it's actually iggy pop solo in 1977...anyway amazing video. i don't know why this works because most of it seems totally unrelated to the song, but it does! eg im trying to work out what what rimbaud and baudelaire are doing in it. but as i said, somehow it works. loved it. really inventive
i had a bar room argument with a guy over whether this song is about a chinese girl iggy knew or about china white, the particularly pure form of heroin iggy used throughout the 70's. i think im still right.
wow! just saw a cute young girl take off her bikini top live on her cam at TopSexyLadies . com , love it when these real girls show a little, the sign up there is free
I feel the line "She says Shhh" is about repression of speech and art in both the East and West. Stand up and tell the truth in a house full of lies, Jim, as his China Girl knows too well, and your end will be at hand.
Yes - it's a metaphor n China girl is not an individual but another world & way of life. Bowie was always pretty progressive with his political nuances n asides & Iggy really grasped the anarchistic fascism that was in the air at the time.. not meant 2 b read literally but more of a statement about Western arrogance over something they know nothing about.. i think the 'shhh' n how it is conveyed is the very essence of the song 2 (they're both thespians at the end of the day!) X
Or is it the sheer horror of the song's theme? Make no mistake, these writers peered unblinking into the abyss and lived to tell the tale. "Wake up mornings, there's no China girl." A clear gob in the face of the callow political and economic Western world and the insane price we pay for it.
What gives a song as brave and bleak as this the cold iron architecture of art?
Is it in the resignation of lines like "...I'll ruin everything you are." and the warbled, downward cadence of the delivery of that line, in the incredible context it establishes in half of the first line "I could escape this feeling..." in the repeated agony of the descending guitar figure in the outro, in its reference to the political and geographic hubris of the genetic superiority of blue eyes?

Cheers for the Iggy upload. The Prickly Bowie lot deny this is an Iggy Song. Which it most definitely is. The first two Stooges LP's, The Idiot and Lust For Life are proof of Jimmy's individuality and influence.
This version (the original) is so far superior to the emasculated crap version Bowie did 6 years later. Of note is that the rythym section for both "The Idiot" and "Lust For Life" is Hunt and Tony Sales (Soupy's kids) who later went on to play with Bowie's Tin Machine.
Iggy and Bowie Wrote it together, Bowie later did his version down the road, because Iggy was broke, and had been in and out of rehab, so he did it because he knew he could make a friend some money.
I read the Iggy biography, and supposedly it is a love song for a girl from China who spoke hardly any English. They met in Berlin (or something, don't take my word for the city) and they had a brief, passionate relationship before they realized they could never stay together. After getting drunk, Iggy her how much he loved her and he was so jittery that she put her finger to his mouth and she said "Shhh."
what great song..its inpossible to compare iggys/bowies version..they made two different songs out it with bowie making it his his ws more restrained and more polished.iggys is great as he adds his style to it and it turns out great..i love em both
Just to add something to the Iggy/David debate, if memory serves correctly, they wrote the song together. However, although I love Bowie, Iggy's version definitely rocks better and harder.
Incredible use of film and music. This is a talent which should be harnessed and captured with the view of making something even more incredible. Truly unique in every way. Beautiful stuff.

It's not about the singing. It's about the way the emotion is shown through a combination of the lyrics and music.
