Song isn't about Roy Rogers it's about the simpler time of life in the 50's and 60's and what they had to look forward to at the end of a hard day of living. So if ole Roy was a dickhead it didn't matter he helped smooth over the end of a hard day for all of those weary warriors in those times.
Great song & Bernie was the "cowboy" writing the lyrics....not Elton also they were English, and only new of Roy & Gene from saturday morning cinema....so go easy Bretthejet.just enjoy it for what it is, a well crafted song with a great arrangement.
Roy Rogers, (real name was Leonard Sly), was from Pourtsmith. Ohio. He was a real life dickhead, from what I heard from my grandfather. He was my grandfathers second cousin, and when he went Hollywood, he turned his back on everybody he knew from his hometown, including my family members. Great song by Sir Elton, but if he really knew the selfish bastard, he might have wanted to make a song about Gene Autry.
reminds me of how smug we we used to be in the US. Turn on the TV and turn out the lights we're all safe and sound... Not for a long time. Elton knew his stuff.
the human capacity to dream is phenomenal, both a weakness (if we never act on it) and a strength, if it gives us vision - maybe it's a survival trait, to keep us from losing hope and going insane
You would have had to experienced TV back in the days of B&W in order to really feel this one... you turned out the lights and let the TV light up the living room while everyone else was in bed.
Elton is someone who has lasted through time and has never stayed the same. I still love him just as his true fans do. He has never lost his gift along with Bernie Taupin......the two of them are still "mining gold"
Eu mesma me surpreendo com tamanho bom gosto com minha seleção musical! Poucas pessoas no mundo possuem gosto tão apurado, uma salva de palmas pra mim, eu mereço!
I remember watching Roy when I was young. Songs like this sure do make you take you back to innocence. Homemade shakes, cinnamon rolls, metal toys, cops and robbers, and army!
I've created a queue with the entire Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album with the songs in order then dropped them into a Favorite file. I already have every Led Zeppelin album done the same way. Thanks to all you people for putting some of our favorites on youtube
My father died three years ago. He loved movies, and he loved heroes, and he thought that providing for his family didn't make him one. This is his song.
@bavgoalie : i have 4 children, all professionals, all girls, like your pa, i loved movies, loved heroes, and i love this song, may your pa's soul rest in peace.
One of the greatest albums ever by anyone, like Captain Fantastic and Tumbleweed Connection. Superb new Elton album The Union with Leon Russell out shortly. This song is one of my dog Bryn's favourites to singalong to.
Freshman year of highschool, my younger brother and me got our first stereo system and this was one of the first albums we got. We wore them albums out for sure. Great memories and great music!
The music on this whole album is so melodic. Bernie adds some really deep and varied lyrics. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is my favorite Elton album and I think one of rock music's best all-time.
When this album came out this song and "Harmony" took a while to grow on me. But when they did they became among my all time favorite songs. Beatiful melody and lyrics on both.
The part where he mentions "lets go shoot a hole in the moon" refers to astronaut Alan Shephard's (Apollo 14) first and only golf shot ever on the moon in 1972 when Bernie wrote this into his lyrics as something he would like to watch on the TV. One day this would be opening soundtrack of "Roy Rogers - The Movie"
jon35jon for 17 u have definitely picked a very good timeless clasic to be one of ur favs~keep finding the Great songs of yesteryear and u will Never go wrong or as the Dead say in Franklin's Tower IF u get confused listen to the music play!!! Look up Jimi's old stuff , Bob Dylan's the Dead Pink Floyd and u seem inteeligent enough where to go find the Good Ole Clasics!!!
@Gilk53 I was Air Force trash and this was the soundtrack to that era...hard not to get absorbed in this album...Like being back there all over again...
@jon35jon I understand where you are coming from - funny that's how I felt when disco came out and at about 15 I fell back on the Beatles saying what you are today.
I am impressed you post on this song - This song to me anyway is one not generally appreciated by younger listeners.
@jon35jon it was the time - from about 1965 to 1985 the best twenty years in music - it will never be duplicated - it was the times that made the music - it was a reniassnce
@FOAMER103061 yeah, so catchy and his songs are beautiful. Bernie's lyrics untouchable. I totally agree, im happy he is still touring and living today. I love Elton John for almost a decade now but feel like a life long fan!
@FOAMER103061 Must agree with you 100% This was the golden age of music.I wore out this 2 lp album in 1974 and since have bought it 8 times more on vinyl and 4 times on cd to make sure I will always own a copy.Todays youth has only a small clue as to what real music is and will always be.I hope things will change in the near future!!!
This has to be considered one of the best albums of all time. I know for me....it is the best of all time. How could any album have more incredible songs than this?
