I have to admit, I'm one of the non-voting complainer. After the last election here in Canada I realized I really should be voting both to get involved and also to legitimize my complaining.
I think its a great idea Jay!!! This is exactly why I joined Cigar Rights of America (CRA). Pretty well organized, AAAAND I got a cool membership card along with some cigars.
I agree man. This is something we need to do. We did the same thing fighting HR669 in the pet world. It actually did some good. I am onboard with this.
@dighsx Thanks for the letting me know about the housekeeping video. I'd been wondering about that. So gracious of you to give up the rights to the phrase. LOL
@kylesdad77 hahaha yeah it was the least I could do. well actually the least I could do was absolutely nothing but really that's pretty much what I did. hehehehhe
I had a template letter I received and used to send to my MO congress people in reference to the pipe tobacco tax bill that is to be voted on this year. HR 4439 Tobacco Tax Parity Act of 2010. A 775% tax increase on pipe tobacco! Anyone can search pipe tobacco tax increase and find plenty of things to sign and email to their respective congress people.
I just sent a few emails today to our government representatives about a possible increase in the tax on Pipe Tobacco... I did this through Pipes Magazine.
I think anything we can do the better... No matter the numbers.
Great vid and cause Jay, I just signed a great petition on PipesMagazine(dot)com. on a topic called: "Help Fix the Biggest Threat to Pipe Tobacco"
Its a bit more focused on changing the language in a bill to separate Pipe tobacco from Roll Your Own tobacco which just recently got hit with a huge tax increase (2000%)!! and could be coming to the pipe tobacco world in the U.S. if the language isn't clarified. I think sending in letters is much more effective than an email personally.
Those who don't defend themselves don't get defended by others. I've thought long and hard about this for a couple years and think we need to study Dr. Martin Luther King and the gay rights community's techniques because their arguments very much overlap with tobacco rights and issues, in my mind. But I also think we need to get ultra creative because our letters aren't listened to. A sense of humor and fun is very much needed as well because it's actually revolutionary. I have ideas, too many!
My interests in liberty goes far beyond pipe smoking, and i suggest, that working for a real liberal society (which is really not the same like the so called liberal party in Germany ;) ) includes for example the rights of consuming whatever you like as long as it doesn´t touches the rights of others....
That campeign would be too narrow for my interests....I would sign in but I wouldn´t put a lot of energy into that...
@LoQ123 I know what you are saying. Personally I feel we need even bigger changes in the world. Maybe this is a place to start. I worry that it's too late to do any good to be honest. But I don't think that's a good enough reason not to at least try.
We did this in my cigar forum last month on the banning of online cigar sales in maryland, we got like 400 people to send letters. We also did this when this past winter the huge bust came down with customs catching alot of cuban cigars being confiscated Im going to make you a video response when I get time and show you some footage of our march
Stop being my nanny and trying to wipe my backside. This administration, and government as a whole, has no business telling me what I can and cannot put into my body, so long as I harm no one.
Before you give me your standard rhetoric of second hand smoke, you and I both know that those studies are conducted using enclosed space samples. Cut the crap and fake science.
I too have sent letters (emails) to Washington and received the standard response. I think what we are doing here on YouTube is a giant step forward. An organized group, making g-rated videos, including non tobacco content in the videos, and attracting some non-tobacco users. It's all about presentation.
@Matches860 Yep. Keep it civil, keep it professional and keep it with a clear and defined message. That's how you get people to listen to you. If you get all crazy they write ya off.
I agree with that idea. No, we probably won't make a difference, but it does feel good to stand up and DO something, so I'm all for it. Small groups don't often matter, but the revolution has to start somewhere! lol, ok may revolution is the wrong word... Still, we can't be heard if we don't speak up.
Thank you Jay I agree. Most anti-tobacco legislation is state and local, though, but if anyone knows of specific national legislation we collectively oppose I'm all for it.
I think this is a great idea. I am turning 18 in 9 days and very much looking forward to enjoying my first pipe but with all of the negativity going on when i say that in public people tell me i am a fool. I just wish pipes and cigars weren't thrown in with cigarettes and chew
Hey Jay, I touched on this subject I think, I don't know if writing to your respective parliament will help, as the anti-smoking lobby is just getting bigger by the day. I suggest we grow our own tobacco, and screw the rest! We can grow it, cure it, flavor and supply our own network in the community. That way we hit them both ways! Less revenue for them, more delicious tobacco for us to enjoy :-)
I've written to my MP about some of the bullshit they have proposed here in England so I'm a fully paid up pisser. That said the government relies on the extreme taxes we pay here so their hands are tied somewhat. Still we must not passively accept tyranny.
i agree. 1st its an adult choice and 2nd what else would be banned since it isa sure fire death sentence? idiots let me do to myself what i choose! grrrrtr
If we banded together like the gay sommunity has we could get some things changed. It is sad that you can't smoke in tobacco stores in most states now. How does that make any sense? I'm with you, I have sent plenty of letter but I will do it again!
@nickandhispipe I can never figure that out, they sell tobacco only yet you can use it there. huh? Like going to a bar but not being able to drink the beer.
As far as the "not voting" subject goes, I direct you to George Carlin's opinion on not voting.
As for letter writing and signing, I think it would be a good introductory stage to forming an organization (similar to an NRA for gun rights) that fights for "smoker's rights". I'll start researching it, as I suspect there's already a group out there.
@oldpipepops This is the problem I have with the whole thing to be honest. I worry that it's too late for anything good to happen, on any issue. The old system is so intrenched (and so rich) any hope of fixing things has long sailed away.
I ager with you 100% all the way. If you don't do something you can not and should not say a dam thing. I will try and say something to my State goverment and you are right it may hlep out for the better in the end late us Pipe Smokers pray for it. And you should try all of the Borkum Riff and all the Captain Black Blends in the pouchs that is what I like a lot.
I thought about this before, I found some petitions online. I signed them all. Still there should be something more organised. A mailing list maybe. Some kind of constitution that everybody can agree on. As you know the borders between what's okay and what's not is very blurry. I think the most important part is that there is a big difference between pipe/cigar smoking and cigarette smoking. the whole thing would need to be very specific and clear to understand.
Great initiative Jay! I've tried the letter approach over here as well, but it's very hard to know whom to target with the letter to get the most impact. Aim too high, and you'll get a standard reply from some secretary to the secretary. Aim too low and you might get sympathies, but from some some guy who don't have the power do do anything. I was thinking media, but they follow public opinion and we all know what that is. Maybe we could use YT in some way?
@Flieger671 Yep I totally hear ya about having a hard time finding the right person to complain to. And it would be neat if we could come up with some way to use YT. That seems like a tool that if done right could really help the cause.
i agree let group up and do something you got my support im tired of taxes like they are and tired of the tin tobacco nazi around here ohhh BTW i did vote and i didnt vote for change lmao but politics effects poeple alot more different and poeple can argue all day about it but at the end of the day if we all dont ork together we get no where
@dighsx i agree i think we can do something as long as we go about it civil cause my dad said something to me that his father said to him there is a limit to how smart you are but it unlimited of how dumb you can be so i figure civil and alittle bit of class is what where going to be needing so you get your pimp hat and i get my Bandana and will both get us a pipe and will take over these taxes and plant a pipe tobacco flag in the state laws ass for baning smoking LMAO! couldnt help my self :P
I really wish i could lend my signature but unforntuatly im under 18 and to the old, rich, white politician my opinion means nothing.
