So you posted a link on elance disguised as a job aimed at animators and said:
"Here is a sample of a video I've always loved."
and it turns out to be this?
Welcome to the long line of dirtball marketeers posting phony jobs to trick the unemployed adding insult to injury. That line you're in leads to hell not awesome.
So the path to a more "democratic" distribution scheme is to make the festival:
1) online and free
2) first round is "viewer's choice" most popular
3) ultimately still judged by media conglomerates who do the actual distributing?
It's the last part (fourth part of the process in this video) that I don't understand. Who EXACTLY decides if the movie is distributed, studio executives? If that's the case, what makes this process different from the way it has always worked in the past?
You know, it's not gonna be easy. It's not always gonna be fun, but in time all of us will truly have the chance to do this thing we love so much without having a leesh to tug. It's wonderful to be a filmmaker right now with all you wonderful people because there's so much to look forward to.
This is the wrong first step to take, you're assuming that filmmakers know about the internet as an effective medium to showcase their work. Instead, you should proactively participate in film festivals (sundance, slamdance...) and be PROACTIVE and talk to the filmmakers about the possibility of releasing their movie online. Of course, most of them will try to major retail distribution first, but you are their last hope, and there is nothing for them to lose. This is how you should START.
wow, if only this was an option for just about anyone. No one will think a film is "awesome" unless it looks good, to an extent. It has to be somewhat visually pleasing. It can't be made with some cheap camera and people who can't act what so ever. So what about those people? What about the ones with such potential, but without better option?
The selection is by the audiences rather than a small select group in a festival, so there is more democracy in it. But what have you planned to keep those who just keep logging in to vote their own work daily from happening, I wonder.
well if its down to a top 10 then that cancels out my interest. you had me up until that. its just another film festival where the people who vote will most likely vote for some mainstream shit in a top 10. fuck it. its supposed to be "different" but ends up the same old movie festival idea.
yeah just like a normal film festival, in the end its only 10 movies featured, decided on by weather or not they "think its awesome". Sure a couple of film makers will win, but how is this going to help the film community as a whole?
How does this strategy solve anything. As you said, over 20,000 movies were made last year. You are offering to assist in global distribution of only 10 movies. I don't see this as having any significance to the 20,000 movies that are made.
yea. plus since it's the community voting on a video where the filmmaker is trying to explain why their movie is "awesome," the people most likely to win are the people who are the most charismatic or attractive or good at making video blogs.
But... The whole idea of the top ten list. It's pretty much just letting the main stream take over, and then adding ten more films that people should watch. I think it'd work better if everyone just made a trailer and a full movie and after they watch the trailer there's a link to the full one. Then they could have a most viewed feature to show off the best trailers on views and ratings. And, that most viewed thing would be, oh I dunno, more than 10? Like, say, YouTube's?
Thanks for all the compliments guys. I'm Jordan from the FHTA entry Common and I designed and animated this along with Jeff Hockett, the co-director of Able Raises Cain.
Nice idea but it still puts the choice in the hands of a relatively small number of people and means that "unique" films may not be appreciated enough to be in the top ten based on a 3 minute sampling of the entire feature.
What concerns me is the comment on their web site, "Spread the word. Start sending friends, family and fans to your page.." Seems like solving one flaw but creating several others.

Great concept. I'm in support of anything that helps shift control from corporate America back to the people.

I love the visuals of that vid. It's well done. And yes, that's a cool way to give a chance for film-makers to show what they can do.

The video they featured made this idea sound great, but I think if and when I make a movie, I'll just use youtube.
