As a kid I thought this song was really pretty up until the lady started singing high pitched and dramatic in the background. It sounded to me like she was showing off and I couldn't help but crack up whenever I heard it!
As a 28 year old adult now, I absolutely LOVE this song! The lady in the background still brings a wistful smirk to my face, but I appreciate the beauty of her solo a lot more now.
Shit, the last time I watched this, I almost cried. I'm not kidding. I can't watch this without choking up. <:') Even as a little kid, I was taken away by the beauty of this.
I remember when I was 3-4 years old waking up in the middle of the night and my mom putting this tape on to get me to sleep. This song goes so well with the Ave Maria segment from Fantasia.
I was 4-5 years of age when I first saw this and I watched this tape every year till about the age of 10 around the time the tape broke (Im 20 now). I was raised Catholic but I havent been as much as a religious person as other people in my family. But when I heard this song (and still do), throughout the song, specfically the second verse and ESPECIALLY the "Christ the Saviour is born" part, I can actually feel within myself the presence of God who is watching over me and guiding me from above
I THINK I'VE HEARD THESE SOMEWHERE BEFORE: HORUS was born of the virgin Isis on December 25th & had 12 disciples & was crucified, buried in a tomb and resurrected.Mithra was born of a virgin on December 25th & had 12 companions or disciples. He was considered "the Way,the Truth and the Light, the Redeemer, the Savior, the Messiah.Krishna was born of the Virgin Devaki. He's the 2nd person of the Trinity, and proclaimed himself the "Resurrection" and the "way to the Father." WAKE UP!
This song fits the visual so well. I still count "Fantasia" as one of my favorite films. Combine it with one of my favorite Christmas carols, and we have a match made in heaven. Merry Christmas to you all.
Where it says "From heaven above" voices actually sing "From heaven afar". And I checked on Google, the latter ("afar") is correct one. ;) But otherwise it's perfect video. :)
Beautiful version of this song. I watched this on VHS every year growing up as a child. The seriousness of the song with the mix of the muted purple and blue graphics gets you at then end when you are younger. Gives you that chill down your spine that reminds you of what the season of Christmas is all about. Can't wait to show my kids this one day as well. Have a safe and merry Christmas.
I wish there weren't the "sing-a-long" bit as the animation in the background is beautiful and the purple font kind of hurts the atmosphere, but I'm glad that Disney taught the lyrics to a (gasp!) religious Christmas songs to the kids who watched the tape.
:') Ahhh... I remember watching this as a kid and thinking "Oh my God, this is so beautiful!" I sort of get choked up whenever I see these Sing-Along tapes. The nostalgia hits me hard. And just think; Christmas will be here in only two months! 8D
@MikePYaDig It's from 'Fantasia"- specifically the "Ave Maria" portion of the "Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria" segment. "Fantasia" was made in 1940.
@RunikaMori The group is called Living Voices. Just google "Living Voices Sing Christmas Music" and there is a free download on the first page. I hope that helps.
Awhh! I used to love this song when I was a kid watching Disney movies in my moms room :) this literally made me cry because I just tried to find this tonight and I found it! Thank you!! Disney movies are sooo inspirational!!
In my family we always watch this video at Christmas when we are putting the tree up - we even went to the trouble of borrowing a friends video player so that we could watch it, along with all the other stuff we like to watch at Christmas, like The Snowman, Father Christmas and The Bear.. x
This is the nicest version of silent night I have ever heard...had it on VHS for my kids...thanks for posting this! Can't belive it is Jan and I'm listening to it now-pretty song ;)
I love the Christmas season because of how it is a joyful time of giving and for cherising one another. Christmas is also the time when folks get to spend time with their family and when we get to celebrate the birth of Christ.
@BethanyAwSomeness Yeah i remember being a kid and watching this VHS every Christmas. Kids these days have no imagination and no real tradition. Its just video games and more video games, now no kids play with toys on Christmas. Its kinda sad.
I'm not a religious man, but I'm glad Disney did songs like this for the Christmas Sing-Alongs. It allows children to know both sides of Christmas. It's too bad that Disney will never do something like this again. Political correctness has gone too far. Thank you for posting this. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas.
@CartoonFan56 Not sure what you mean by political correctness, but I agree! It sucks that Disney's not like this anymore, stupid Jonas Sisters and other dumb shit.

If there were no such thing as Christmas or any other holiday, the world would be BORING.

If you were born before 1990 and this doesn't make you feel like a kid again, you need to go ask your parents why they robbed you of a childhood
