What's gruesome is the impotent tin god idol of Arminianism who wants to save everyone but can't figure out how to do it. He has given them an autonomous free will that over rides His own will. Like giving a baby a razor blade, this cosmic dufus sits backs and frowns and shakes his empty head as they misuse the free will. He COULD stop them but won't violate their will. He loves them but created hell. Go figure.

Why is the prospect of universal conversion or at least a very large conversion to Christianity, in some sense, ignored? If God will have all men be saved, He is certainly capable of fulfilling His will. People are eternally damned in one sense in saved in another sense because they are new people in Christ.

@Drregaleagle God can certainly save any and all He wants. It is absolutely no problem for him to do so. However, the Bible speaks of both sheep and goats, wheat and tares, elect and reprobates. Will few be saved? If that is God's will. Yet many have not stopped to consider the millions of babies killed by abortion. Most Christians would think they are going to heaven. The number grows as we contemplate this sort of thing.

However only God knows who His elect are. Our job is to preach to all.

@ Not half so disappointing as the Arminian fiction which teaches Christ only died to make it POSSIBLE for the whole wide world (including, evidently, those already burning in hell) but did NOT guarantee the salvation of anyone.

@Graserassen My interpretation of the verse is rather obvious if you bothered to pay any attention. The whole world is used in opposition to the Jewish belief that YHWH and His Messiah were for them alone. Even Peter as amazed that God had decided to save the Gentiles as well. God bless.

Let us examine your idea: If the "whole world" meant the whole human race, then the phrase "not for ours only" and the word "also" are absolutely meaningless.

It would be a redundant tautology or saying:

"He is the propitiation for our sins and also for everybody." Better to have said simply, "He is the propitiation for the whole world" instead.

Yet John is pointing out Gentiles will be saved to as in John 10:16 and 17:20

How many times and in how many ways do Calvinists have to reiterate that due to the fact that we do NOT know personally who the elect are or are not WE preach the gospel to every creature? Find me ONE single solitary scripture forbidding ANYONE from coming to Christ or a Calvinist who so forbids!

Hi Rich,

This is what I look to when I preach God's word to the unsaved, knowing that the elect will hear it.

"The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed." (Romans 8:19)

I can tell you stories of my journey to salvation and looking back now, I am always amazed how I heard these words, but I hid that fact. Others do it too, so I know God keeps His promise in Isaiah 55 that His word will not return to him void.

Christ propitiated the wrath of God for all men without distinction. The Lord has saved some from every class: rich, poor, tall, short, men, women, ugly, pretty, young, old, and so on.

Christ did NOT propitiate the wrath of God for all men without exception.
