When I was a kid, I always preferred the more realistic NWA over the cartoonish, overly gimmicked WWF. The wrestlers in the NWA looked like regular guys but had better wrestling skills than the huge, comic book, costumed, steroid freaks of the WWF. I miss these days.
Tully was one of the few that could cut a clean, smooth promo. No yelling, no screaming, no showing off. A Tully promo was the same as listening to the weather man telling you it was going to rain on Thursday. Short, sweet, and to the point.
Can you beleive that at the time of this enterview Tully Blanchard was only 29 years old ! Thats why us guys could relate to them . They were young , stylin and profilin .
Does anyone have the match when Dusty had Tully written across the sides of his head before their match? It may have been from starrcade, id love to see that again
I think that was Starcade 1986 and was a First Blood Match for the NWA World Television Title. WWE has that in their video library along with a lot of other NWA Matches.
I'd have to agree with you there. What I liked about the NWA is that they had their top stars battle it out on TV. The old WWF would have superstars vs. jobbers.
Starsky5000You are absolutely right. I loved 6pm saturday night. would watch just to here what they had to say then go out on the night coin phrasin what I heard people thought i was a nut wondering where I came up with the phrases. Today they don't even have promo's. And to TIMG138 Thank You for the awesome flix, keep um coming.
The BEST thing about these interviews is how the Horsemen just sort of walk out whenever they finish putting their two cents in. No reporter interference, no stupid questions, just the Horsemen talking about the business at hand. Gotta love it.
oh how i remember that old interview segment set from when i was a lil kid...i LOVED the World's TV title and it always had some great champions--Dusty, Arn Anderson, Muta, Sting, Chris Benoit, Ricky Steamboat, etc.
Say what you want about the WWE but KNOW that that logo in the top right hand corner is a falsehood. It irks me that some people think that Vince had something to do with this particular wrestling format. Those who KNOW understand that Vince had NOTHING to do with that kind of wrestling, or as Vince calls it RASSLIN. I think he coined that phrase because to this day he is jealous in some way of that kind of quality.
The truth of the matter is really this though for as much hate that is thrown out about the wwe and vince mcmahon....had it not been for him there probably would have never been a wcw. falsehood well that certainly is debatable, and btw he didn't coin the phrase rasslin..have you ever heard an 70+ year old person from the south try to refer to wrestling...it pretty much comes out as rasslin...lol
Say what YOU want. He didn't make Jim Crockett Promotions, or anything before that. WCW was something else. The NWA was something else entirely. It's pro wrestling not Rasslin like Vince says or whoever coined the phrase. I admit though if it wasn't for Vince's idea in 84, we problably wouldn't be having this concersation. Pro Wrestling is bigger than the WWE.
your absolutely right pro wrestling is bigger then the wwe but lets put truth where it is due had it NOT been for mcmahon and his influence within the business none of those companies and wrestling as an entire industry would have never reached the heights it did or lasted nearly as long as they did and thats a fact my friend..
Got news for ya, pro wrestling was already beyond those heights in quality. You think Memphis or Mid South or Japan needed to defer to mcmahon's "sports entertainment in terms of the SPORT'S quality. These territories did their thing and made the fans believe. Sure Vince did his thing, but wrestling is a hell of a lot better and a lot more than what Vince puts out there.
With all due respect Jessman46205, if it hadnt been for Vince Selling to the Croketts the territory that became Crokett's promotion, there wouldnt have been a Crokett promotion and sure as hell there wouldnt have been a WCW either. However i agree with you that the NWA was something else and that Wrestling was already beyond those heights in quality in Memphis and Mid South and even in Japan. Like you said they needed to difer from Vince's sport entretainement thing.
Tully Blanchard was always oozing class. I couldnt stand him when I was a kid watching him on tv. You can catch his Tully Blanchard Enterprise Inc. interviews on the Four Hoursemen DVD set that came out via WWE.
can you watch wrestling on your mircowave??? NO. can you watch wrestling on your TV??? YES. what's the purpose of wrestling on TV??? byrates and money. nuff said.
well.. yeah. Off the top of my head, Steamboat in 84, Magnum TA at the end of 85, and Ronnie Gartvin in 86.
The real question is, how many feuds did Dusty book himself in at one time. At the same time as this Tully feud, there was Flair, the Russians, and he had ties to Valiant's feud with Paul Jone's Army.
I know Baby Doll wasn't the most beautiful woman ever in pro wrestling, but Hatchet Face is a little harsh...LOL
