Your dog is soOoOo CUTE! But I am totally biased, because he/she looks EXACTLY like my Shih-Tzu LOL...except that my Angel has a bumblebee-shaped grey marking on her back :)
I'd go with clicker training if I was you - all dogs love clicker training and respond brilliantly to it.
Make sure you are consistent in your training, provide loads of feedback to your dog, keep training sessions short, sharp and focused and also use treats that your dog loves.
All the best with your Shih-Tzu, they're great little dogs.
Very interesting. We are getting a Chihuahua on the 18th of Sept. She will be 8 weeks then and we will be able to bring her home. I want to first start on the potty training...Is the "Clicker" a good way to train with that?
your dog's so cute! she look like an ewok begging like that. i have a fat lhasa apso and she looks like a buddah when begging lol. how long did you train your dog to beg? :D
It all depends on your dog and your skill as a trainer.
In the long run it doesn't matter how long it takes to teach a new trick or any behavior. The important thing is to have fun with it and enjoy the process.
Dang, how many treats do you have to give your dog... He's going to be obese after all those treats and he'll be passing out instead of begging. I do like that method though, but not so many treats.
Yes you need to give your dog lots of treats when building a trick.
Keep in mind that the treats are very small and healthy. Plus you can always weigh the treats and take the total weight off your dog's daily meal allowance.
Cool, thanks. I'm sure sit and down are quite easy. What do you recommend for stay? High five would probably be a good one that I would be interested in seeing.
Keep clicking any raise of the head but slowly raise the target stick so your dog must lift up off his haunches to reach the stick. If he doesn't reach up, he doesn't earn a click or treat.
Note: Ensure that your dog is in good physical health and capable of rocking back on his haunches.
The "Beg" trick took me and Macy about two weeks from start to finish. We undertook many short sessions per day until she was comfortable responding to only the verbal cue word.
She really is a smart dog :) I'm jealous .

Smart Dog! Why not put it on cue - call it a "sit pretty" and make sure you reinforce the behavior.

Hi - thanks for your kind comments.
Me and Macy went through the steps required to learn the "Beg" over a two week period. This involved many short 2-3 minute sessions each day.
All the best with your dog.

Too many treats...
Devikvampire 3 years ago
I don't think he's giving her like a whole treat; probably the size of a piece of kibble. It's what most trainers do.

This is a great training technique. How long should this take to implement?
