I think, in order to collect bomb specimens that are as unaltered as possible by the atmosphere. If you can find a very fresh bomb you'll get a more accurate analysis of its composition. There's method in his madness - with volcanology there usually is.

I once read an account of 2 asbestos-clad scientists who rode a lava flow on its solidifying crust to get its temperature with a probe - so as not to damage to probe needed to keep up with flow: not possible by walking along the side.
