would it be a good idea if i have various certificates and i make a photocopy of them and attach them to my applications. would it make me a better candidate?
Know the vid is old but still want to comment. I went to put in an application on today and utilized your tips. I concentrated on my attire, dressed as if I could work there already (retail job), polite and smiled when I went in, and inquired about the process after filling out the app. I am a few years older than, but we can learn from anyone. Thanks for the tips!
Belated Congrats on your job! I agree with almost all of your wonderful tips except for the name thing. I have an African/African American name that I absolutely love & would never abbreviate for a job. I just graduated with my masters degree/ went back into the workforce as a R.N. (home health) & there aren't many black nurses in my area but the health care field is almost always in need for workers/offer great jobs. I hope you go on to become a R.N. b/c you would love it and the pay is great!
I am probably 20 years older than you..and I was not nearly so put together and well informed at your age...that happened when i turned about 30..keep up all you do ......
Congrats on the new job. Good tips also alot of ppl don't realize all those things you stated. I have a great mom like you and she taught me about those things you touched on. I have an interview tomorrow and am praying that I get it. But I know if its for me then I have nothing to worry about and if not my time will come.
can someone please give me information on how i can become a cna???!! most of the trainning are about a month long and by then i will have to go back to school in the fall.... what is the fastest way to do it please send me a message please!!!! thank you
I really just depends on the state that you live in and their rules/regulations for obtaining your certification as CNA. I'm a R.N. in NC and we require that CNAs go through training and then site for the exam but it didn't use to be that way. Before you could just demonstrate 2-3 skills in front of a R.N./take the exam/pass it/pay $100 exam fee. Each state is different and usually has some department that handles certification of CNAs. Just do an internet search based on your state. Good luck!
Unfortunately, you're right about the bias against black names in the work world.
An MIT study with a sample size of over 5,000 resumes concluded: "Applicants with white-sounding names were 50 percent more likely to be contacted for job interviews than those with black-sounding names."
Thanks for calling attention to this problem, BlackOnyx! That tip really could help someone out.
yes! that is a true blessing and its great that you didnt lose your faith when you didnt get what you wanted and God blessed you with what you asked for =) i love him
and thanks for the tips i have an interview tomorrow!
CONGRATS!!!!! I just got a new job too. My first day of training is Monday. I actually quit my part time job 2day I was stuck at for over a yr. THANK GOD I finally got a full time job. God is sooo good!!!!
CONGRATZ! God can work through ANYTHING. I too was blessed with a GREAT job and found out today! The number 1 thing that got it for me was PRAYER. People do not realize how important prayer coupled w/ FAITH can do. AMEN!
Congratulations to you on your new job! What a blessing!! You made some very good points in your video and I can honestly say that the point you mentioned about "ethnic" names has proven to be true, at least in my case. My first name is Tomika and just as a hunch, I used my middle name, Michele, as my first name on my resume (which is pretty generic) and noticed a huge difference in call backs from employers using that name. Its sad, but true.
I have worked places where the application never "made it" to management due to the way the applicant treated the receptionist. Remember that person is deciding if they want you to be employed at their job time you hit the door.
Ask friends about open positions. This is especially true if you are looking for a career change. Friends may assume you are not interested in the position that is available due to your background.
hey girlie..so happy for you. and slow down sista..you were so excited you were breathe fast.. i love it!! you are so awsome.. i can see you growing into a beautiful/strong lady..
Wonderful video. I just wanted to add something about hair. We need to be mindful of our hairstyles when looking for jobs. I used to have locs and I would change the color of my locs often, but when I went into job hunt mode I would tone my color down .and style my conservatively. Make sure your hair is always neat and save your super duper fun styles for the weekend or until after you get the job and learn the culture of your organization. Blessings to everyone who is looking for a job.
Yep soo true like when i was hunting i kept it super simple because u dont wanto scare ppl the worng way ehn u walk in to try and get a job...greata advice Thanks
good advice all around! a thank you card is a nice touch because a lot of people don't do it. yes on the follow up as well! be a bug in there ear...i know i was hehe. and the resume is especially important. people should have their friends read it and give constructive criticism...congrats to you! i hope you have a great experience working there :o)
She suggested modification not a changing of the name. Reality is "yes" some hiring managers discriminate based on your name. Although it is 2009 discrimination still exists, be it age, race, religion, etc.
i did an interview last week and i didnt get the job though...but i still thanked God for making me get even an interview i emailed my thank you note before i even knew if i go tthe job or not but i say the thank you note can make them remeber you even if you didnt get the job and make you probably get a job with them some other time
I definitely feel what you are saying about your "professional face"/voice. You have to sound like you have some sense, use standard english and show them that you're educated. Good tip :)
Praise God!!! I am so very happy for you. and in this tough market too!! Thanks for sharing the tips too. A lot of people need to hear tips from real people. I always tel people that being determined and prayerful always works.
Most people know about the dress attire but I'd never thought about thank you cards, researching things about the company and abbreviating certain names.
omg blackonyxx this is such a great video!!! 5 stars im adding this video to my favorite. thanks for the advice you said a lot of good points. congrats!!!!

Woooow, talk about being offensive! I was totally with you until you decided to talk about changing names.
While I do understand where you're coming from, I don't think someone needs to hide who they are.
If a company is willing to discriminate based on a name, do you really want to be working for them at all?
Aside from that. Major congrats on the new job!!
TheBareMe 2 years ago 3
