@kemorc The goal of this isn't to pirate games. If you watch the other talk, they have not investigated that at all, so no one can say.

That said, Sony can add whichever checks they want on the server side and publish them on the Client side, and if done sneakily enough, they will catch the modifications done to your PS3 and ban you accordingly.

@kemorc This allows you to install your on OS on the system, Linux isn't exactly designed to run PS3 games on it. However, with Sony's private key you could in theory do whatever you wanted, these guys just happen to be developing the system for installing Linux not elaborate pirating techniques.

No one is suggesting that everyone should pirate their media, so why do you bring that up? To pirate ps3 games would mean downloading blu-ray discs, that's over 10-20gb per game, that's going to take a while to download. ps3 piracy will be less common than you think.

Piracy still does not overshadow the benefits.

Games like black ops, even while being the most pirated game this year, still broke sales records. Piracy is a very small percentage of sales. I'm not defending it. What I've been saying all this time is just because this opens the ps3 up to piracy is no reason to stop this, as it opens the ps3 up to many good things as well.

Actually this isn't limited to consoles, but since the topic is there let's use that as the example. Things like aimbots are my main concern with the hacking in games. Most of the people pay full price for the games that they play, and I wouldn't want to see that ruined because of some hackers.

@supertrinko since its been estimated that over 4 million copies of black ops been pirated (more copies then some games sell total) i would say you're way off the mark. Pirating is in fact ruining the gaming industry and opens doors to things like cheat codes to ruin online gaming experience for legit buyers and players. The world needs to start growing a sack and sentencing hackers to life in prison cause in the end they are teaching theft.

I tend to believe posts like these are from software stealers trying to justify what they are doing as being any better then shoplifting. If i walk into a Game store and just steal a game will it make them go bankrupt? Probably not but stealing is wrong irregardless and pirating is no different then that.
