Met him once at Laguna Beach High School in 1976. As runners in High School we were in awe of him so we ditched school and drove down to Laguna to see him. He was, indeed, a very sweet and kind & humble boy not to mention a tremendous athlete. He took time to ask us where we went to school and what our PR's were - even invited us to warm up with him. I was sorry when I heard he had passed away at so young an age. God bless. RIP Eric.
In 1979 or possibly 80 El Dorado mens team were CIF champs. That was the highest you could go back then as there was no state championships. They also had 3 runners run 4:19 in the mile in 79 & 80, one of which also ran 9:02 in the 2 mile.
He went to Laguna Beach High School, in Laguna Beach, CA. He graduated in 1976, if I remember correctly, and then went to college at the University of California, Irvine for a couple of years, but he was nagged by injuries.
I have the newspaper article regarding this particular race with all the results if anyone is interested. Just drop me a line. Eric Hulst was awesome!
Absolutely AWESOME & PRICELESS!!! Thank you!!! Eric Hulst True animal if there ever was one. They don't make runners like him anymore. HS runners barely want to do a 60 minute run anymore. In my hometown of Akron, Ohio, I ran a 15 mile loop in high school called "Kimball's Loop", named after RICH KIMBALL who moved there & later became a founding member of the SUMMIT AC running club......great history
@zabezabe You dont know how right you are my friend. I was a runner up to Eric 1976 California State Meet 2-mile and he set the standard by which all his contemporaries strived to be. Eric was a beautiful human being.
Great old 8mm footage. Hulst was incredible. Saw him race Rich Kimball in the 1975 State 2-mile. Does anyone have footage of Hulst outkicking the Russians to win the 10,000 in the 1975 Junior Olympics?

El Dorado back in it's prime. Good times. And it's a shame that Hulst never ran all that well after high school. He had so much potential.

The last seven as listed in the Orange County Register:
14-Branson, University(Irvine), 10:59; 15-Sorensen, Upland, 11:00; 16-Charvet, Lennox, 11:00; 17-Wenzlau, San Marino, 11:01; 18-Storma, Agoura, 11:01; 19-Marple, Laguna Beach, 11:02; 20-Trilevsky, Upland, 11:07
Any errors may be mine, or could belong to the OC Register! I'm looking at a 34 year old article on yellowing newspaper.
