I too wanna work in the Gaming Industry, I know what I'm up against though, so I don't have my hopes up. I know I'll have to spend twenty bajillion hours every year in front of my PC... And I'll probably never actually make a family.
Do I REALLY care? No. And that is why people think I'm weird. I don't anything about programming, but I'm more than willing to learn, if it proves to be extra-challenging to the point I can't take it... I think I'll stick to being a writer.
@Molkifier You are right, making games is no where NEAR the same as playing them people need to understand that and see that, its not just fulling around thinking its going to be a walk in the park. its still a job and you need to work hard and long hours. It takes patience and time, A LOT of it. You cant just expect to go to a computer classs and la de da da you make a game in a matter of 1 week.
I hate when people act like that, saying it's awesome and I've played video games since I was little. No one cares. What do video games do? You play it, maybe 2 hours at the most if you're a normal person then you carry on with the rest of your life. People acting this narrow minded need to understand, "It's not all fun and games."
I recommend starting with C/++ since its not much of a forgiving program, then learn with other programs that are more forgiving and offer more.I`d also start of as a indie game maker(in spare time) and work up to working in big companies.Just don`t feel discouraged about the video.
This whole video is fucking stupid. I am a programmer and I know the bascis of 3D modeling.
Also the industry can go suck my dick. Projects like minecraft have shown that there is a huge marked for innovation in the industry. People are getting tired of Call of Duty being the same shit all over again. People want innovation.
Minecraft isn't precisely a big innovation, is more over hype caused by "youtube celebrities" and making them believe that making videos with minecraft stuff is great while the game itself is so monotone it's painful. (Hell, even one of the most viewed minecraft video is about a guy yelling on the mic and not playing the actual game)
if they don't care about your ideas, how do franchise's start their existence from the beginning then? like how did the creator of sims get his game idea to be made like this guy in the video says that will be highly unlikely
@totopoo123 By starting at the top, being an executive and bringing the idea to other executives.
Nobody listens to coders... or if they do, the coder gets fired and someone else takes credit. There's no reason to promote them just because they had a good idea. (There is in fact no reason to promote coders *at all* - that's why the turnover is so high.)
@totopoo123 The Sims was designed by Will Wright, who had proven himself with SimCity. Second, there is a huge difference between having an idea and having a game design. The idea is a video game dollhouse. The design includes the needs and want meters, skill training, jobs and promotions, the ability to build, decorate and furnish, tables of what things should cost vs tables of possible incomes. The first is 5 minutes of inspiration, the second is weeks of transpiration.
And this is part of the reason why so many indie developers have sprang up over the past couple years. Some people want to make games, but maybe not work for a huge company. Making video games requires a passion for it. Beyond just playing them.
This of it this way, you will work in a cubical anyway, and spend 12 hours a day, why dont you do something fun instead of doing something boring, that will make you want to kill yourself.
AKA Comics/Cartoons/Anime/Music industry in a nutshell. God Dammit. It's quite shitty to think about since actually EXPRESSING one's self has always been done independently. Sometimes I hate the mass markets.
Wow, I really like this video. I was smiling the whole way through. It's really funny. Thank for making it. Thanks for the effort to make it too. You must have a lot on your mind, or seen it all while working for the game industry. lol.

True, you shouldn't go into the industry will delusions of grandeur. But individual creativity and uniqueness will always have an important place within the whole.
"Now you're just taking an unoriginal idea and mixing it with other original ideas. That is unoriginal."
just like the film industry, specialization is crucial to the paradigm shift in the GD industry today. true, gaming is going into a renaissance - for the creativity and new ideas are finally passing technological/graphical progress (notice how there hasn't been a new console in how many years....?) - but people need to realize that when an industry becomes so broad, this opens more room for people to be the "best" in a certain field, say level design or AI development for example

@lexluthornumber1 but i think, if i keep learning udk and 3d modeling and all that stuff in about 3 -4 years i will be able to create games in udk. Not big ofc but like pacman :)
To all of you who are in the games industry. What would you recommend to a 21 year old College student who is currently studying Computer Science and would like to one day work on games? In other words, where should I start for practice?
@CreedOfTheRanger I would recommend working on your own personal independant games. What do you think a gaming company is more interested in? A piece of paper that says you went to school? or demos and programs you created yourself demonstrating your own skill? ;) Good luck! Keep coding!!
@QuinnMohammed That's my problem right there. I don't know where to go our what to access in order to create games. What programs or books would you recommend me getting into in order to just be able to develop the simplest of game?
@CreedOfTheRanger What I recommend is starting off with internet articles, which is what I did (though they are not as detailed as I did, it is free this way, since the books are $50+)... Learn C++ here - learncpp - C++ is the complicated programming language that most game companies use to create their games since it is extremely powerful (it's what I started with as well), once you've got a firm grip on C++, learn SDL - lazyfoo.net/SDL_tutorials/index.php - for graphics
@Rachman1337 I wouldn't say it's the "best" way, since everyone learns differently. There are many free online resources that are very, very helpful. Yes, a class can be helpful too, but I don't find I learn much in class and find the teacher's too slow and simply prefer to read and learn that way, and direct the occasional question at a professor, or programming forums.
@CreedOfTheRanger for some reason I was getting errors with the links, so for C++ it's: learncpp(dot)com, and SDL is lazyfoo(dot)net... if you need any help at all getting started or later on send me a message and I'd be glad to help out
@CreedOfTheRanger If you go to my channel and see the Rabbit Faggit video you'll see what kind of simple game you can make in a decent amount of time if you stick to it :)
Is there nothing good about becoming a game programmer/artist/designer then? I feel as if this video is very one-sided, kind of put a downer on me. I've been programming independently for three years now in C++ and hope that it is not as bad as this video makes it out to be once I make it into the industry.
@QuinnMohammed This one is for the dreamers man. The people who actually have the ideas the box robot is saying. I don't think he's talking about actual programmers or developers.
@QuinnMohammed nah dont worry, its more about the ignorant gamer sitting playing video games getting awesome ideas and wanting to work on video games, without understanding what its really about
I feel like I am that box robot. I have no experience in anything whatsoever except playing video games, but I really, really want to be in the game industry thinking about what I can do to improve and expand.
I want to illustrate my experiences and hardships as a developer, but I want to express it in a way that people will not take seriously and will cause people to irk at monotone computer-generated voices.
@Leivve Its actually both. You put up with the endless grind cause deep inside its fun.
This actually applies to every other job in the planet, videogames jobs aren't different from any other jobs. If you love being a doctor, you'll put up with all the nasty parts of the job cause in the end, thats what you love doing.
- People can make cheaper VIDS on Youtube For over 999,999,999,999 Views & subscribers.'
Oddworld made a mistake depending on the screwy Game industry - Now their going for Movie making - film making - story making- like they should have in the very beginning.
I am no game designer but I can relate with how graphic design is similar. Years ago I thought it was going to be fun and thought I could draw whatever I want but I just got the same lecture as this guy. XD
@Pedro3NS First, you need to know what kind of games you want to design. Basically, it's either Console Games, PC games, Casual Games, Web Browser Games, and Mobile Games. Next, you want to try pick up some programming languages; C++, Java, or Flash are usually good languages to start learning. I suggest buying some books or subscribing to the Digitaltutors site. Last but not least, learn some sort of game engine. I suggest either Unity or UDK (as they are free to download).
@darentamaye Any other tips. Here is the thing. I am pretty business oriented and I can focus on that part but I also like writing out alot of things. I just need to build up a creative way to implement it. Like 3d modeling. Any programs you reccomend?
@mamobster1500 sorry for the late reply. First I'd like to point out that 3D modeling is not something you just pick up out of thin air; it takes many years to master. There are many programs that you can take for 3D modeling: Maya is good for organic models (People, animals, trees, etc), while 3DSMAX is great for hard-surface modeling (Buildings, weapons, props, etc). Both are the industry standard, but are really expensive (around $2000-$3000 for an personal license) with Photoshop for texture
@mamobster1500 MAX and Maya can do both organic and hard-surface respectfully, one just excels over the other. If they are too expensive for you, consider purchasing Silo3D from Nevercenter. Silo is a quick/easy program to learn (mind you, you still need to be a good modeler in the first place to make anything good), and is very cheap (right now, a single license is about $100). However, Silo is JUST MODELING. Maya and MAX have animation options, and other "advance" settings, but Silo has none.
Im am planning to become a video game designer when i grow up, but this video just shows some of the bad stuff like yes, you will have frustration and coming up of a idea for a video game is hard, even with a team. But dont give up, just work hard and use as much creativity as you can that you have in you and im sure you will be making great games in the future. :D
I don't think this is just exclusive to the video game industry, most people go into jobs they think will be cool, and this can be anything from A Games Designer or a Chef. Your career choice is never what it seems.
This video does point out some of the bad things in the industry, but its so dream crushing, that it didn't really show much highlights.
I mean seriously, yes your working 80 hours a week, but with minimum wage, if your getting paided hourly, thats well over 500 dollars a week. Sure, its gonna be about four long and hard (giggity) days, but the pay sounds pretty decent :D
Wow... This video has shown me the light, I guess... I always wanted to work with video games as a kid and still do (17 now) but now that I saw this video I'm starting to think otherwise. Now I feel a bit depressed and I'm
on the edge of ending my high school life so I now need to reavaluate my future life. All faith is gone now.
@ReaperSho Just find different options. If you have any experience with programming go into software engineering or even web development they don't sound fun now but it really is fun especially if you have a good team
Don't give up because some random pseudo veteran has discouraged you with a text to speech video. Go learn a programming language. I'd command C++. If that's too hard for you, I would suggest starting with Java. Learn the concepts of 3D modeling. Download Blender, it's a free and opensource 3D molding software. Download the UDK, it's a free version of the UnrealEngine 3, which is used in over a thousand modern games. Show this fucking robot that he is wrong! (I am 17, too)
The yellow robot first states that games aren't really about creativity, it's about selling lots of products. Then goes on to imply the contrary when the box robot tells him his un-original, stale ideas. Well, his idea sounded like a generic "Dead Space" sort of game. Right now, the industry is selling MILLIONS worth of un-original, stale FPS games. Box robot should have been hired right on the spot for his lame idea. Which the industry is filled with right now and they're selling like crack.
@Ang3lCityOutlaw But those are based on ideas already done and most are not original IP's but sequels. And what he means by it not being about creativity is that its not all just fancy ideas, its hard work and it is a business. Thats all
i spent around 20 hours on cry engine 3 and ended up with a stupid few levels. i just want to be able to play around with some cool map editors. GTA map editor would be fun.
I've been making games for 19 years. Most of what is said here is true. Sometimes you get magic. Most times, it's hard, frustrating, maddening, ridiculousness. I've been part of many amazing teams, thankfully, but I have known people to have worked on games for 7 years and never shipped one of them.
It's likely this will not "scare" anyone off, but I hope it does. If it doesn't, maybe you can prove these "robots" wrong once you get in! When you do, email me.
Even though this is all true, the "boss" robot here is so discouraging it's ridiculous. According to this video, even the higher ups in the industry hate it and think it's a huge waste of time. This video makes me really appreciate independent game designers (like the South Americans who made Zeno Clash, that game was awesome and amazingly creative :) )
It's weird how much the "aspiring game designer" sounds like a bunch of people I know. D students who spent their entire day playing video games and claiming to know everything about them and the industry
@nianoniano1 That's what I think, but 80 hour work week is just insane. What is the point of working like that if you are cutting 20 years off your life?
@MrHaaxMan and how do you figure that? ... I get the feeling you know very little about games, certainly mario games if you think 25 years of mario is just better graphics. Is mario RPG or paper mario just mario bros with better graphics? No, they're totally different. Is mario 64 mario world with better graphics? No its the game that revolutionised platformers. Even mario galaxy through its frankly bonkers level design is very different from previous 3D marios.
its really easy if you have the talent, if you can program or draw or both all you need to do is to join some team or work solo to make a recognizable game that proves you can do it!
If you don't have talent in graphics and coding, then don't waste your time, go find something that suites you talents.
For game designers no one will get you on their team so you don't get credit for their hard work, unless you pay them, other than that your last chance is creating mods and levels for popular games
Making My stupid Class Series on my channell soon, go on my channel, sub, posta comment on the class setup, the most stupid will be the one i use. Just right 'Stupid Class setup-' and ill know what you mean Thanks
Oh, just give the kid a testing job already. He wants the job. He'll be happy with the job. If work was fun, you wouldn't need to get paid. All these little films about how the reality doesn't meet the fantasy -- that's true of any profession. Even Scarlett Johansen's job is mostly saying the same lines over and over again.
lol this shouldnt be negative its funnier then hell XD.the end is the most funny "your cubicle is in the basement and the mountain dew dispencer is to the right and the frito bin is down the hall" LOL
@killerirish I was surprised and didn't expect game testing to be so fun. It truly is all fun and games! At least working at a game company that makes good games. I was getting paid to have fun!

It seems to be torn, some people say its fun and they love going to work; others say its a endless grind.
Leivve 2 months ago
@Leivve Its actually both. You put up with the endless grind cause deep inside its fun.
This actually applies to every other job in the planet, videogames jobs aren't different from any other jobs. If you love being a doctor, you'll put up with all the nasty parts of the job cause in the end, thats what you love doing.

Hm, I'm thinking about becoming a Game Designer, but I just have no idea where to start.
I mean, I wish I could get some experience while I still can't work.
Pedro3NS 3 months ago
@Pedro3NS First, you need to know what kind of games you want to design. Basically, it's either Console Games, PC games, Casual Games, Web Browser Games, and Mobile Games. Next, you want to try pick up some programming languages; C++, Java, or Flash are usually good languages to start learning. I suggest buying some books or subscribing to the Digitaltutors site. Last but not least, learn some sort of game engine. I suggest either Unity or UDK (as they are free to download).
Hope this helps :)
darentamaye 3 months ago
@darentamaye Any other tips. Here is the thing. I am pretty business oriented and I can focus on that part but I also like writing out alot of things. I just need to build up a creative way to implement it. Like 3d modeling. Any programs you reccomend?
mamobster1500 2 months ago
@mamobster1500 sorry for the late reply. First I'd like to point out that 3D modeling is not something you just pick up out of thin air; it takes many years to master. There are many programs that you can take for 3D modeling: Maya is good for organic models (People, animals, trees, etc), while 3DSMAX is great for hard-surface modeling (Buildings, weapons, props, etc). Both are the industry standard, but are really expensive (around $2000-$3000 for an personal license) with Photoshop for texture
darentamaye 2 months ago

@ReaperSho Just find different options. If you have any experience with programming go into software engineering or even web development they don't sound fun now but it really is fun especially if you have a good team
Youngwrit3r 2 months ago
@ReaperSho
(I am 17, too)
dAMMDb 3 weeks ago
The yellow robot first states that games aren't really about creativity, it's about selling lots of products. Then goes on to imply the contrary when the box robot tells him his un-original, stale ideas. Well, his idea sounded like a generic "Dead Space" sort of game. Right now, the industry is selling MILLIONS worth of un-original, stale FPS games. Box robot should have been hired right on the spot for his lame idea. Which the industry is filled with right now and they're selling like crack.
Ang3lCityOutlaw 3 months ago 12
@Ang3lCityOutlaw he wasn't contradicting himself, he was telling the box robot that his idea isn't as original as he thinks.
lpfann 1 month ago
@Ang3lCityOutlaw exactly, and that's how the war indie vs industry firstly begun!
fdslk1 1 month ago
@Ang3lCityOutlaw But those are based on ideas already done and most are not original IP's but sequels. And what he means by it not being about creativity is that its not all just fancy ideas, its hard work and it is a business. Thats all

@PhilosopherGaming Each new Super Mario game is basically just an expansion pack with slightly better graphics.
MrHaaxMan 4 months ago
@MrHaaxMan and how do you figure that? ... I get the feeling you know very little about games, certainly mario games if you think 25 years of mario is just better graphics. Is mario RPG or paper mario just mario bros with better graphics? No, they're totally different. Is mario 64 mario world with better graphics? No its the game that revolutionised platformers. Even mario galaxy through its frankly bonkers level design is very different from previous 3D marios.
Try actually playing then dude

its really easy if you have the talent, if you can program or draw or both all you need to do is to join some team or work solo to make a recognizable game that proves you can do it!
If you don't have talent in graphics and coding, then don't waste your time, go find something that suites you talents.
For game designers no one will get you on their team so you don't get credit for their hard work, unless you pay them, other than that your last chance is creating mods and levels for popular games
