@BaSsBoOst49 It's about bow position; just go away from the fingerboard,. And yes, try different rosins, specially don't use too much, and try different speeds in your bowing.
Such a charming and delicately melodic composition. It is most curious that the opera La sonnambula, which was composed by Bellini for a high voiced coloratura soprano, is here transcribed by Bottesini in a set of variations for the low voiced string bass. It is a most captivating work and it encompasses the emotions of the opera exceedingly well. Maestro Karr plays it with great expression and virtuosity. He make his bass sing just like a great opera basso. Impressive!
@MusicKit During the Q&A portion of this event Gary said that Peter Ham had made modifications to the instruments he was playing not that the instrument was made by him. He may of course have other instruments besides the one he is playing here.
Il a tout compris ! (« And she said... »)... C'est exactement comme ça qu'on m'a appris à faire de la musique et non juste à jouer de la contrebasse...
He has understood everything ! (« And she said »)... That is exactly the way I learned to make music and not just playing Double-Bass...
@andrewatwill Actually Gary donated that instrument to the International Society of Bassists. It originally belonged to Serge Kousevitsky. It was given to Gary by Kousevitsky's widow. Apparently there is some question as to authenticity regards AMATI. You can read details on the ISB Website.
The instrument he is playing currently is one of unknown origin that he purchased from his teacher in the 1950s.
@plainobase From Wikipedia: "His major teachers include Herman Reinshagen and Stuart Sankey". Herman Reinshagen is the one he purchased the Bass from. That information is in the 2007 video during the interview part.

Gary Karr does not use Bass rosin. He says it is too sticky. He use a cello rosin.

Is he playing a 4/4 bass?
vladoi 1 year ago
@vladoi actually it's a 3/4 bass. With a full size upright, he would either have to be standing on a stool or sitting down in a way that is playable.
Great video
