The only main reason for animal offering back then was for a payment for their sins. Since that was before Jesus came and died as the ultimate sacrifice, God provided a different way to forgive them of their sins. Sins required a blood sacrifice, the animals provided that.

I don't think they sacrifice animals anymore...
i love leviticus! it tells you how to kill and burn animals for worship, that slavery is OK!, not to eat pork or shellfish and not to wear mixed blend fabrics! it also says girls are worth less than boys and women are dirty dirty dirty. not one rule in leviticus is followed today but the anti gay one. which is why we must ignore the rest and keep that one and instill it in our young. i'm gonna go have me some shrimp.

Also, re. the 'gay' comment, Christians also draw on 1 Corinthians 6 and Romans 1 & 2 for that teaching, not just the ancient book of Leviticus... hope you enjoyed the shrimp; I usually like mine with garlic butter... :)

@ricmarc Oh hey, just in case you didn't know,
1. There were a lot more diseases back in those times and a lot more chance of catching diseases (eg. look at the wikipedia article on pigs!)
2. Sacrifice has been replaced by the new covenant (ie. Jesus' sacrifice for all time)
3. There's a huge cultural context behind all this, and the Israelites were much more considerate of their females than the nations around them
