Those that don't like electronics are the old school guys that don't understand the safeguards associated with them. With electronics, if the engine does anything abnormal, the electronics tell you before it becomes a problem. Most people want to take care of their investments and want to know what the engines are doing - the more sensors the better. Other old school guys don't care as long as it's running. They don't care if its low on oil or has dirty air filters-that's someone else's problem.
i strongly disagree with your comment on old school. i work on cat 3512s and emd 645s let me tell you what, old school engineers are a dying breed they can feel it in their bones when something is wrong with the engines, and would find things and know more tricks that the most qualified mechanics couldnt. any new age marine engineer would be greatful to know half of what the old chiefs have forgotten.
@thechoad I grew up old school but now we have these new Cat 3516's. Can't even change out the injector without the damn computer. Parts of the electronics are nice, but I'd rather have something I can tinker with and adjust. The biggest thing that breaks down is the sensors, so are they worth it? Its a good engine, just need to beef up the electronics.
The company i work for makes the water cooled exhaust manifolds for all CAT 3500's. You can see them on the very top of the engine. We also make the fuel line manifolds and oil and fuel filters. I have been to the plant that makes these engines in Lafayette Indiana and they are massive.
I'm an engineer and I work for a Caterpillar, MAN and Volvo Penta dealer. Cat is the best eletronic you can find on boats believe me. I've seen engines with cylinders heavy damaged and keep on working.
Some say cat. engines r unreliable, electronics go wrong, must mean the very modern ones? any truth in this reputation? I have no first hand experience myself.
hahaha, thats awsome.... we just did that to our tug, with one of 2 V16 Detroits... I gotta movie of them in action on a voyage. I shoulda done this... its realy neat.
