  • 3:18 "If anything happens, do NOT go to Father Calloway." That's a telling statement. Their own priest would turn the kid in.

  • I wonder if they can hide guns in their hats to get past checking points.

  • God help you indeed, you're screwed

  • pause the video at 7:19 - the only thing u see in the frame are HATS! each and everyone of them is wearing one :o

  • 6:14 those big open spaces. mile after mile of road and field. if you're from southernmost MI, OH, IN, WI, IL, you know what that's about.

  • Would everyone stop saying this was underrated, just enjoy the god damn thing

  • how much miles to a gallon on those old cars

  • this movie reminds me of grand theft auto

  • The movie is amongst the best I have ever seen, it was actually under rated!!!

  • Paul Newman was an incredible actor. He is sorely and excruciatingly missed. His performance in this film should have got him his second Oscar.

  • so the note that said "kill sulivan" the guy that got the note was sapose to kill Sullivan? but didnt, and Newmans son killed sullivans wife and son, so what went wrong? were they all sapost to die? im confuzed and only seen this movie once, can someone explain the first part of my comment? lmao....

  • @soulleskill What happened was, Connor (Newman's son in the film) HATED Mike (Hanks) because his father favored him. So he gave that guy the note telling him to kill Mike, and all debts are paid. The problem was, Michael (Hanks's son) happened to have detention that night, and Connor didn't know that Mike had another son. Not getting a good look at him, he shot the mother Peter, thinking he was Michael. So, Michael lived. Hope this helps! =)

  • @CatieCass Whoops! I meant, "shot the mother AND Peter..." Typo! =)

  • The music is just beautiful in the Chicago scene

  • just noticed tom hanks is wearing a nose peice as makeup...not his real nose

  • dad and son?

  • I agree wholeheartedly with people concerning the music and the cinematography. This is an example of excellence. However, I must say that it's disconcerting to read earlier comments concerning how 'great' things were with gangsters/crime during this era (aspects of nobility/honor in crime). Violence is violence, and crime is crime, no matter what kind of fine suit it wears or accent it speaks. It is to be condoned, not praised, for the effect it has on Michael and his family.

  • The cinematography fused with Thomas Newman's background music gives chills down my spine.

  • Did Paul Newman Actually Say The "F" Word..?? Wow..!!!

  • I have one thing to say about the Cinematography: Magnificent!

  • @futureshocker,

Deserved the Oscar in every way. Gorgeous lighting and look of the film.

  • This house is not our home anymore. Its just, another empty building. - Epic

  • 6:10-7:30 might just be the greatest 80 seconds in the history of cinema...absolutely stunning cinematography. Conrad Hall's oscar for this fim was well deserved indeed.

  • Wow....DAniel Craig is an amazing villain...so sinister and wimpy at the same time. And all the while with a perfect American accent.

    Best british actor ever!

  • @Hethrin He's Australian!

  • @goodgirlkay Um....no he's not.

  • 7:18

That is the best shot in the movie. (In my opinion)

  • @Jammed9000 Too bad it's literally all CGI, lolol.

  • @atomicaleb

Actually it's completely live action. The only thing CGI was the car that drives past at the back.

  • @Jammed9000 "A seamless 40-second driving scene in which Michael Sullivan and his son travel into Chicago from the countryside was aided by visual effects. The live-action part of the scene was filmed at LaSalle Street, and due to the lack of scenery for part of the drive down LaSalle Street, the background of Balbo Drive was included with the use of visual effects.[19]"

And I also distinctly remember them talking about all the stuff they added in with CGI during the commentary.

  • @atomicaleb

Oh well, the shot looks awesome anyway.

  • @Jammed9000 Oh definitely. It's one of my favorite parts.

  • That kid is beautiful.

  • "Then give Mr, Rooney a message for me."

    "What is it?"

    *Bang*

  • This movie is so freakin good!!!!

  • Give him a message.

  • What a wayward generation we are now. The code of conduct of the underworld has been thrown out the window. During the prohibition days the men were gangstas and gentlemen. Now you have a bunch of wanna be hard asses with tight pants calling themselves thugs. No idea of how to hold down a family or make real money. This movie brings back the alpha male persona that we've been missing for so long.

  • @atmchickluva Yeah, these people are so worth idolizing. Put a murderer in an expensive suit and suddenly, not only doesn't it matter that he kills people for a living, he's actually someone to look up to!

  • @Salguine its a movie shut up

  • @imanjones2010 You shut up!

  • @Salguine yup, completely true, if you can kil, get away with then still have ur morals, then ur worth looking up to, especially if you make a good living.

  • @TyberZane "if you can kill...and still have your morals (or "ur" morals, as you put it)"? Kill AND have morals? Does killing people for money fit comfortably into a moral life for you?

  • @Salguine depends on what ''ur'' morals are.Well take a soldier for example ( I am not trying to offend anyone) He goes to war,and might end up machine gunning entire platoons of POWs as in the case in WW2 (on both sides) and then they came home and defended their actions. But at the same time, for the most part, they lived as upstanding citizens. A soldier in a time of war, is a trained killer, with a high chance that he will kill more than 1 person. But people don't hold it against them,.

  • @TyberZane But you weren't talking about "making a good living" as a soldier in wartime, were you? You were talking about making a good living as a mob hit-man—"getting away with it"—and murdering people for a living. Hardly the same thing, is it?

  • @atmchickluva shut up you sound stupid

  • @atmchickluva thank you, i knew there were more men, like me.BcK then, sons rarely caught their fathers crying, if they ever did. men didnt show emotion to their family when it came to anything that the family didnt need to know. Women had their place, and so did the children and noone overstepped their boundaries. and if you guys want to talk about the mafia, BLAME the feminist, they put Prohibition on the table, and voted for it.they made the mafia rich.

  • @TyberZane The roles of men and women are now interchangeable. This is the single biggest problem facing society today. Women getting knocked up saying they don't need a man. All at the same time raising metro sexual boys who would stick their d*** in anything and have no idea of what it is to be a man. Men weren't made to be pretty. They were made to be leaders. Women belong in the kitchen not the boardroom.

  • @atmchickluva God Bless you bro. God Bless. I thought i was the only guy out there. The way i see it, if a women wants equal rights, then she should be given equal rights in EVERYTHING.that means, if u get raped, equal rights, u go to war, equal rights, first one to fight, either that, or they can go bacK to the way god meant it.

  • Just saw this movie today. The music from 7:00 is epic. The scene where everybody is walking to down the street in slow mo and just Tom Hanks and the kid are in focus is soo nasty. It put a smile on my face.

  • versatility is what makes an actor! u wouldn't believe Craig is the new James Bond seeing this would u? Great actors r just people but can be pussies or badasses anytime!!!!

  • AWESOME I LOVE THE PROHIBITION ERA THIS FILM CAPTURES THE TIME PERFECTLY

  • lol James Bond is hiding from an old man like a little girl

  • @Jackalofdeath

Apparently, you've never shot one either

  • The cinematography for this movie was just excellent. The snow, the Illinois countryside, the Chicago buildings and streets.. just fantastic.

  • @NashvilleKildCountry,

Some of the best cinematography I have ever seen on film, and I have seen a fuckload of movies in my life.

  • @thelupoistheman1

Agreed. People who say that score and cinematography are unimportant in the quality of a film have never seen Road to Perdition.

  • blood in blood out i dont fuckin think so

  • Send him a message for me.........BANG

  • Road to Perdition is much better than Batman Begins is

  • @mustwinder they are still like that very formal but also ruthless

  • I cant take Petter .. he is dead ! .. what a sad words .. broke my heart

  • This movie's on YT for upcoming 3 years. I'm shocked they haven't taken it down either because of copyright or violence issues.

  • Youtube would take it down for nudity/sex before taking it down for copyright or violence reasons.

  • I love all the old cars in this film.

  • I do not watch too much T. Hanks movies, not because of him but most stories in his movies do not interest me. But this is a fucking masterpiece.

Hanks is fabulous and so is Newmann.

  • the music is beautiful!!! all hail Thomas Newman

  • Great scene after 6.09 till Chicago.

  • NEWMAN ANGRY!!! NEW MAN SMASH!!!

  • It should have been longer than a few pounds on him and then hugging him that's why Michael senior killed him in the end 'cause he didn't care enough

  • @DaedalusReturned HERES NEWMAN!

  • @DaedalusReturned Godamn you! I Curse the Fookin day you were barn!

  • I curse the fucking day you were born!

  • And then hugs him.... weird relationship here LOL

    Great movie!

  • @EMUmonster

I wonder if Paul Newman ever said "Fuck" in any other film....

  • @EMUmonster i seen the movie 4 times and i never could understand what he said. thanks

  • What a coward to kill a defenseless woman and her child! To me when someone kills someone else with unequal defense it's an act of cowardess and its pathetic. He should have dealt with his jealously like a man, not a wimp who could only feel superior by killing a woman and child.(this comment is reguarding part 5)

  • Well, he clearly didn't feel very superior about it.

  • lol its a movie!

  • @TheSutphen then like, 2/3 of all killing are cowardly, i mean with the romans, u take a swing at someone, and while ur back is turned u get cut down, thats cowardly, then in a dogfight, the pilot doesnt see u, but u mow him down, thats cowardly, and hear is the way i feel, if women wanna have the same rights as men, then they should be treated like men, including being gunned down, now annie was a true women, so she didnt deserve to die, and connor, needed to be killed for it.

  • A great film!

  • tom hanks best film!

  • I love the scene where their driving to Chicago, it's beautifully done and the music that starts is just glorious.

  • i agree

  • "Do not go to father Callaway..." ROFL

  • The scene between John and Connor is tremendous. Really shows what is going on inside John's head.

  • from 6:23 onwards

with the music and the cinematogrphy

    everything is epic

    just epic

  • Thats right my friend!!!!!

The music is just great. Without it, it wouldnt be the same!!!!!!

    great movie

  • Thomas Newman:

    Shawshank Redemption

    The Green Mile

    American Beauty

  • @MarvelDCComicsHero I know! Gives me goosebumps. It's so amazing.

  • @MarvelDCComicsHero agreed...and the art production is stellar...lost of good chicago shots

  • I love it when Connor's daddy gives him a spanking at 1:20

  • Man, I NEVER posted any comment on Utube, but I had to say yours must be the most hilarious I ve ever read!! I think next time u should compare One flew over the cuckoo s nest and Beverlyhills chiwawa!

  • lol what comment are you replying to? i would like to know.. =)

  • your kidding right? you cant be comparing this to transformers 2....lol this is the greatest gangster film made in the last ten years, transformers isnt even the greatest film staring tyrese.

  • your kidding, right? your comparing a crappy movie with horrid acting, bland music, and decent graphics to a master piece that had brilliant acting, amazing music, glorious scenery, and something that didn't really need special affects to make it good... You really have bad taste if you believe Transformers could even compete with this film.

  • I love trolls.

  • hell na i would'nt of let tht shit ride.!!!!!!

  • All right, Methodists!

Just remember, if your local catholic church is too mobbed up, you can always stop by the FUMC. Woo!

  • The movie won an Oscar for best cinematography, no wonder,,

  • really you worked for the mob the new york or chicago mafia family u was driving around for?

  • at 630 or so that looks like the road from cast away... at the end... ahha

  • Could anyone tell me the track that is played during the1st half of this video (i.e. 2:00 + and 4:00+)?

  • "Do not go to Father Callaway". An epic line.

  • Then comes McGuire.. hmmm.. will have to rethink that 'fav scene' thang.. LOL.

  • One of my very fav scenes + soundtrack.. genious.

  • Quite the message. He shot the messenger i was always told not to do that!

  • He shot the messenger because the messenger was protecting a horrible boss that wanted to hide after he let his worthless son kill the mans wife. I agreed with every shooting in this film minus Annie, Peter and Michael Sr.

  • What a suprise a priest is corrupt. Father callaway!

  • in this movie, white is the color of death. you'll notice that in almost every death scene and even symbolic things like the death of innocence

  • Water is the sign of death in this film.

  • i agree, water is always involved with each death

  • its not involved with the speakeasy or warehouse death.

  • for both i think it was raining outside. but half the movie its raining :P

The rain death scene is beautiful :D

  • certainly noticed it in connors death..

  • agreed

  • Cinematography + score = genius combo !

  • boys will be boys...

  • Uhhh...then we wouldn't have a story to follow, would we?

  • I disagree.. i think Connor used the fact that Michael saw the incident with Finn as an excuse to kill Sullivans family. Even if that hadnt happened with michael, Connor would've found a way to kill them. He did it because he hated Sullivan and was jealous of his fathers love for him.

  • You know you're probably right. What a loser! John saw that Conner was a disappointment. But Michael Sr.should have seen that Conner was his enemy. No amount of grinning in my face and sweet talk could have fooled me on who likes me and who doesn't

  • Blood thicker than water?

  • james bond was an asshole how would the kid talk

  • Can you give Mr Rooney a message for me?

    So cold and so brilliant

  • Was the mob supposed to have control over the police too? I found it strange that all that killing could happen without someone stepping in

  • Ever heard of The Untouchables? They were the ONLY police the mob didn't control. That wasn't just a television show/movie, they were real people.

  • 1:20-2:04 Paul Newman is simply brilliant

  • wud there be mafia like this in a small midwestern town?

  • This small midwestern town was right outside the 3rd-largest city in America (Chicago), so yes, there would be mafia all over the area.

  • @IoSonoUomo

These guys aren't Mafia - they are Irish mob - even more brutal. As Davedio has said there would be mobsters in this town - Sullivan's character is even (loosely) based on a real man named Looney from Rock Island. The mob or associates of the mob were indeed prevalent in small towns during American prohibition and Rock Islan wasn't a hamlet even at the time - same here in Canada as well. I personally know a man whose father was supposedly involved in bootlegging during the 1920's.

  • @Number7smokesForEver Your kidding.I didnt know that the sullivan character is based losely on a real gangster. To what extent is the character based?Did someone really kill his wife, and child?

  • @jays2474

Very loosely based I'd say. John Looney was probably not as conscientious as the character Tom Hanks portrays. He was heavily involved in gambling and prostitution rackets and other seedy dealings. I don't know if his wife was killed but his real life son (ironically named Connor) was killed in an assassination attempt on Looney in 1922. Looney was also likely in prison in the American South during this period of time and died of tuberculosis after the Second World War.

  • 6:25 castaway lol

  • do not go too father callloway

  • don't you love how the fathers of religion are also involved in mob affairs. the way of the world

  • love the music that starts @ 6:23 or so-

  • wow im surprized, im not into this old school mob kinda thing, but this is a GREAT movie, thx for posting!

  • That poor kid! It's all so sick.

  • Im excited, as I just found out, there might be a continuation comming out in 2010 called Road to Purgatory... and from what I hear, it should be a really good film.

  • "This house is not our home anymore...it's just an empty building."

This is the life you chose to lead when you work for the mob, and sadly, the consequences of that life.

  • good quote, but one might say that he didn't have the option NOT to work for the mob. He was an orphan with nowhere to go, and Ronney took him in. Michael Sullivan is repaying his debt because of his sense of honor; that's what makes his character so sad, and yet, so likeable.

  • That is interesting, probably quite an experience.

  • GIVIN BOSS'S DOME?

  • mobsters are strange people in that they have no remorse in killing yet they are devout family men. I had an Italien ancestor that killed a man in Naples and served 9 years jail in Italy for manslaughter. From what i heard about him though he was the nicest guy ever and a family man

  • To them, it's a job to kill, but when it come's to family and friend's, they used to take a vow to never target friend's or family, because it was like shooting a guy in the back to them, it was disrespectful and considered a worse sin to them... so even though mobsters were looked down upon, they had a huge sense of honor.

  • well. some mobster had a sense of honor. like most things in the world, i wouldn't be suprised if a great deal of that is romanticism.

  • Crazy maybe not, but certainly shows how his son got so screwed up.

  • whats the name of dat song from 6:20-8:40

  • Road To Chicago - Thomas Newman

  • go white sox !!!!

  • Shit, Newman was pissed (with good reason). I can see why Connor was a bit panicked there, i would be too! Good acting between Newman and Craig

  • I like the score which starts at 6:06. I think it's very nice and beautifully composed by Thomas Newman.

  • I absolutely love the music that starts at 3:32 its very subtle and mysterious and it sounds so perfect.

  • I don't understand the "Do NOT go to Father Calloway" part... Sorry, i can be a bit slow.

  • We can do without that kind of language here, pal. Quit showing how ignorant you are in a public forum.

  • Catholic church had been infested by organized crime organizations. Father Calloway was somewhat an associate of Mr. Rooney organization. If the kid went to him and tell on the Rooneys, father Calloway would've given the kid away to the Rooneys and the kid would've been killed
