I may be way off base here, but it looked to me like the girl was lip-syncing. And the band (IMO) really didn't look/sound like they were playing the instruments either. Now, obviously Steven didn't sing each and every "We Fade to Grey" we heard (like the echoed chorus lyric) & I certainly didn't expect him to. But I'm now questioning if he was also lip-syncing (all or in part). When I stand up, the ground seems to get further away from my head.
@CaesiusX Obviously they're lip syncing.. the entire track is playback - you think two keyboard players (one carrying it like a guitar) can make all the sounds on the track? there is a shitty bass, shitty drumkit, shitty synth, etc, etc... ridiculous sound effects... and so on.
You cant play that with just two instruments - instruments that they're just holding in their hands, swinging them from side to side as they "dance".
hey, i'm looking for this version thats in this video, but i cant find it. its not from datura or what? i have the kama edit from datura, but its not the same as shown in the video. can anybody help me?
fade to grey is classic exactly the way it is. Currie/Payne might have composed it, but the sensibilities that shaped it into the timeless classic obviously do not rest in any of the visage members individually, it seems to have been a lucky quirk of fate.
unfortunately.
Ultravox has done some good stuff, but the attitude was very different.
Midge Ure's "irish folk" version of FTG is at least as disturbing to me as the Datura travesty.
He took the main riff idea from a friend and made a complete song of it .. and yet you say he only produced the lyric. Oh I almost forgot to call you a dumbass again
Would you knock it off, jesus. You're quite the king of drama. Insult me all you want, makes no difference to me. Midge wrote the lyrics and composed the main riff and hook. Wikipedia it .. I will not respond to any more of your jargon.
Sure lets take you up on your wikipedia suggestion. Here's what it says:-
"The song's structure was primarily composed by Billy Currie and Christopher Payne. While setting the track listing of the Visage album, Midge Ure composed the song's lyrics after Billy Currie suggested the use of the melody for the album"
If you have some problem understanding that, that's your problem. Believe whatever makes you happy.
... Steve actually did quite well in this vid .. 11 years later he did again in a 2005 show, now that one was crap. But in this one he did good. The drugs caught up in '05
As far as I have read, Steve was a front for Midge's composing and Steve didnt do what Midge wanted and maybe Midge didnt make as much money as he might have liked from Visage.
Not much more. I just vaguely remember seeing an article about Visage coming to NYC and Steve Strange riding up to a club on the back of an elephant. In an article featuring Ultravox, Midge said he thought Steve was "sick" to ride the animal, and left Visage not long after.
Not just him Chris Payne also wrote it , it was orginally Toot City which the Numan band used to play at soundchecks, Midge Ure wrote the words to it I think later on
Yeah well, i love the song and still do, steve's still playing on it and makeing some small cash and midge and billy currie are still making a shed load even after all these years. if i was steve i would do the same and why not, he's not a writer so there, midge is a millionare twice over same as billy good luck to them... good songs from the 80's love em...
Well, this doesn't sound bad a reinvention of the original but frankly, Visage shouldn't have been known just for this lonesome hit - imho, they had far better songs on their first two albums - everytime I find some Visage/Steve Strange footage here, he's mostly captured performing 'Fade to grey' like it's the only song he ever recorded... sounds pathetic despite the fact it's still a massive hit.
To be fair the 12" of the datura version was a damn good dance track. I think Midge's disparaging comments might be to do with the personal issues he had with Steve....
I have noticed he seems at times eager to clear things up over the credits for Visage, but as you mention it is easy to understand why (just see his reaction to the interviewer asking "So you were in Visage" in this video).
Midge knows the score. "Sounds like Aqua" haha! Yeah this video must be from around 1997 or so. Datura were a crazy band, they actually were obsessed with the Datura plant, one of the most dangerously disassociative hallucinogens available!
That girl singing with Steve was pretty hot though... :O
Bell Post! Grazie Mille! Stavo cercando per questo canzone con Midge Ure cantando sul guitar, ma bello tutto lo stesso! Se lo trovo. lo metto su!

Was that necessary? Fade To Grey is a synthie classic. And as such, it has a certain air to it. It is NOT a dance song, for crying out loud.

Midge "made the music good"?
Erm, he wrote the lyrics. That was it.
Cathain78 2 years ago
And he produced the music, why do you think Visage sounded so good
vienna73uk 2 years ago 4
Because Currie is a good songwriter?

He also composed it, dumbass
offthelinegt 2 years ago
Wrong, Billy Currie and Christopher Payne composed the tune.
You shouldn't call people childish names before checking your facts. It's always liable to end up making you lok stupid..
Cathain78 2 years ago 5
Oh okay lol, Midge had nothing to do with Fade to Grey whatsoever then .. I think you need to read your facts closer and learn to spell. Dumbass
offthelinegt 2 years ago
I didn't say he had nothing to do with Fade to Grey. I said he wrote the lyrics, not the tune.
Do you suffer from compehension difficulties?
Coupled with tourettes that compells you to use the idiotic phrase "dumbass" in every post?
I'm sure your doctor finds you a fascinating case.

Datura cover of 'Fade To Grey' is EXCELLENT! and sounds nothing like bloody Aqua. So it is very danceable - what's wrong with that?
I love Ultravox and respect Midge but his recent stuff is totally boring. He is just out of touch.
Can someone please upload the entire Datura video to 'Fade To Grey'?

Yeah, the Kama version by Datura is cool, don't know why Datura didn't use it as the video version.
Regarding Midge and Steve, I certainly saw some animosity on Midge's part in the interview!
Poor Steve though, he's not had the best of times...
Jarren202 2 years ago
Actually, I think Midge is a lot more respectful in this interview towards Steve, giving him credit for being the image of the band.
I've seen other Midge interviews where he felt slighted that "Fade to Grey" is more synonymous with Steve than Billy Currie, Chris Payne and himself.
Obviously, Midge's career went uphill since then, and unfortunately, Steve's didn't. So credit to Midge for keeping it classy in this interview.
