Steve Tracy (the real one, I checked)is my second cousin. Being a musician in the family too, i realy respect him. He was also the only white head of african american studys at UC.
Great stuff Adam.....gleaned a few new thangs today, some cool new riffs to hone, understanding those overblows a bit better and a new fear of giant butterfly things. Good 4 part lesson.
Thanks. A few new things, every now and then, is what I'm about as a teacher. Just keep feeding a new thing or two into the harp-mill and you'll keep on growing.
I've been revisited a bunch of these and I forgot how cool you do "The Entertainer" - A performance piece indeed. I've been really working the high end but not in 1st. Cross and I really love 3rd up top. New stuff to practice.
I love how you get that foot stomping and the camera starts to shake. That Steve tracy riff in the middle was killer. I will have to try and work that out. See you in Indiana. Brown County Indiana is a great place to run.
great stuff and a heartfelt thanks Adam. Paul Butterfield published a how to play audio about two years before his untimely death. In it he says he thinks Sonny Boy's 1st position 'Trust My Baby' is one of the best harmonica songs ever recorded. He's right. I's simplicity and raw emotion create the most evocative harmonica and voice combination of all time. Check it out ye who aspire to 1st position. Thanks Adam - you deserve a medal for your contributions.

Adam,
Great series on first position. At times I hear you say "bend the nine blow," and at others Ive heard you say "use the overblow."
Are bending blow notes and overblowing the same thing or are they different?
Robbyzfly 3 years ago
They're very different. You can't overblow--i.e., raise the pitch--of the blow reed on holes 7-10. You can only bend them--i.e., lower the pitch.

'The Entertainer' performance was awesome!
I've been re-watching your videos straight through for the last couple of days. Some great stuff indeed.

you can play sicker blues in 1st position than most players can in 2nd position...it kind of makes me want to throw my harmonicas in the trash.
