Skate and destroy... I feel like the 80's were the epitome of raw, creative unadulterated skateboarding. Now it's just a limb belonging to the body of corporate America. Too much focus on technicality and not enough on style and originality.
2:23 in the video, I'm in the crowd in the black/white picture in NJ at 14 years old. I still remember it clearly. Rodney Mullen and Tony Hawk also appeared. Natas Kaupas kicks ass!
@XeromeXHolland not really. most of his fan base loved him before nintendo...and i was skateboarding before he had a video game and knew he was the shit. i mean, tony hawk games actually made people like other skaters. and too bring skaters form around the world into one game. geoff is amazing. jamie thomas is my favorite skater. after thps1 came out i went and bought a zero video and was in love with gap skating
@yesmrchalkley check out Richie Jackson or Patrick Melcher. Those dudes are pretty innovative. And Jason Adams, he totally does his own thing. They're out there! just gotta watch out for em.
@yesmrchalkley be that kid that starts something new! I grew up in the 80s, we didnt realize then what was happening, probably like you dont realize now.....skate and have fun and take it from there
@yesmrchalkley I was 15 years old in 1991 and we would skate a curb for hours, there basically wern't many ramps and we had a great time just skating a curb.
80´s...good times! Times of Christian Hosoi and Natas Kaupas, my 2 favourites American skaters in that time. Too, In that time, here in Brazil we had god skaters, like Rui Muleque, beto or die (my favourite brazilian shape- by lifestyle), fernandinho batman, Cupim, Mureta, Alexandre Ribeiro, Sérgio negrão, tron and others. Too, I remember that I had a shape of rob roskop (my favourite), trucks tracker (I dreamed of having a Gullwing) and santa cruz's wheels. (U.S. products were expensive)
It's natural that the Americans elect an American, and of course, that a Brazilian say "Bob!". I remember the Rodney Mullen, in the 80s, as the king of the freestyle mode and Tony Hawk in vertical. But, to elect the best of all, I think we have to see who was the best overall (freestyle, street, vert ramp and mega). Mullen is the king on the ground and I think in vert, is Bob. Perhaps, by the history of the skateboard, Tony Hawk is the best in general?...
80's... In that time, here in Brazil, we only watching on tv, Hosoi and Hawk disputing the hegemony of the global skateboarding, and dreaming to see, in a day, a Brazilian skater in this place. The time has passed and the dream became a reality ... Bob Burnquist, Sandro Dias, among many others at the top of the world skating! What a pride! (we can not forget about the older Brazilians skaters that are part of this, too)

The Kings...
soccer = Pelé, basketball = Michael Jordan, tenis = Federer, surfboarding = kelly Slater, skateboarding = Tony Hawk or Bob Burnquist? (For me, is Bob. And for you? Who is the king?)
Hello. I'm from São Paulo-SP, Brazil (the South America's skateboarding capital) and in the 80's I saw the fight between Cristian Hosoi and Tony Hawk for the world hegemony. In that time, sure, we only dreamed, but today, I'm very proud to know that Bob Burnquist is the 'Pelé' (the King) of the skateboarding, like the Brazilian skateboarding is on the top of the world. (unfortuneately it still not happened with the Brazilian surfboarding). PS- Sorry 4 my bad english.
At 6.04 it shows the 101 products does anyone remember the 101 wheels Fuzzy snow frogs 96mm 95a. Also I remember the deck in the left hand corner it was released summer 1991 and called Challenger and showed the shuttle exploding.
tommy guerrero and ray barbee were awesome back then but arent remembered the same which is a shame kinda like that chris fizzle dude back in the day so tech people dare not say his name which is why i cannot spell it
Natas was insane at Surfing as well, I saw him catch major air one time- totally impressive for SM waves. I often wonder what heights he would have reached if he loved surfing as much skating and had gone down that path to a greater extent.
Natas and the Gonz, 2 Gods. As well as Rodney, seeing as he invented virtually every trick known bar a few, its just that these 2 bought those tricks outta the freestyle arena and onto the streets... awesome vids thanks for posting, the guy underneath me is a muppet.
Natas was one of my favorite skater when I startedback in 1987-1988. I musta been in 7th or 8th grade or something and my friend had a fish tail and my favorite board was my natas no tail flat streetskating board hands down. remember powell peralta bonite boards? I had a tony hawk. My brother got a christian Hasoi.
Natas was a real street skater and did what I tried to do when I skated. Rodney Mullen is OG freestyle. Represent!!
