Looks like AMD has a more affordable chip that is easier to program for than anything out there currently.

GPU's are fast, but the versatility isn't there. GPU's are stream processors that are like rockets-- They go damn fast at processing in a straight line, but don't have the manuverablity to be put into the Kraken. Pure stream processors cannot do everything they are asked.

It's also the reason in reverse why you shouldn't use an Opteron processor in a gaming machine. It's friggin' powerful, but the sheer speed required to run a game well is not there.

Opterons are cheaper. When you are deploying a supercomputer that has 250,000 cores, costs add up.

The costs associated with the privilege of owning intel and paying more out of pocket for the same performance becomes quite a pile of money at this scale.

If you take 1 hgh end GPU VS amd 6 core Opeteron. the GPU gets something like 8x the performance then a 6 core CPU. so if they were to just use GPU's they would be cheaper and they would need a Whol hell of alot less to do what they want.

well, the GPU is not faster at all tasks, but if you want to generate a password (hackers for example) the GPU is much faster then the CPU, they have different workareas and they perform different.. i dont think the GPU is strong enoth to run a system.. yet!

You're right. But GPUs are programmed in far more different way than usual x86 chips. This is maybe because of marketting. There is no OS system running on pure GPU.
