This happens to me all the time. There's a light that I need to make a left on which is always very crowded. So I need to wait for the light to turn red to finally cross but there are always idiots who don't want to wait.
i think its funny. i see the driver inter the intersection on a yellow. and the traffic light has a *left turn only* green arrow not iluminated. left is yield in any traffic scenario no matter whats going on, if vehicles are present. left turn vehicles waite untill a safe turn can be negotiated.
This happened to me! I entered at green it turned red and people accelerated to beat the light. As soon as I saw it turned red and people slowed to stop I intiated my turn and then someone ran the red light and rearended my car. Then i get blamed for the fault! I have a witness that was behind me for the left turn and I am taking this to court. I know it was not my fault but I had no camera with me...
Unfortunately, you might as well get used to it!!! EVERYONE is guilty of a fault!!! btw...never wise to PRESSUME what the other driver would or would't say.
Wow, how can you resist honking at him in this case?! In some videos, you lay on the horn and get a bit aggressive with people who commit much lesser offenses, and in others where people could have killed you, nothing. I find that strange.
@agoradzwn My mood was probably different at the time. But from your recent rash of comments I get the idea that you think you know exactly how I should drive... When I should honk and when I should not, when I should block people out and when I should not. We all do things a little differently.
@Scruit When you post videos on YouTube, expect corrective criticism and don't be so defensive. I could tell by your initial reply that you were pissed off that I had dared to issue advice.
@agoradzwn I was commenting about the context of your feedback across several of my videos. You have a very specific opinion of when is a ppropriate to honk/slow/swerve/intentionally block out other drivers. IT was curious to see whene each of my video fell into your concept of how driving should be. "This honk was ok, this one was not, why didn't you honk here" etc. I'm not pissed off, I'm just a little amused.
@Scruit Consistency can be across several different standards, not just one. You may as well go ahead and block my account, because I'm not going to kiss your butt with everything I say. But having said that, please realize I'm not saying you're a bad driver or anything like that. I'm just giving you my input on what you publicly posted. On the whole, I agree with your driving principles. I just noticed some mild aggression in some videos and seeming apathy in others.
i have been driving for about 35 years. In drivers' ed class, the point was made that you are to pull up into the intersection (and keep your wheels straight) until such time that you can turn left. If the light turns red, the opposing traffic must of course stop which gives you chance to complete your turn and clear the intersection. If a driver sits back at the line, like some drivers do, and there is alot of traffic, they'll never get where they're going!
to be really correct...youre not allowed to sit in the center section of the intersection! so...the driver with the camera ran just as much of a red light. he should have been behind the line.
Read the description where it says "BEFORE COMMENTING"
Your state law may vary, however under Ohio law a car may enter on green to turn left, and if subsequently stranded by the red light it has right of way to clear the intersection.
I never heard of that. I thought most cameras were handheld which would be pretty dumb to use while driving (which is what I was originally referring to)
@thgl2814 I have over a hundred videos here, mostly dashcam stuff. The description mentions the dashcam. It amazes me how many people think I'm using a handheld camera.
Most people on Yotube don't read video descriptions if they're just browsing through videos quickly and most people also have never heard of a dishcam
A driver facing the way of traffic that has a red light, impeding traffic with a green light IS for all intents and purposes running a red light, causing a MAJOR traffic obstacle. This is why, quite obviously, you have what's called a "green arrow."
In all honesty, it scares me how arrogant you are being when you were not in the right here, at all. I've seen far too many horrible actions as a result of situations where your car and that Jeep both race to run the light.
@bg1379 It's not a case of arrogance. It's a case of *my* actions being specifically allowed under Ohio law, and *her* actions being specifically prohibited by ohio law.
@fuseavk.... if your in green and oncoming traffic is too heavy... you can actually pull into the center of the intersection and turn when the light turns yellow or even red... and oncoming traffic in the opposite direction stops... so you are allowed to be in the lane on a red light if you are turning and you couldnt turn when it was green... just like the description says... its the same in michigan
if you look closely you can see that you turn after the light turns red, the suv was already going and it was wet out.. would you rather them slam on the breaks and run into a car ?
You can turn (well, I'm not sure if it's legal, probably is) whenever the light turns red IF you are "STRANDED" by the red light .. aka you're past the white line in the way of the cars that will be turning in front of you (they would have to make wide turns to get around you).. from what I can tell (camera is aimed too high to tell) you are pretty far back... not past the line.
Some states say you must stay behind the white line even when turning left. Some states say you can stage fo r the left and clear out if stranded by red. Ohio is one of the latter states.
In Ohio if they don't want you to stage for the left they will have a seperate signal for the left turn lane(s).
Also, I like that you are doing this. I have actually tried (and probably will some day again) but I don't have the money or know-how to have this kind of setup. Also, if I were to do it I'd have it record to a mac mini or something..I'd also have to have it record all the time or manually turn it on every time.
@Scruit I agree with you. A good driver should know his/her vehicle; if it takes 150 feet to stop the SUV in good weather, then you should double that up for slippery conditions, and drive accordingly.
I got a red light ticket upheld (even though I did manage to eventually stop, I slid through about 4 feet), and the judge said exactly that to me... 'you should have been driving according to road conditions', and I couldn't disagree with him.
@kayyouman I agree. With SUVs their 60-0mph braking is like around 150 feet. The fact that it's wet and the vehicle is heavy makes the SUV stop longer. He did the right job of going through the red light. I had braked in my BMW from 60-0 in 120 feet in the rain easy once it turned yellow. The Dodge Ram behind me could not brake in time so went right of me, with his entire vehicle rolling, to avoid me. I got slightly out of the way. I almost got hit.
Are you sayingthe SUV did the right thing running the light? The light was yellow for 4.5 seconds - plenty of time for them to stop. If your vehicle had a long stopping distance then that doesn't give you the right to ignore traffic laws - you drive in a way that accoutn for it.
Actually, it was also your (the video posters) responsibility to stay behind the white 'Stop Bar' until it was clear to complete the turn. Getting stuck in the intersection is no excuse for getting involved in a collision. Had there been a crash, BOTH drivers would have been found equally at fault because BOTH drivers violated a law that caused the hazzard.
I don't know what the law for this state is but in Illinois (my state) the procedure actually tells you to get into the middle of the intersection and wait for a clearing the reason for this is when one opens up your thru it in the quickest way possible
ya your vid was a waste of time, so i thought someone should inform you. Posting a guy running the yellow is like posting someone not coming to a full stop at a stop sign, just a waste of time
wow great advice..... but unless you posted your vid as waste of time how would I know? I expected some sort of entertainment, by the looks of others posts so did they
You obviously didn't watch the video properly. The other car ran a red light, not yellow. It may be a waste of your time, but continuing to debate this with me is even more of a waste, no?
Consider the context for a moment - around here this is unusual.
I'm sure there are places worse than here in terms of driving. That does not mean that because China is worse that here that we should all drive like China.
I didn't imply that, it's more a case of you actually don't realise how civilised and well off you are compared to many other places. I agree the Guy or Gal was an ignorant prick though.
Petition for red light camera's, goverment gets money, public gets safety - win win.
The point of this activity is that there will frequently be opposing traffic that runs the red, so the laws/regulations are meaningless as far as safety.
The only course of action to take is to make sure that all vehicles are stopped or slowing down before you proceed. It sucks, but it's safe. Will you get caught out and be blocking cross traffic sometimes? Yes, but so what, that traffic is standing still and can wait. Let idiots honk, I'll never be hit by light runners, it's impossible.
i was in a very similar situation a couple weeks ago on route 4 in fairfield.....i seriously hate driving on route 4, something always happens. sometimes i wish i had a dashcam
Im not gonna argue, but that sounds more like a local ordinance rather than a state code. But then again. Ive been to ohio and dont know how I made it back alive.
It's a matter of interpretation of state law. ORC 4511.42(A) states that a car turning left shall yield to an oncoming car that is close enough to constitute an immediate hazard. It's up to the responding officer / insurance companies to decide if an oncoming car that is facing a red light constitutes an immediate hazard. Most agree with me.
@Scruit - i think both vehicles are wrong. they both did not want to wait for the light, they both were in the middle of the intersection during a red light. the car turning first of all has to sit behind the white line, while waiting aka yielding to the oncoming traffic which the turning vehicle was way across the white line.
@HateRDDsBusted Wrong. Under Ohio law a left-turner can stage in the intersection waiting for oncoming traffic to clear. The law may be different where you live, but aren't relevant to this video.
@HateRDDsBusted The law in my area is that only one left turning vehicle can be in the intersection at a time but often I find 2 or 3 (sometimes even 4) vehicles crammed into the intersection just so they can make sure they can get through on that light. By law you are legally allowed to be in the intersection on a red light while waiting for it to be safe to clear, but you are not allowed to enter the intersection after the red light. :P
"Had this been an accident (and without the dashcam) I would have been blamed because she would never admit to running the red. "
Technically no..you would be at fault..unless directed by a traffic arrow all left hand turns at a green light must yield to oncomming traffic...even though they rant the light you would still be at fault for inattentivness.
Your state law may vary, however under Ohio law a car that entered on green to turn left, and was subsequently stranded by the red light, has right of way to clear the intersection. No car may enter the intersection on a red unless turning right and having made a stop first. No car may enter on green or yellow unless the intersection is clear. A stranded left-turner has ROW even over cars with green. Local PD said they would ticket the red runner only, but I would have to prove it was red.
i think id have to say about 90% of every accident i have seen is in this situation. anytime now if im the oncoming car and that light turns yellow i make sure i stop
I hope you're not criticizing someone for running a red light when you did too. You can't "stage" your vehicle in the middle of an intersection and expect everyone else to yield to you, you wait until it's clear to proceed ahead of the stop line. What if someone was coming from the right at the posted speed limit and didn't get caught at the light? All they know is some asshole just pulled out in front of them. Maybe we should all stop at green lights to make sure you're not there...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
due im fuckin 13 and when the light is green is means to fuckin go u idiot u shouldnt be sitting behind the stop bar when the light is green u need to get out in the intersection and turn when the coast is clear not sit at the stop bar when the light is green and wait for it to turn yellow then get in the intersection wow ur a real educated driver and by the way u ran the red light too because you were in the intersection when it turned red u retard
1) I was already staged inside the intersection for the left turn. I was not at the stop line - about 30' past it.
2) Once staged on green, when my light turns red I have ROW over other traffic (even if they have a green) until I have cleared the intersection. The oncoming car crossed their stop line over a second after the light turned red.
3) If you stage on green and the light turns red while you are staged, it is NOT a red light violation.
its so awesome you know all this because people are dumb to know this! and that happens to me alot! but in bad weather I would expect people to run it! like my first of bad driving, a truck did the same but it was perfect weather and had no reason to run it!
Props to him and props to you, you both know how to get the fuck to your destination.

Maybe we should all stop at green lights to make sure you're not there...

Under Ohio law, you *can* stage for a left turn. The laws that cover where you live may be different, but are irrelevant to this video.

due im fuckin 13 and when the light is green is means to fuckin go u idiot u shouldnt be sitting behind the stop bar when the light is green u need to get out in the intersection and turn when the coast is clear not sit at the stop bar when the light is green and wait for it to turn yellow then get in the intersection wow ur a real educated driver and by the way u ran the red light too because you were in the intersection when it turned red u retard

Vicarious traffic education failed you.

its so awesome you know all this because people are dumb to know this! and that happens to me alot! but in bad weather I would expect people to run it! like my first of bad driving, a truck did the same but it was perfect weather and had no reason to run it!
