@rbiolden THis is not exactly how history was. The main spartan army should join them later on, so it wasn't a suicide mission. They just got betrayed and the main army left them, because they feared a rebellion if the army moves too far away from sparta. (They let people called helots work for them to not have to work for them, but they were always afraid these helots would revolt as the number of helots was 7 times the number of spartans).

Thats what I learned in my history lessons.

The main army didn't leave them, the battle was planned as a stand off mission while Athens battled the Persian fleet. The main army stayed behind to protect the home front in case the fleet broke through. The ones who fought there were all volunteers. The helots rarely revolted, bu that was one reason for Sparta's militaristic lifestyle .
