As with other arrangements in the song, different instruments, etc., the increased tempo is noticeable, but it suits very well. The album's electronic loop, at a lower speed, adds atmosphere (different accents in notes), and all that, but playing acoustic drums without the loop at the original speed would sound plain dull.
I'm guessing that's one of the reasons they decided to increase the tempo. Besides, Ian has always played just a bit ahead of the beat, a welcome treat for many musicians.
It's undeniable, Ian Mosley sped up the song waaaaaay too much, by quite a few BPS (beats per minute) soon after he comes in with the drums....and everyone else was sort of trying to catch up to him after that.
Great interpretation from Hogarth, obviously, as always, who does a great job at making the speeding up feel somewhat natural....
@vampiroangelico I am not sure wether Mosley was rushing things... it does seem that it was planned this way to get the band into a higher gear compared to a lot of the more laidback material.
@ChrisEchoes Well, I'm not one of those "know-it-all" type of guys, but I've seen and heard different live versions of "You're Gone", and it never felt as rushed as this version. The song started out much slower....HOWEVER I have to make it clear (some fans are quick to jump at anyone who says anything negative about a band) I LOVE Marillion and I have been a fan ever since 1984, when I saw the video for "Kaileigh" and I own their entire discography, just to let everyone know I'm not a "hater".
these guys just look so casual..it comes without effort for them..amazing.great version of the song.but i do prefer marbles version.

Great band- keep going - the next album - give it your best!
ps my other half loves you because she enjoys the sun in a hotel pool in Ios/ Greece
and listening to Fantastic Place while looking out over the bay.
Never thought I'd get her into 'prog rock' -she's learning.
