i had a '83 sx4.. unreliable as hell, but fun to drive when it worked. took it to the beach; the narrow stock tyres just didnt have enough traction bc i got stuck on the soft sand immediately when i got there. when i finally got out of the whole i "dug", the engine over heated ;) i never tried it again.
Awesome little car.. I had an 88 Jeep Cherokee 2-door with an AMC 4WD system underneath and that son' ofa bitch was unstoppable.. They knew how to make off-roaders..
Great video. My first new car was an 82 Eagle SX-4 in metallic gold. It was a great car for a long time. After about 4 years, it started having all sorts of glitchy issues and I sold.
Look at 0:18. Did these things realy get 32 mpg highway. and 23 mpg in 4wd??? thats better than some of these so called "hybreds" are offering!!!! I drive a 1991 import that gets 30 mpg. No wonder Detroit is in a downward spirole.
Not the issue. Its the age of the engine mixed with the carter carb. I actually have a slightly higher average than most Wagons on the eagle nest. SX/4 Stated at 22MPG, approx 20 on the economy on wagons. Ones like what i have is 17mpg most get 16mpg city. Wagon is approx 1000lbs heavier with the same engine. I think im thinking the right info.
No moron, it was aimed at people who like to do recreational activities that arent limited to the city, but don't want to have to live with the drawbacks of a truck all the time.
lol I just meant that pushing the switch doesn't physically transfer the drive itself, how does it activate the vacuum then after the switch is flicked?
The switch itself is a vacuum valve. Moving the switch activates a vacuum solenoid and that solenoid pushes on a shift-tab on the transfer case and activates either 2wd or 4wd. It's just like the old trucks that had the 2wd/4wd shifter on the floor, really.
and u have to come to a complete stop before u switch

@lockpickman they changed that a few years in, and since it is a fluid-coupled 4x4 it was safe to shift on the fly as well

lol I'm guessing the transfer box on these shifts from 2 into 4 and vice versa eletrically?
iainthornton 4 years ago
nope, via engine vacuum :)

is that electric?
