Shot was a bit high so you spined him. Very lucky he didn't duck or you would have missed entirely. I would have aimed just behind the shoulder above the ankle (I suddenly realize I don't know the proper term ... need an ungulate anatomy book), so a duck = lung, no duck = heart lung.

Spine shot, head shot, neck shot, whatever. The quicker you kill them the better. That deer died quickly, and thats less time spent retrieving them from the woods. Most hunters, even the good ones make a bad shot once in a while, hopefully not to often. I know some excellent hunters that have made shot they have regreted.That is the nature of the hunt. That was not a bad shot. That was a great shot, and it's meat in the freezer.

ive never had the privledge of getting a chance to shoot a deer. i love to squirrel hunt and dove hunt alot. use pellet gun so, when i do make a bad shot and the animal doesnt die instantly and skampers for its life i just feel terrible. theres nothing worse than having to walk up to a half dead anial and having to put one in its head at close range to take it out of its missery. i couldnt imagine how i'd feel if i had to do that to a deer under my responsibility. but man they sure taste good!

I agree that was a terrible shot...got too excited and trigger happy...that is why you measure your distances, and practise accordingly. It may be that the deer moved at the last fraction of a second as well, hard to say...I myself prefer only dead on shot's that are broadside only...love hunting deer with a crossbow, as well as black bears!

A spine shot deer can lay there in pain for a long time. If you think that there is no pain involved then your mistaken. Adrenalin is an endorphin that helps block out pain. If they cant run then they cant produce much. Intern, more pain. Bleeding out fast vs. spine shot is a no brainier. For you all that don't know any better this is not a good shot don't attempt it! If it does happen by chance put a second arrow in it to end it quick instead of having it suffer unnecessarily. That's my point.

No it is NOT safer nor more accurate. A weapon is as safe and accurate as the user. People don't like crossbows for many reasons. My reason is that it is NOT archery. Bowhunting is Bowhunting. Use of a crossbow is equal to a firearm IMO. Minus the gunpowder. No skill etc...This is why in NY it can only be used during rifle season. If your going to bowhunt do it the right way. Crossbows are legal in NY. A bill was just passed recently that allows crossbow hunting at the end of muzzleloading season and throughout rifle and handgun hunting seasons.

Crossbow's are a ways up the ladder , kind of like shooting a rifle-like bow . I stick with traditional archery . But whatever works for you . But yes , I usually stop eating for a day or two before going hunting , and trust me when you see that Deer emerge in front of your blind you actually no " why " your killing it . I don't even go to meat proccessing sites I just clean her up at camp and have some nice venison steaks !!

@lionnites1 .. hey asshole, not everyone is a trophy hunter. some of us hunt strictly for the meat, it's up to the hunter what he wants to harvest to piss off and let us shoot what we want. its in the hunt, not what's on the head that matters. besides, shooting some smaller bucks has no effect whatsoever on the monster bucks. if anything, it helps. it allows those good genetics to be passed on. not to mention a vast majority of "monster" bucks are strictly nocturnal, barely out during the day.

first of all guys, no i don't believe in spine shots, they're a low percentage shot and often the deer suffers. however, xbows ARE bows. nothing pisses me off more then to hear "hunters" talking down xbows. they have their disadvantages too. all the other work is the exact same as v-bow hunting. @SoccerMANx1 , seriously kid? you're an idiot. the closer the better, for ANY bow. if you think that's too close for bow, you need to get educated on bow hunting, heck , hunting in general.

ive never had the privledge of getting a chance to shoot a deer. i love to squirrel hunt and dove hunt alot. use pellet gun so, when i do make a bad shot and the animal doesnt die instantly and skampers for its life i just feel terrible. theres nothing worse than having to walk up to a half dead anial and having to put one in its head at close range to take it out of its missery. i couldnt imagine how i'd feel if i had to do that to a deer under my responsibility. but man they sure taste good!

I agree that was a terrible shot...got too excited and trigger happy...that is why you measure your distances, and practise accordingly. It may be that the deer moved at the last fraction of a second as well, hard to say...I myself prefer only dead on shot's that are broadside only...love hunting deer with a crossbow, as well as black bears!

A spine shot deer can lay there in pain for a long time. If you think that there is no pain involved then your mistaken. Adrenalin is an endorphin that helps block out pain. If they cant run then they cant produce much. Intern, more pain. Bleeding out fast vs. spine shot is a no brainier. For you all that don't know any better this is not a good shot don't attempt it! If it does happen by chance put a second arrow in it to end it quick instead of having it suffer unnecessarily. That's my point.

No it is NOT safer nor more accurate. A weapon is as safe and accurate as the user. People don't like crossbows for many reasons. My reason is that it is NOT archery. Bowhunting is Bowhunting. Use of a crossbow is equal to a firearm IMO. Minus the gunpowder. No skill etc...This is why in NY it can only be used during rifle season. If your going to bowhunt do it the right way. If your going to take shortcuts by using a crossbow, Just pick up a fire arm.

Crossbows are legal in NY. A bill was just passed recently that allows crossbow hunting at the end of muzzleloading season and throughout rifle and handgun hunting seasons.

It is a BAD shot & if you say they dont feel it, let someone give you a broad-head in your spine at 300+ feet per second & you tell me if it hurts... I have spine shot a few deer in my long years of bowhunting & it is never pretty. They have to be second shot to kill them because if you don't they take a long time to die, suffering. Double lung/Heart Clean Kill ALWAYS!

Crossbow's are a ways up the ladder , kind of like shooting a rifle-like bow . I stick with traditional archery . But whatever works for you . But yes , I usually stop eating for a day or two before going hunting , and trust me when you see that Deer emerge in front of your blind you actually no " why " your killing it . I don't even go to meat proccessing sites I just clean her up at camp and have some nice venison steaks !!
