@emp29 I thought it was a scream at first too but it's something mechanical on the plane. Listen and you can hear it repeated 3 or 4 times throughout the landing.
I might have landed with this guy on our first trip to St Barths! Not really, mine was more than 20 years ago (before I started flying myself) and the pilot we had has probably moved on. But that same clean approach and the mid-field turn-off.
that was seriously great :P It wasn't good enough just to land so smoothly, but the pilot also had to swing it in nicely to the first exit :D I want to sit in the seat next to him/her for a job.
@FFCZigzag Actually there are lots of runways shorter than this place. Secondly I wasn't talking about a runway. We routinely land off-strip with the Twin Otters on Tundra tires, Intermediates, Skis and floats...Landing the otter with Tundra tires on a 700' esker, sandbar, tundra, etc is not difficult. It is possible to land them on a 500' strip but you better bring your A game that day.
WEEEEEOOOOOWWW well best of all time i think... man that was epic, nice steep approach, perfect stall, very smooth touchdown, and took the first runway turnoff before i could say WOW.
i land here and lukla all the time in fsx. Its fun to try to land with strong crosswinds. But when i get older i am going into the airforce and make my dream come true to fly a f/a-18 : )
@fsxlucas1 Not showing off...just impeccable skill. This airport is listed as the 3rd most dangerous airport in the world, behind Tegucigalpa and Lukla. It's hard enough managing this landing in Flight Simulator with FlyTampa scenery.
@SenorSpode "This airport is listed as the 3rd most dangerous airport in the world" lol this airport is a joke..long and paved...oooo awwww so hard to do in a twin otter..Try landing off strip then get back to me.
@SenorSpode My head out of my ass? I am not the one making ludicrous statements claiming this is a difficult place to land a Twin Otter. This runway is laughable compared to where Twin Otters often land...Chop 1500' of this runway and get back to me.
@mrpilot102 I am well aware of where Twin Otters often land, including spot-landings in the Arctic regions. That's right...no runways, no roll-outs. What makes this a challenge is the hill smack in front of RWY 10. I take it you are a bold pilot? That's good, there's no old, bold pilots. Hope your insurance is paid up. Have A Nice Day.
@SenorSpode there is ABSOLUTELY nothing difficult about this approach, therefore NO reason to be bold. You would know this if you had time in the twin-otter. No more difficult than landing a jet on a 6000' runway.
@mrpilot102 lets be reasonable ppl and give the credit to the landing done at that airport cuz... no matter what anyone says... its a little harder than landing on 12,000' of runway at CYYC.
@mrpilot102 well... it is an OTTER spinning two fat PT6's.... so ya probs not a hard place to land a bird like that. Defs not a place to try and half ass a poor approach tho.
In my opinion I think there is no need for a landing like this, this is not a 12000 ft runway but the pilot´s had a twin otter and passengers not soldiers or making a war mission, A Super pilot always avoids the use of his super skills unless...
wow this was basicly turning to the right with the tail and he got some skills using reverse thrust so fast.. as soon as he landed he was using it lol
I would say he was dagon close to stalling, that would be the reason for being able to stop that fast. He got the thing to basically stall right at touchdown.
Fantastic landing....master class. But it was a but risky taking that right had turn off the runway so suddenly ... a strong gust of wind could have turned a master class landing to master class flip over. But never the less that was really good.
@nickfrey94 It stopped that fast because he used reverse thrust. You can hear the engine speeding up just seconds after he lands, and then slowing down again right before he turns into the taxiway.
Hey i have a question for those familiar with the airport. Why don't pilots use the other runway for landings (RWY28)? The one that doesn't have a giant cliff right before the threshold!
I mean, even with a light tailwind is still safer to land from the other runway.
Not a big deal for an Otter. I flew as flight attendant with JetAir Hawaii back in the early 70's and many times we flew with no passengers. That's when the pilot would do STOLs. He never did it with passengers on board but when we had no one he could do it in a much shorter distance than this pilot. I think he could land in 50 feet with good head wind. Otters are designated STOL airplane.
Bet your arm get tired after holding the throttle with is on the roof?

I mean, even with a light tailwind is still safer to land from the other runway.
Thanks in advance
defaultytuser 2 years ago
You can land on rwy28 but it is preferable to land on 10.
The main reasons are:
You can't perform a go around
You can't takeoff from rwy28
The pattern is always for 10
Wind is usually favoring 10
