I watched the movie Michael Caine movie "Zulu" this morning, and this album came to my mind immediately - especially this song. I'm Australian and I love England - I believe there is an inner connection for us with the old country - being convicts and all - and yet, you can not help but ask the question why? And its not because I want to diss England, Australia has as much guilt. This album has done what great art does, promote discussion and debate ... and the conclusion, no one wins in war.
This wonderful song is as chilling as the great essay by James Boswell, "On War". It's unfortunate some of our greatest art, whether song or essay, is inspired by the most horrific nature of man.
She is what Burroughs has been for writing. A blessing.
(Fuck The Guardian reviewer which stated that the out of tune trumpet reveille sound ruins the song. When she was almost choking at the end of Working For The Man, nobody had something to say about it.)
This song is great, as the rest of the album.
And to fluffycake1: you have all of my respect for your taste in music.
more of this, off the cuff video and sound! america AND england... down with the imperialists and up freedom and creativity and health and joy and working together!
The bugle in this is called 'the assembly' and was used to call together a group of soldiers. The fact that it is deliberately used out of time and out of key in this song adds to the poignancy of the lyrics.
As much as I like the music off this album, her voice makes me want to blow my brains out. It sounds like Regine Chassange, but not the semi-healthy dose of her you hear in an Arcade Fire album... In fact this whole album (the music and the lyrics) reek of The Suburbs... blech.
@friendsofbrookpark Sorry but there is absolutely no way Let England Shake can have a level of impact on someone non English comparable to an Englishman. The lyrics are almost exclusively English in their cultural sentiments and evoke all sorts of thoughts and emotions integral to the collective English identity. America is used only as a comparison. Don't worry about it, you've got 90% of all rock music directly concerning America to fuss over.
@hippotoast alas, the lyrics apply all too well to both (all) imperial countries and indeed comparing them, as prime minister blair was of recent times referred to as GW Bush the Second's puppy. See Brit George Michael's vid for "Shoot The Dog". claiming some sort of special britishness is exactly the sort of deranged nationalism she is exposing, revealing and ultimately denouncing. great song though, do agree indeed!
@hippotoast Thanks for the thoughtful remark. Can you share three examples of this assertion" "The lyrics are almost exclusively English in their cultural sentiments and evoke all sorts of thoughts and emotions integral to the collective English identity."
@friendsofbrookpark Well three examples wouldn't prove that the lyrics of the album are almost all exclusively English, but three that I feel are more specific than others are "Let me walk through the stinking alleys to the music of drunken beatings, past the Thames River, glistening like gold hastily sold for nothing.", "Walker's in the wire limbs point upwards there are no birds singing the white cliffs of dover" and perhaps almost every lyric of "England".
@hippotoast well I suppose I just comprehend art in a different manner, that an artist's use of intensely personal matters, places or evocative scenes is meant to transcend the described incident and harken to amore unievrsal or at least more macro comprehension and sense of life, ie london could stand in for any capital city, a river's beauty or role in commerce conjures others... enjoy it to the max though and, as the sex pistols put it, god save the queen!
@friendsofbrookpark To be honest I think you're probably right. I'm definitely of the opinion that art is totally up for interpretation regardless of the artist's original intent, once it's out the door it's independent of its creator. I suppose if you strip away the hyperbole from my original comment, I'm basically just saying that I found Let England Shake to be so intense and relevant to me from a cultural standpoint that I find it hard to imagine it considered any other way.
@hippotoast Also, as far as the level of impact you say for an "Englishman"? What about females? or only men you are saying? That would be very odd given her very feminist inclinations from past. Such assertions are rife with perplexing moments.
honestly i think the seamus films correlate perfectly with pj's vision. i mean when you hear pj speak about the album she often repeats how simplistic the underlying feel is in the music. so these films represent that sort of mundane sensibility. and given that the music is about conflict and war,it's like they romanticise that mundane, every day life.
The UK scene is still alive thanks to Polly and a few other artists putting out music with integrity and substance. PJ HARVEY, RADIOHEAD, MASSIVE ATTACK, TRICKY, PORTISHEAD, THE XX, BRIAN ENO, AMON TOBIN, GARY NUMAN, SCROOBIUS PIP, UNKLE, ALLFLAWS
To everyone dissing on the simplicity of the videos: this a series of 12 shorts. How much money do you think PJ has?
I think the concept is great: documentaries of production mixed with moving photographs, all made to emulate the feel of writing songs of war in the pastoral England countryside.
@kadgi you can make really great videos with little to no money. example: the video for 'Dress,' which surpasses most of the content from these Murphy vids. they're pretty boring. I just hope the final longform film that's in progress turns out better than this.
@TeenageWildlife First and foremost, your name refers to one of my favorite bowie songs, and for that i just might end up marrying you. Moving on.
For my part,I didn't find it boring at all. The imagery is engaging and at times beautiful, digital camera or not, and the mixing with the recording sessions makes it all really intimate.
Maybe you found it boring for the lack of dramatic events, but this films are really not story driven, for it's made to be of collection of moving portraits.
i love this album so much but damn, these videos are really lacking. for me they are either just plain boring or they take away from the songs imagery instead of enhancing the music. i do love some moments here and there though.. especially in the words that maketh murder video <3 but watching this one for the first time, i feel like i've already seen it all from the few other videos released. they're not exactly bad i guess.. just lackluster.
I don't think the videos by Seamus Murphy are good enough, they generally have some really nice images and some that are not so nice and tend to drag. Parts of the videos are gorgeous and others look amateurish.
This video is by far the worst, and I'm particularly disappointed because this is my favourite song from Let England Shake.
