I use Serato Itch on a Macbookpro w/4gigs RAM and a Vestax VCI-300 controller. A Western Digital 2TB drive holds all the music, but I have that built in under the laptop in a hardshell case. This setup woks well for me as a Wedding DJ, but I do a ton of Karaoke shows as well, thus the need for the large hard drive. Virtual DJ did not work out because of it's lack of search for CDG files on a Mac formated external drive. So if you don't do karaoke, than it's fine. PC just won't cut it, never did.
To all commenting on Mac vs. PC, it's absolutely a matter of preference, they're very different animals. Mac is a closed, proprietary architecture. Therefore it is MUCH more expensive and requires less tweaking. Windows on the other hand runs on a HUGE range of PC hardware which is why it requires a little more tailoring depending on what you want to use it for (like audio). Since we've done a lot of mac vids at Dubspot we made this to show some love to our Windows user fans.
Been djing for 17 yrs ,,started vinyl,,then cdj, just went to video mixing,,I use a PC tower with huge video card ,Serato with cdj 1000s ttm57sl board.. PC has I5 Intel processor 8 gig of ram...Runs like a dream,,no probs at all,For videos u need high end vid card and no macbook or labtop for that matter could keep up with a built PC tower loaded ..Good luck guys
I'm gonna go with a regular pc instead of mac simply because, I'm use to how it opperates. I don't think the audience really care what you use anyway :) All they care about is the music so use something you're familiar & don't worry about who's using what.
the more educated you become computers the more you will understand that it doesn't mater what you use. i seem mac's and pc's crash. pc's crash more cause there is a billion more being use out here. if you have the money for a apple go with that but if not go with a pc and with the rest of the money buy a good set of speakers. i have a gateway 730 i had run pcdj, traktor, ableton, and now serato had a problem 4 times in 7 years. is time to upgrade i maight get a vaio by sony.

Mac for DJ? That's a joke. Old skool Dj's have been using PC laptop for years.
Aril Brikha uses a old Laptop to make his live music. I think you saying mac's because they look good but to be all honest they not good for handling audio as Windows that's from my experience
@oOADROo I found two videos in the last 5 minutes on Youtube with Aril using a MAC...He has one video using a dell, but he's just using it for Ableton LIVE....that's pretty much a sound sequencer with drops....
Its based upon experience, once your in a large crowd you will realize how critical stability is when using software to run on your laptop. Another big one is running music videos. If you understood how the UNIX operating system works vs standard PC , then you would go with a MAC in a hearbeat.
this is bull. Complete bull............... What a horrible comparison.......... You're not even stating pros, cons for each. What in the world are you making this video for if you're just recommending specs?
if you want professional shit get a mac hands down!! im not talking about ability im just saying mac is industry standard more reliable design for more complex programming less risk of having it crash on you i have a friend who does computer engineering n uses pc but he built it like a mac his the only person i kno that uses a pc but he knows what the hell he is doing though
Although OS X does have some good programs like Logic, PC also has programs like Cubase, Ableton Live, and Sony ACID. I'd say that when it comes to producing/DJing theyre on par.
And the reason your friends computer is good is not becaue he built it like a mac, but its because macs are now built like PCs and are on intel platforms. Thinkpads and many business-grade laptops are just as rigid as a Macbook Pro
I understand what you are trying to say though. Which is why I own a macbook pro (and not the white macbook which is just a piece of crap). PC laptops can have great design, good battery life, or good quality, but only the MBP brings it all together.
When it comes to desktops, though, nothing beats a PC made by yourself.
yeah i have a macbook pro now but i used to have a pc but i used the pc at a club and it decided to have a pop up virus and it stopped the music. very annoyed and have over 7000 club mixes and so on i the dj's and the club where nice enough to buy me a new laptop and they all got me a mac
i still dj at the club now and we all decided to buy another mac which is the new 2008/09 on and its a desktop one and we put all our music that everyone had one to 4, one tb hard drives :D
hey i have hp pavilion dv6915nr pc 3.00 gb ram i was thinkin get serato scratch dj weddins shool parys in the club i shoul get a mac can you help me plis thanks
yea, go MAC...great stability...don't have to deal with viruses that are rampant with the PC...I do this for a living and deal with CRASHING PC's all the time.
to bad the new RAM on the new unibody is not a PC problem lolol.... I think PC's are just as good as MAC man...now a days.but its one of those to eavh there own
NOo questions.. simply that.. Apple is just A brand. Mac is Just as good..if not better! What people need to know is that they need enough gigs and ram! thats the secret.
nowadays, you can dualboot mas os x and windows on a mac at the same time.unfortunately, u can;t do the opposite, even tho the cd for osx leopard is out...kind of stupid on mac's part since they would mkae more money this way
Don't get me wrong my mac is a beautiful piece but i go with what is proven in the club and my PC smokes my mac in terms of performance. Oh and i spin video 5 nights a week.
And for the mac VS pc. I have a MBP (4 gig 2.5ghz 15") and an ASUS gs1 (4 gig, 2.0 7300 core2 duo) and i still gig with my asus. U mentioned about having a set picked out before u play. Well for those of us with residencies, i rarely pick out a set and spin on the fly. So the problem with Mac is not being able to read subfolders. This is a limitation with a unix file system like OSX.
ll studio books and mags i have read recommend 2 drives. one for your system and one for audio. btw WD are not shit. I have been running a 2 tb external for over a year and have not have one problem with it. Also firewire is the way to go. Don't use USB. firewire is much better for streaming audio and video as it is not burst stream like usb.
external HD's are necessary and not a passport drive. u need something that gets power from a wall outlet. most laptop and usb powered drives spin at only 5400 rpm. Internal desktop and external powered drives spin at 7200 which is much better. And having your external stream the audio data and your system hd process the program data will give you the best performance.

@mike71flores I don't know any top DJ that's a portable DJ.
2 things you have to remember Apple is a big sponsor in musicians and also, are they using OS10 or Bootcamp?
Aril Brikha looks like he was using Windows on his Macbook i didn't see the Dock only a black bar at the bottom.
i myself is a DJ, i use to record my stuff on my Mac but i found that PC handles audio better (meaning Windows.)

I dont get why peopel would say Mac is better than PC for Dj'ing...
I dj with a PC, and it makes no difference if i ran the same program on a mac....
ex: Torq... it runs on both PC and Mac, the software runs smoothly on both computers...
Id say PC would win, because there is just a much larger variety to chose from...

western digital is actually leading the way in external harddrives, you look at some others, and they just don't compare to the price and size,
but one reason it would be crashing is because the person using it doesn't have the right requirements for it.

HITACHI
WESTERN DIGITAL
IBM
SEAGATE
