like this

I remember seeing their show at a little now long gone venue called "Rockwave" in my city. The place fit maybe 300 people and it was shoulder shoulder with 100's out in the parking lot unable toget in because of fire code. Theplace had mirrors on opposite walls and they were shaking rippling at the loud live and awesome rock being played.
