It seems very complex and I can not really understand if it is still true that an Irish person can use the title if given it. What I read seems to suggest that this is not the case after the 50's. Anyway, to be honest I think if you earn it you should be able to use it and I get pretty upset when people have a go at my friend for using his title. He earned it and should be able to use it if he wants.

The situation is, if you are knighted and are an Irish Citizen(or a non british citizen) it is merely honourary and is not the full title. However if that person then becomes eligable for british citezenship they can then use the title. In Terry's case he is eligable for citezenship but does not want to take it so instead he is a subject. I do agree that if you earn such an honour you should be able to use it but as is the way with this country rules and protocols must be followed.

If he hadn't, he might not have said exactly what he meant. It would have been terrible for him to have come off air and thought "why didn't I put it like this....." Also, I bet it was there as a prop for him to concentrate on in case he got emotional and his eyes filled with tears.
