Well... Actually they are supposed to be taken out by a vet. Puncturing the botfly makes it release toxins. The bloody area around the wound needs to be scraped. It's tissue that won't heal. ( that's for if it's a botfly larvae)
if you feed the dog the botfly it could damage its stomach system and possibly kill the dog cause dogs have trouble eating small things so they tend tto just swallow it if your dog lived your lucky it actually chewed but be careful next time

Poor Chubby I feel his pain. I got a botfly from Costa Rica in my head, wasn't as big as that one though, poor pooch. He's braver than me, I screamed when my mum pulled it out haha, felt like a giant nylon brush was coming out of a tiny hole in my head. You could of left it in if you wanted to wouldn't of done any harm, but I'm sure Chubby is happier now without his parasitic friend ha.
I hope you people realize that most surgeons and doctors would just assume its a cyst and send you on our merry way. He did the right thing to remove it, as its much easier AND safer to remove it this way then taking a fucking scaple, cutting your skin layers to pull it out.

oh for crying out loud im tired of getting comments from this video, lets put it this way. any cleaning of the wound a doctor would do is the same rules any ordinary person can do. if you do it right and it get infected still then it was beyond your control, would have done it anyway if a doctor did it. there is NO special trick to cleaning an open wound. just ask your doctor and im sure he/she would gladly teach you.

my oldest dog is 15 years old, from a shelter and still a great, loyal, active dog i think im doing fine. oh and they also eat a giant $17 bag of ol' roy from Walmart not the best but they are healthy and they love it. all of them get vet care just not for something simple as this. think im a horrible pet owner, then go ahead but my dogs are family members not things to pretty up and show off to other people.

There is not always a need to see a vet, there are some things a compitent owner can do for themselves. Only when i can't deal with something i will take mine to the vet. Infact i think this guy helped his dog as it wasn't stressed by any means, but a visist to a vet may well have put a lot of undue stress on the dog.

im watching all these botfly videos becus i once saw one in discovery channel and i recently went to south america now its actually been 2 months since i came bak and i didnt fell anything moving in head or anything(im actually 12 so i thought it was just a zit but wen i poped it it looked like a miniature botfly not even the size of the tip of a ball point pen but im sacred and i dont know wat to do

Poor Chubby I feel his pain. I got a botfly from Costa Rica in my head, wasn't as big as that one though, poor pooch. He's braver than me, I screamed when my mum pulled it out haha, felt like a giant nylon brush was coming out of a tiny hole in my head. You could of left it in if you wanted to wouldn't of done any harm, but I'm sure Chubby is happier now without his parasitic friend ha.

I hope you people realize that most surgeons and doctors would just assume its a cyst and send you on our merry way. He did the right thing to remove it, as its much easier AND safer to remove it this way then taking a fucking scaple, cutting your skin layers to pull it out.

Well the dog didn't yelp in pain, and I've watch bot fly removals and some people scream like they are getting a 12incher. Go Chubby. To cassandrabillie, glad to see you have plenty money to go to a vet, sometimes your 1000's of miles from one then what do you do? Let your dog be eaten alive? No you use what you have brought with you to solve the problem.

SURE! go to a vet and pay up the ass to have something as simple as this done. and yes you will pay a lot because the vet will not only charge for extracting the bot fly but also blood work which really doesn't make sense since they are going to give you a prescription for antibiotics anyway which is NOT cheap. i guess it is just another way to jack up the price of your bill to do unnecessary tests. wonderful advice people.

@rebecca201021 that doesn't mean a lot, squeezing something like that trying to get it out with the wrong instrument can easily blow some nasty stuff back into the wound that cleaning as the owner would do is not going to work well. If it does get infected then it's going to cost much more, especially if a vet has to now go in and surgically remove a portion that broke off deep in the wound that was missed. You wouldn't play surgeon on your baby why would you do it to your dog!

oh for crying out loud im tired of getting comments from this video, lets put it this way. any cleaning of the wound a doctor would do is the same rules any ordinary person can do. if you do it right and it get infected still then it was beyond your control, would have done it anyway if a doctor did it. there is NO special trick to cleaning an open wound. just ask your doctor and im sure he/she would gladly teach you.

@doggiejigs he did just fine removing it Mr. im such a great pet owner, i worked in a vets office for 4 years and thats basically all we used to extract bot's...pliers and clean water,alcohol,shaved the fur,then put on a bandage. I can obviously tell you're the type that buys the most expensive dog food,food bowls,dog beds, and infact even bought your dog(which is terrible..you NEVER buy animals from anywhere but a shelter), so to the guy who helped his puppy in this vid, you have vet approval

@BlakeTahoe I never get dogs from a shelter due to their stupid policy on speutering required, you also wind up with other people's rejects, the ones THEY originally got from the pet shop or puppy mill, or one of their offspring.
I buy from show breeders who do the testing and genetics and stand behind their dogs with a contract.
Yup, I buy the best food- Canine caviar, runs about $54 with shipping for a bag, but its excellent.

my oldest dog is 15 years old, from a shelter and still a great, loyal, active dog i think im doing fine. oh and they also eat a giant $17 bag of ol' roy from Walmart not the best but they are healthy and they love it. all of them get vet care just not for something simple as this. think im a horrible pet owner, then go ahead but my dogs are family members not things to pretty up and show off to other people.

@doggiejigs you do have a point about the shelters hitler like policy on neutering..ive never agreed with that...i just dont agree with people making a living off mass breeding their own animals to the point they have mental unstable and sometimes violent litters, as a vet for 4 years ive seen not all of it..but quite a few things that mentally mess you up(one dog came in because the owner chained its right front paw to a fence and ended up cutting off the paw he said "because it kept running"

@doggiejigs - you obviously don't know that botflies have antiseptic agents in their saliva??? Thought not, the dogs leg will be fine, he too has antiseptic agents in his own saliva so a few licks will sort it out no problem, sometimes I wonder if my degree in Animal Behaviour is worth it!

There is not always a need to see a vet, there are some things a compitent owner can do for themselves. Only when i can't deal with something i will take mine to the vet. Infact i think this guy helped his dog as it wasn't stressed by any means, but a visist to a vet may well have put a lot of undue stress on the dog.
