  • Oh, please, do not continue. We are sufficiently aquainted with your ignorance. This is not a "Study". This is "I liked this book because..." by a kindergartner.

  • @LanceLeWonder : Thank you for your caring words and wise advice to an ignorant kindergartener.

  • @LessienAnwamane I apologize. You are quite right. Kindergartners know best, methinks. And I hereby subscribe. No offense, I hope.

  • @LanceLeWonder None taken indeed! :) I'll not pretend I'm a Joycean scholar or anything. And I'm certainly a fan of honesty, as well as civility. :) All's well.

  • whats the name of this song at the beginning?

  • Joyce tried to separate himself from the catholic church unsucessfully.Religion reappears again and again. In "Araby" he says he walked through the dirty streets, holding his love aloft like a chalice, over the heads of the crowd.(not a direct quote).

  • Joyce recognised the provincialism of Dublin which still exists today.... always looking to London for approval, the cracked looking glass of a servant.. he choose another path.

  • very well-done Emily

i hope you got an "A"

  • I don't remember...

  • Excellent, thank you so much!

  • REALLY NİCE

  • i think one must be under the influence of psychotrophic drugs to 'encounter the reality of experience' in this video. haha na but seriously a good overview

  • great - just outstanding

  • from a cockney Joycean many many thanks for this epiphanic posting...Blessed Be.

  • If that means you liked it, as I am guessing, then thank you very much.

  • I loved it.

    What's the background music ?

    Thanks !

  • It's a mix of lots of different things: some classical, some world or new agey kind of stuff...soundtracks...I can't remember all of it.

  • No I found them alright, thanks. I really enjoyed them =)

  • Nice video, where is the rest of it?

  • It's in three parts. The other two are:

A Study of James Joyce Part 2

    and

A Study of James Joyce Part 3

If you can't find them let me know.

  • very good!and thanks from an italian joycean!

  • Thanks!

  • by the way when did stephen ask his father blessing?

At this stage his father did not mean very much to him, he was far beyond him. The bird looking girl on the beach was his fantastic epiphanie. Good video.

  • Honestly, I really don't remember. I remember reading it. From what I barely remember from months ago, I think he may have done it subconsciously? Not sure. Thanks for the comment though!

  • i love it!

and sry for the bad english :-D

  • I took it that Stephen is a version of Joyce. Not exactly the same, but modeled after him.

  • very good. I too have read Portrait & am currently half way through Ulysses. Portrait was certainly great, though tiring to read, but the langauge is superb. Very good video, very nicely done.

  • Thank you for your encouraging words.

  • Very atmospheric. Good music, too (recognized Schumann).

  • Thanks! That makes me feel all warm and cozy inside.
