The passages were referring to the Edomites (the descendants of Esau). In the context of both of these passages, God is simply saying that He chose the descendants of one brother over another. It has nothing to do with Him hating an individual. God hates sin but does not hate sinners. Anyone who tells you differently is "cherrypicking" verses out of context.

The choir at my church sang this at my younger brother's funeral back in 2001. He was in the choir and they had been practicing this song for months and he was wanting to know when they (the choir) were going to sing it. The director couldn't find the "right time" to sing it before he died. My family along w/ the music director agreed that that was a very appropriate time to sing it.
