  • amazing performance.

  • this man is pperfection

  • He truly makes the most beautiful songs, and u can tell he really feels his music, he means every single word. behind the drugs hes a beautiful, kind and open hearted boy.

  • He amazes me, he's so talented. He hasn't got the typical good voice, he's got something so much better. His voice is very unique, in the sense that it captivates you. I could listen to him all day & night, his lyrics aswell, they're just so deep & beautiful. For someone who on a daily basis gets called a 'waster, junkie' etc, he's just proved he is so much more than that. This man oozes talent, not many people have that gift. Forget about his addictions and just listen to him, he's amazing.

  • Utter Cunt, Laughing at his Mum's worry. I hope he's happy putting his family through his shite.

He's just a shit Karaoke singer.

  • @SantaSunday He doesn't laugh at his Mothers worry, It's a thankful laugh, you seem oblivious. And Karaoke singer? I don't think so mate... try and live up to the music he plays and the lyrics he writes.

  • @SantaSunday What an insightful view on the interview. I know Peter is known for writing excellent poems, songs and lyrics but what you've just put would equally rival his talents and the best of his works. Truely inspiring word play from you Mr SantaSunday... Well done, well done. And yes the person that said that "sarcasm is the lowest form of witt." Was being sarcastic. Which justifys the terrible sarcasm I have just used.

  • What a prick

  • smug snotty bitch, Pete should av pissed her about

  • i love this song

  • His performance there of Music When the Lights Go Out was one of the best I've ever heard him sing. Love his voice. Beautiful.

  • Why does she speak to him like he's a complete idiot?! He's obviously a lot more intellectual than her. Complete bitch.

  • kristy is a fucking bitch

  • shes such a cunt she doesnt even compliment him on that amazing poem

  • he 'willfully destroyed' his guitar a couple of days ago, throwing it into the crowd after a gig! it was insanely amazing! :')

  • I find it funny people are saying how amazing Kurt Cobain was but are forgetting the other artists who surpasses Cobain by a long shot. Jim Morrison. To me, Doherty is better than Cobain but others will disagree, that's the beauty of our modern day society.

  • really wanna know where he got that jacket... :D

  • @sammooredavies camden market has loads :)

  • warbel

  • Doherty's level of culture and education and literary being far surpasses that of Cobain. But as far as raw guitar goes, yeah, Kurt. They have different strengths and come from different continents; different values too. Pete's a poet, he likes his nuances and references. Kurt was filthy nasty, upfront. Dunno... I love them both.

  • Is it cruel or kind not to speak my mind and to lie to you, rather than hurt you? <3

  • I knew she wasn't English, 'cause she spoke it far too well.

The grammar was goodly, and the verbs as they should be,

And the slang was bang on the bell.

So as the language barrier clanged, and banged,

    I couldn't hear--hear or see,

    England, London, and Bow,

    Crumbled into the sea.

    Yeah.

  • god forbid someone compared him to the untouchable Cobain (?!). only dead musicians and 19th century bands deserve praise and recognition!

    (ugh....)

  • Please never push that button...

  • Hendrix!?.....Cobain!?

Thats like comparing Olly Mars off X Factor to Michael Jackson and Beathoven.

Christ!? How can people be SOOOO flippant with comparisons?

Petes probably a great guy however.....Thats just not funny!

  • @brightlights456X it's like comparing one talented heroin addict to another

  • @matvarn

Thats my point. He is NOWHERE near the same level as Cobain.

  • I've commented before on this very interview. I just watched again & caught something I missed before. This time I see a happy shock when she switches from the BS crap topics to his actual music - which is what he IS offering us. When she asks him to sing - it's like YES! Let that beauty of a song do the talking. The lyrics, melody, the voice, how much he puts into it - that is what his fans love. I would love to see a LIGHT interview w/him smiling & talking about his songs & ideas/plans...

  • i dont think she met his mother.Nor do i think the letter is even real.Which i think is really fucked up journalism!!!!! I think to take advantage of his vulnerability like that is really fucked.

  • the most beautiful version of 'music when the lights go out' i ever heard! you have got to love pete doherty, don't see why everyone has to pick on him. He's had problems but nobody's perfect. i think he should be left alone to what he does best, write great songs and poetry

  • Incredibile la dolcezza e l'emozione durante l'esecuzione di una sua canzone mentre viene intervistato. Lui sembra vivere principalmente per questo e lo si nota quando gli viene chiesto di cantare. Il suo volto quasi si illumina. Grande Pete!

  • God I love him! I don't agree with his drug use but he is such a gifted man and I find it impossible not to like him.

  • the interviewer is a bitch

  • @vdj33

    Hi,vdj33, it's true!

  • Pete Doherty is the best celebrity to interview, he oopens his heart to every question and wont hide anything from them :')

  • No, you're an idiot.

  • the interviewers an idiot

  • Pete Doherty is quite an amazing man <3

  • Think kirsty wark comes across very well and professional. Interviewing rockstars is unfamiliar grounds on Newsnight, so for them to even do something like this at the time was surreal. Although it did highlight how notorious he was within the media, for the wrong reasons. She is sharp and straight to the point, and asking him to play one of his songs looked to me like she showed some interest in what he does best, rather than bullet pointing the obvious subjects.

  • this is beautiful.he is beautiful. <3

  • I don't hate Pete, I just hate drugs.

  • I HATE drugs.

  • @TheWhupper so you;re straight edge?

  • @TheWhupper well i fucking love drugs.

  • Someone needs to bitch-slap this woman.

  • If he sang me this song, I would probablly start crying. I love this man so much<3

  • Is there a a written version?

  • "they don't take their inspiration from the drugs, they take it from the songs"

    <3 beautiful. right on.

  • i really like this interview :) I know she's giving him a tough time but those are usually the types of interviews that truly reveal who the person is. I like how honest and open he is and how he doesn't bullshit any of the answers. He's obviously a good, intelligent, thoughtful person and i hope one day he'll be able to realize he doesn't need all those other distractions

  • I like this interview so much.

It should be translated into german. (x

  • He's such a beautiful man, inside and outside who's just had a rough, rough life.

I hope I'll be able to thank this man someday.

  • @mariehuanaa he hasn't had a ough life in the sense that anyone or anything has made it rough for him. he just decided to get addicted to drugs, that's where all his problems spring from. i'm sure he would be the first to agree that the "rough" aspects of his life are his creation, his choice

  • oh my... this makes me cry.

  • @lyrichand i really like the jonathon ross interviews cos he covers all bases about pete - music, writing, relationships and drugs. if pete's goin on the chat show, ross ahs to cover em, bt i felt he did em with respect, and without pushing pete's boundaries beyond cumfort

  • moving and so iconic..

  • im in tears, what an interview

  • When his lordship is ready......

...he IS ready. It IS announced and I DO have tickets!

  • I'm so, so sad and so sorry to hear the recent news about Peter. My thoughts are and will be on everyone. Such a tragedy on the death of Ms. Whitehead . I'm very sad.

  • Tomorrow is his birfday! <3

  • genius!!

  • If Pete had died, i was thinking, that music when the lights go out would have made me cry so much... from the second he started struming... its a brilliant performence...

  • Comment removed

  • i like how she doesn't mock him at all in this interview, it shows him for how he really is, not a junkie.

  • or crumble.

  • dkhyggelove he says...England, london, Bo, cromwell into the sea...

Bo is a place in east london - oddly enough very close to where the murders of jack the ripper were commited...but he is drawing on Albion as fatasy, fiction, truth and reality....very intelligent writing.......i hope that wasn't patronising, it wasn't meant to be...he is a wonderful poet and a sensitive thinker....in my opinion any way.

  • @mickeyvanross was it cromwell or crumbled??

  • @ffmcracdcftw Crumbled into the sea

  • it's crumble into the sea.

  • the place is called Bow. and it is 'crumble into the sea'. sorry to sound patronising, it wasn't meant to be. seriously.

  • Such an icon. In the way that he bought a style. Imagine before Peter if a star turned up wearing a tight fitting suit with a trilby and skinny tie. Thing were going more in the direction of the Happy Mondays and that god-awful baggy style. So he truly was a style icon. Some may laugh and take the piss, to those I say, do you really think you know better than the fashion label that invested in him (and it paid off fabulously)

  • @guyboxerdog to be fair the strokes were the ones doing it first in the public eye, altho yer doherty was dressin like that at athe time the strkes started - bt no strokes, no libertines signing

  • @harryspoonpotter Fair enough.

However, Chill out and do not tell people to fuck off for stating a quite valid point. It would only have been right for her to thank him.

Also, the reading of that letter was a cheap shot. It should have been read before or after, or not at all. Not blindsiding Peter.

Shall I fuck off for questioning her as well?

  • love his poem -- can anyone tell what he says after "england, london.... "?

  • and Bow as Cromwell lead to the sea!

  • @dkhyggelove

    I knew she wasn't English

Because she spoke it far too well

The grammar was goodly, the verbs as they should be

And the slang was bang on the bell

So as the language barrier clanged and banged

    I couldn't hear--hear or see

    England, London, and Bow

    Crumbled into the sea.

  • he says "england, london, and bow, crumble into the sea."

  • awhh his song makes me want to cry...

  • doherty might be a big, bracing, dandy, but in a world filled with pretentious, fey, artists who play act at being liberated, he's the real deal.

  • this is one of the best interviews i have seen. it's amazing to see how smart pete truly is, while at the same time being so dumb.

  • so clever, but clever ain't wise...

  • he is a genius, just to hear him be interviewed is proof enough.

  • Is it completely ridiculous that this brought tears to my eyes?

  • good news is he beat 27 at least :)

  • This makes me want to cry. His performing of Music When the Lights Go Out was astonishing.

  • everyone give him a big hug

  • Hes not clean here u can easily tell when hes pipin it cuz of those filthy fingers i used to base too and it makes ur fingers look cracked burnt and dirty........ I like pete

  • He reads his poem beautifully.

Kirsty Wark did a really good job there. She really showed us a bit of his soul. A probing and tender interview.

  • Comment removed

  • He is a foolish lad, but I can't help but like him.

  • i'm not english.. can someone write the poem he recited??

    thank you

  • i knew she wasn't english because she spoke it far too well

    the grammer was goodly

the verbs as they should be

and the slang was bang on the bell

so as the language barrier bangrd and clanged

i couldnt here hear or see

england, london and bow crumble into the sea

    the bow poem- pete doherty

  • i love that poem, it's so great, it just works completely

  • the fucking interviewer doesn't even thank him after the song..

  • @stellaiss that fucking interviewer is one of britain's most respected journalists. fuck off

  • @harryspoonpotter didnt know you where the voice of britain. i for one think shes a cold hearted bitch

  • @stellaiss It was probably edited out. Just sayin'.

  • @stellaiss I honestly think she's so surprised how beautiful it is that she's lost for words

  • @stellaiss She might've mann... these interviews get edited like crazy

  • TALENT ;)

    awesome poet.

  • amazing interview, peter's every word is meant and cleverly placed.

the song sounds tragically empty without carl's guitar aswell.

  • pete looks so sweet when she reads his mom's letter :)

  • He looks really well here

  • His face lit up when she asked him to play one of his songs ... Aww, :)

  • u got the best youtube name by far..lol ;-)

  • @PetersEnglishRose .... I love that bit, how can you think bad of someone when they react like to being asked to play a song ???

  • "i dont wanna die" <3

    pete, <3

  • Always had mixed feelings on the guy. Know nothing about him despite seeing him plastered all over the media.

  • omg the presenter is such a cow, talk about digging for dirt

  • what was the name of the poem that he recite !?

  • the bow poem

  • the presenter is suck a prick.

why does she keep digging for dirt?

  • at least she asks him to play a song

so she takes an interest in his music

  • i dont think shes interested in his music or...on him at all:)

but peter....omg...such a lovely person, i love his songs

  • Peter is so gentle in this interview, just like how his mum described him in her book. i love this interview, so honest and so true to himself

  • thats a good book , read it bou a year ago, tough though eh?

  • No not really, she is just putting things bluntly, but atleast its all true what she says

  • every1 knows that takin drugs and commiting crimes is cool and impresses older peoples

  • what guitar is that he's playin???

  • Martin 000-15 E

  • He is ingenius!

  • ..but a great poet and songwriter

  • totally smacked

  • beautiful

  • such a beautiful guitar

  • even the poem he recited in the interview was beautiful

his voice is so full of emotion, you can tell he says stuff because he truely believes it

and when he does music when the lights go out, it's so passionate

    i'm done now lol

  • that poem at like 3minutes is beautiful

  • this your drugs on brain

  • such a legend

  • makes me want to cry ... Pete's such a lovely honest person

  • what he says toward the end, bout kids drawing inspiration from the songs not the drugs is exactly what we wanna be hearing. people dont luv him for his old habits. we luv his music. and i hope he dosnt push the button lol.

  • his voice here is sooo relaxing, wow i feel sleepy now. only pete has that effects on me. only person i would want to just lie there and listen to.

  • through the seemingly harsh exterior, he seems so fragile and delicate...kind of ian curtis.

    which is sort of frightening.

  • this is nice, he's so honest in this interview. i think this is peter take away the drugs. mint perfoermance

  • How can that girl not be going crazy right now. Wow never new you could be so purely good.

  • I serously just melted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the person he reminds me of more than anybody is Syd Barrett. just another brilliant musician left behind by those who will never be quite as brilliant without him.

  • I've watched this a million times now! Such a great video! I think Pete comes across so great here- such an amazing soul!

  • Peter's performance is one of the most affecting I've heard; it was so tender and sorrowful. His voice is lovely and his delivery is emotionally spot on. For a person who is constantly under attack by the press he is always so openly vulnerable and makes an honest effort to respond.

  • I am also a huge fan of Bob Dylan and it is so funny to see how different people respond to press Pete actually tries as Bob is so sarcastic. I love them both

  • Dylan's sarcasm was protective, to keep the press at arm;s length, because he was rightly distrustful of their motives. Peter, on the other hand, seems so guileless in his openess to provide an honest response to what are often, very intrusive questions into his life. I only hope he has the same survival instincts that have kept Bob a creative force even now.

  • the libertines werent 'indie'

    the were rock 'n' roll!!!!!!!!!

  • i dont really know this guy but just to let you know this video made me a Pete Doherty fan... i think, im sure.

  • same here :-)

  • He is as good as Hendrix and Cobain but in their own respective genres. Indie will always get flack, because it's such a marmite sort of music. The bigger an 'indie' band gets the more they're hated by people who don't like that sort of music. Everyone does drugs, he just got caught because he was very naive but that has surely been washed out of him.

  • I think the reason why Indie gets flack is simply because it isn't good enough. Sure, Indie tunes are catchy, but nothing compared to other genres in terms of musical talent. I think it's mainly because it's too easy to make an Indie track, and because of that they'll pretty much all sound the same.

  • The whole idea of indie was started by doing it yourself, so it should sound like it's made in a garage. No one questions punk on it's playability. There's no point in music snobbery over talent because something doesn't have to be complex to sound good. (Example Come as you are.) Besides indie music has seen some of the greatest musicians (marr) And most of the new indie sounds the same because on A&R men chasing what they think people will like. If you want to listen to Steve Vai, avoid suede.

  • I adore Pete. He's so beautiful and soft spoken here. I think this interviewer was really great too!

  • Intelligent and so genuine but unfortunately missunderstood and judged by stupid peopler reading too many gossip magazines.

  • I used to be one of those people. I feel so bad!

  • hes such a pure musician.

    gifted poet.

hopefully he'll stay off skag and bone this time.

    love you pete!

best song writer since the 60s!

  • It's music when the lights go out ;)

  • I could cry.cry again and again.I think most people dont even know what it feels to go sleep and to be frightened of that your big love could be dead next morning. I really know what it feels like. sometimes I cry, again and again. to see videos he takes cocaine, that broked my heart. not only because of me. even because of him, i feel for him. Everybody, who talks shit about him, dont know who he really is.

  • That was beautiful

  • "I think that people make him much more interesting than he really is. "

,I think youre right, but when you really know him and like him, you know, that e really is that intresting.

    SORRY FOR BAD ENGLISCH!

  • "I think that people make him much more interesting than he really is. "

    Just remember...

PPL used to say this kind of thing about Lennon, Cobain and Hendrix....

Now they're dead...and that same PPL just respect....

Peter Doherty is the best name in 21 century.

  • music when the lights go out i meant, lol

  • what is the name of song he sings in 7:50?

  • thanks! :)

  • oasis girl?

hahahahahaaaa oasis a JUST as bad you idiot.

jump on the bandwagon with your sad tabloid news papers.

  • oh i know they are all pricks thats the whole point.

  • get over it. fucking all musicians do drugs.

    well in.

  • i know they all do drugs. i really dont give a fuck ill say what i want deal with it and if you dont like it then dont fucking respond idiot

  • gurl...why am i even bothering.if you think oasis have avoided drugs... your either extremely naive or just a complete dumb bitch. i personaly believe in the second one.

  • you know after watching this over and over and over again your right pete is very gifted and talented my apologizes for my earlier comment.

  • fuck journalists !!! he must be so sick of the questions!!!

he as got an amazing voice n he soooo awsome!!!

  • they always have to mention the drugs and shit

    so what

    hes got amazing talent

  • of course they have to mention it

  • Genuis !

who gives a fuck about drugs hes still brilliant

    Carl barrat is a nob

  • apart from the drugs pete is a legend

  • I love him
