  • wow, the routine on the parallel bars & sidehorse hasnt changed that much since those early olympics, except they're no longer outdoors.. lol

  • Neat video! Thanks for posting this old routine!

  • the form back then is horrible compared to the modern gymnast, but still cool vid

  • "MCMLII" (1952) it says at the end of the clip; but, yeah, that is footage Riefenstahl's team shot at the Berlin Games in '36. It's interesting because much of what is seen here didn't make into the final production of her 1938 documentary "Olympia". It would be nice if an effort was made to collect much of this "cutting floor" footage which could be edited-in to make an unabridged version of Olympia. (...Couldn't be called a 'director's cut' because she's dead now.)

  • Sorry to say that, but this is not 1952 footage. Some of the guys later on (on HB) have swastikas on their dresses so I'm thinking pre-2.ww era ;-)

  • Heavens, just see the difference with today, just 50 years! The men appear to be more advanced in those days than the women. I can't believe what that lady is doing on the uneven bars in the first 5 minutes. Just compare it with a modern day chick. Don't they all seem relatively old to you too?

Ah, the handstands with bend backs.. Such a no go now.

    thanks for posting this!

  • 3:36, a chick on the p bars!?!? Wtf?

  • omygosh WOW!! they are amazing!! but some of it is so much different from gymnastics these days!

  • 0:37 seconds, I have never seen this before

  • they had to wear braces to hold there trousers up then, lol

  • i had aformer olympian as a gym coach ,

cant seem to find or recognize edward scroby 1948-1952

what about abe grosfield university of souther conneticut .

  • It's great to see this when modern male fitness seems to be dominated by body builders fixated on mass as opposed to practicality...really makes me regret not carrying on gymnastics from when I was a kid lol.

  • I like gymnastics more back then. It was less about sheer height and quadruple back flips and had more style, more like break dancing or capoeira back then. Now it is too linear and standardized.

  • its amazing how gymnastics have evolved over a period.

  • What a grace

  • what grace??? seriously! everythign looks so heavy!

  • @eMthegymnast just remember they didnt have the crash mats/sprung floors/foam pits that are so readily available nowadays

  • @eMthegymnast it must be the slow motion... lol

  • muy buen video es muy notable la diferiencia de la gimnasia vieja a la gimnasia moderna.

  • wow ppl did azarian crosses back then no way lol

  • Thanks so much for posting this. It's great to see these routines from so long ago.

  • These are heroes-the legends of the sport. They deserve all the love and respect for pioneering the moves that other gymnasts who followed would build on.

  • all of those florr skills are easy

  • Yes but these are the pioneers of the sport. Those basic moves are what gymnasts that followed tried to better with each Olympiad. This is the 1936 Olympics-the equipment other than the grass they were tumbling on was archaic.

  • wow uneven bars was SOOO difrent!!!

  • this is actually 1936 olympics not 52 :))), sure 100%

  • great^^

  • Was this from the '52 Olympics in Helsinki?

  • No-this footage is a gymnastic exhibition at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany.

  • Oh...okay. :)

  • I beg your pardon-I did not mean to say gymnastics exhibition! It's actual Olympic competition. In 1936 it was just the Team event until the 1952 Games-where the women's gymnastic All Around Champion was crowned-Maria Gorokhovskaya of the former Soviet Union. I recently saw her bar routine on Youtube. To me it is very poignant seeing these long ago gymnasts-little did they know what they had started.. :)

  • No problem! :) Maria G's bar routine is on YouTube?? I have to check it out!!! I've heard of her and knew she was the '52 AA champ. :) :)

  • I added it to my favorites-I'm deteremined the youngsters out there learn about the roots of their sports-and it's legends and pioneers. :)

  • Classic old-school footage!

  • orale, que chido ver gimnasia antigua, hacian mas cosas de las que esperaba

  • Sweet vid. I've been trying to find one of these for awhile.
