  • Thanks for posting! Was so scared when maltese dog did that until I saw this vid.

  • Thank you so much! Mine does the same thing. He checked out 100% healthy at the vet but I still worried until now.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I have a female Maltese that just turned a year old in December. The first time she did this is scared the crap out of me so I've been searching the web and Youtube videos to see if someone explained this and if their dog was doing the same thing! It still makes me nervous when she does this and I will be making a vet appt for her! Again, thank you for posting this video!

  • my dog is another breed but he is small, he does this all the time and scares the crap out of us. thank u so much for taking the time to post this!

  • I am so relieved I saw this!! Thank you so much for posting this! My 5 month old shih tzu just did this sound and I was freaking out. I thought it was something really bad. So again, THANK YOU! :)

  • My maltese does this too. It scares me very much =(, because he is barely going to be a year old. Strange thought cause he only does this before we go to bed.

  • My Maltese has been doing this all her life. Not nearly as loud or severe as your dog, but she does it, especially after running across the house to greet us, she's 15 now and still very healthy for her age :)!

  • i think your dog has patella luxation from the limping

  • He looks like my dog

  • Thank you so much for posting this!!! I have a Shih Tzu Terrier mix and she has done this on and off since I got her almost 10 months ago. I figured it was asthma or something, It would only happen certain times, when she gets most excited. When I had to take her to the vet last because she was sick, I mentioned it and she told me to youtube a video about reverse sneezing to see if thats what she was doing. And thankfully your video helped confirm it! :-)

  • OMG, looks exactly like my lil Miller Girl, and yes it scared the heck outta me, thank heavens I had friends to tell me what it was!

  • @christiangirl03 Its usually normal. My dig does this when he wakes up.

  • My dog does this 2, but if i hold his snout and rub his tummy (same time) it will stop

  • My mini pinscher does this, and I'm really scared. So this is called reverse sneezing? is this contagious? What causes this? is there a cure? :(

  • This happened to my chihuahua today and my parents and i freaked out. we took him to the vet and now we are VERY relieved to now its normal and he is ok. by the way you dog is adorable:)

  • Thank you so much for posting this video! My 2 year old maltipoo, Orea, started reverse sneezing at 4am on a school night! At first I thought she was choking on something so I quickly woke up my parents. We realized it had something to do with her nose. We're bringing her to the vet tomorrow originally for a tapeworm problem, but we'll bring up the reverse sneezing problem as well. Again thanks for the help!!

  • My dog Is a Maltese-poodle(maltie-poo) and she does the same thing. It was very scary the first time she did it. Now I know it's normal. Hahaha thanks !!

  • ours did the weird honking thing to, its kindy funny..were always like BREATHEEE. it sounds a little different than your dogs tho. we took him to the vet, and they said it was fine, its natural. we were like shit.

  • It's trachea collapse, my Maltese does it whenever she gets excited. Its a sad result and fact of the dog breeding process.

  • such a little homo

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • Help, my dog chihuahua does the same noise, but the vet says its his trachea and might need a stent. He took xrays and did test, but my dog makes the same noise as this little guy in the video

    silvio@rogers.com

  • Your dog is sooo cute!! Is he a full maltese or is he a mixed breed?

  • Thanks for this!! My morkie (Maltese/yorkie mix) Louie does this too! Actually, my vet told me the same thing and that it's common in toy breeds. It's just comforting to observe another dog experiencing the same thing! =)

  • It's called a Collapsed Trachea. You can give your dog a very very small amount of honey or even just hold her butt above her head.

  • my dog does this all the time..no biggie

  • So does this mean that my Maltese doesn't have asthma?

  • my maltese argus does that all the time! sometimes it gets me worried

  • this means kennel cough like a cold for a human

  • thats exactly how my sister's dog does it. Thank you for posting this. I was worried so much when our dog did this and was reading up on how there's 2 distinct noises that mean 2 different things one of which was reverse sneezing but reading how it sounds like and hearing it are 2 different things.

  • My peke does this a little bit and at first I just joked that she was a drama queen, but when we were outside she was doing it a lot, so I looked up possible causes and it sounds pretty much like this. Thanks!

  • My maltese does this too. Sometimes I think it's just their way of trying to clear phlegm in the throat, like that awful noise humans make sometimes for the same reason.

  • my beagle does this too.. it worries me but my vet said it happens with small dogs... you can either rub their throat or blow a quick gust of air into their nose and it will subside, my vet told me those techniques and both work.. blowing in their nose works faster but the dog seems like he's rather be pet/rubbed on his throat.

  • Man that could be lung worm

  • My shima, Brinkley, just did this last night. And he didn't run around. He stopped suddenly and started struggling for breath. I rubbed his back and chest, and after a few seconds, it quit. I slepted on the couch beside his pen all night in case he had another episode. We had our carpets cleaned a couple weeks ago. Possibly this is what he is reacting to. Now I know it is called a "reverse sneeze".

  • Thank you for posting this. It is NOT cruel at all...but educational. The first time your Maltese does this, it scares the crap out of you and cost alot of money rushing them to an emergency vet just to learn that it's QUITE COMMON for the BREED.

So THANK you...and boy do I wish I had seen this before coughing up the 200 bones to be told he's absolutely FINE. :)

  • @MochaMoguls thank you

  • @MochaMoguls we have a maltese and that is actully were the dogs snout is shorter then others its having a trouble getting air, you might say. your vet would want to now about this.

  • @MochaMoguls Stupid vets, that's ridiculous that you had to spend so much just to find out there was squat wrong with him. Life's not fair.

  • I know his appearance isn't the point of this video, but he is SO cute! Anyways, my dog has been doing this after she eats but she doesn't walk around, and all I rub her throat because she used to throw up her food but she stopped. I went to the vet yesterday and they gave me some medicine but she keeps doing this, should I be worried?

  • THANK YOU FOR ADDING THIS!

I own a Maltese/Silky and he does this every now and then. Only this morning I was woken up to him doing it, but consistently for about 30minutes. Took him to the Vet....he now has a swollen throat and a high temperature, there also taking him in for x-rays. I don't know if the two are linked. Maybe he just needed to clear his nose/throat more because it was inflamed ?

I am hoping for a proper diagnosis though.

    Jess x.

  • Thanks for tht I didn't know what it was and my dog randomly did tht but a lot louder I thought she was choking

  • Sparkey boy, I love and miss you <3 sending you tones of kisses

    hugs

    Kat

  • @katkoota Snowy & Crystal, the coolest malts in the world. we miss you too. ~Sparkey

  • Sparky,

Block the dogs nostril off with your palm. or finger tips. that should stop it, Its also known as to vets as inspiratory paroxysmal respiration, its common to dogs in a squashed in or brachycephalic face. another tip. rub the front of his neck while you

block the dogs nostrills. It is NOT a stress mechanism. in most cases it stops by itself.

    Regards,

    Mitch...

  • My jack Russell does this to. I call it a snof. It's seems to happen when they over breath almost like hyperventilating. He also does it when he is going to eat. Its almost like he starts to gag on his spit when he salivates. My opinion and I am no expert is that it has to do with some kind of stress mechanism. because they seem to do it when they get excited.

  • Reverse sneezing isn't known to be harmful but seems a little cruel to just video tape him while its happening because you can tell its distressing to him. I always try to rub his throat to help it stop or just pet him to help calm him down.

  • @emberrozay I'm sorry but I needed a video to show my vet while petting him would not do anything for him to get some answers. But I don't believe in stopping it anyway, imagine you want to sneeze and someone comes and plugs your nose up. If you notice at around 1:12 I asked him if he is ok and petted him and stopped. I think it's cruel not to try and find out what is causing it. My vet was very happy that I did this because I couldn't explain to him before. But I understand how you feel.

  • @sparkey I agree with you, My two dogs have been doing the same and I am thankful for people like you that helped me found out what it was all about.

  • @sparkey great work, I have to film my dog doing this for my vet...and yes it is so hard to explain it to a Vet..My Dog started at 3.30am on Tuesday morning.. scared the living day lights out of me.

  • @emberrozay Personally, I'm glad they added this video. My Maltese literally just did this seconds ago and I looked it up to figure out what it could be. I'm glad there are people out there who post videos to help others figure out diagnoses for their pets. Even if it was unintentional, I sense no ill intention with the posting of this vid.

  • @Namurashi Thank you

  • cute dog

  • my maltese does this too...thank god i found this post..i thot she had something wrong in her lungs !

  • I have a Maltese also, and i also was woried about this strange noises he was making :( but thanks, now i know :)

  • My dog had this problem and she ended up dying of heart failure because she could not get oxygen into her lungs

  • my dog dosent sound like this.....he brethes in through his nose like a pig

  • i get sooo scared when my dog does thisss ! :(

  • Thank you for adding this video. My toy poodle recently moved to a colder and dryer climate and all of a sudden began heaving (periodically). Needless to say, I completely freaked out! Glad to know this is a common issue.

  • My maltese, Bing does that too, ususally when he gets excited. I guess it's their breed? Don't you just love them, they are soooo cute.

  • My maltese does this too. He almost sounds like a pig while doing so :)

He eventually stops with a real 'atchoo' sneeze. At first, it was quite scary but now we're used to it

  • Can anyone help my my maltese is doing this weird noise nwith her nose like its mucus or something.. i don't know how to explain it but it doesn't sound like this or a cough...sometimes when she gets excited it happens

  • when your dog is reverse sneezing you can close his/her nose with your fingers to help!

  • i will gladly watch 2 mins of your dog...hes friggin adorable!

  • Aww my dog does this...it scared me but now i feel relieved

  • This has happened to my dog. Although it definitely sounds unsettling, it's not serious or life-threatening. We thought my dog did this because he accidentally got fur caught in his nose, and he's trying to sneeze it out.

  • pourquoi il tousse comme ca?

  • I have a 1/2 Maltese, 1/2 Yorkie. She is 2.5 years old and has the same problem. The vet prescribed 1/2 tab per 10 pounds, of the pink tablet Benadryl a few times a week. It does seem to help. The vet said of course to NEVER use a leash around the neck, only a harness, like you, on any dog. I have also read that saline nose spray is safe for dogs - I have not verified this yet. It seems like she has a stuffy nose and that the dust, grass, etc. does seem to trigger it. Thank you, darling dog!

  • im glad i found this my chipoo been doing this too it scared the crap outta me

  • hey my dog does it too when she get excited seeing my mom come home from work or golfing, church etc. she does it too.

  • how old is he/she

  • I just learned a way to help my little Maltese when he is reverse sneezing (I find this situation terrifying, sometimes it gets really bad). I just block his nostrils by laying my finger across them. Just learned it a few days ago, and only tried it once, but it stopped him almost right away.

  • INdeed my doggie does sometimes do this to .. last time it whas a bit when he whas sick ..but this dog seems not to be sick or something ...

  • It's actually similar to an anxiety attack.

  • Thanks for the upload. I just got a baby maltese, she is 3 months old and she does the same thing. It really freaked me out. I thought she was sick or something but our vet said shes reverse sneezing. This was a good example. Btw ur Sparky is adorable.

  • The blonde hardwood (probably Pergo) is SOOO 1995.

  • my dog is doing it and its very scary

  • My dog makes the same noise and we were worried about her thanks for posting this! How do you treat this?

  • I don't do anything to treat it. it is like if he wants to clear his nose and I let him. in this video it went on longer than usual and now that he is older he does it less often.

  • @missy48059 my dog also does this daily and one night it got very bad. the vet told us to give her some childrens liquid benedryl every 12 hours to help clear up anything that could be in her sinus'.

  • @missy48059 my sister told me that when our shih tzu does it, try covering his nose?

  • We had a boston terrier that reversed sneezed and was told by the vet if you cover his nose with your hand, so he couldnt breath for a few seconds, it would stop. Sure enough this did work

  • Thanks for posting this!

I'm 99% sure this is what's happening to Lily, so we can stop worrying now!

  • I had a pom named Smokey who did this but the vet said that he had a collapsible trachea, maybe he was just reverse sneezing.

  • Thanks for posting this video. It's a very hard thing to describe to anyone & seeing these videos really helps us to feel like it's the lesser of 2 evils (reverse sneeze vs. collapsing trachea) I've a 1 yr old MaltiPoo (he looks just like your Sparky!) that does this same thing. But it never happens when we're at the vet! I told the vet about it and she said it's most likely the reverse sneeze. He's also been doing this since we got him at 16 wks & collapsing trachea is generally in older dogs.

  • Poor little guy. I hope it doesn't hurt him to do that.

I am very envious of how cute your dog is! I totally want a Maltese now.

  • I actually grab my jar of ‘Vicks VapoRub’ and hold it a little way from his nose. This seems to relieve him and open up his airways. What I also find helps is spraying a ‘Non-Medicated Isotonic Saline Solution’ (saltwater nasal spray) towards his nose (not directly in his face or up his nose) and this provides a natural relief from the congestion/ reverse sneezing :)

  • i have a 10pd , 1 year old Dash-Poo. was told by my Vet that some animal have it and nothing to be worried about. i comfort her whenever i can, but seems there is no treatments and does no harm. is that right?

  • Thank you my Bichon does this, called vet said she is ok and no harm but it was scarey

  • what city are you guys in? The women I bought my dog off of is looking for a male maltese to mate. he is too cute!!

  • We have a 1 1/2 year old Maltese named Mocha Latte, she is a bossy bitch!! LOL

  • My dog has the exact same thing! I feel so sorry for them when they do that...

  • Oh Sparkey is a little doll...I have a male chihuahua 1 year old that did this the other day and I honestly did not think we would make it to the vet's I called them and as soon as I started saying the symptoms they stopped me and told me what it was and it is exactly like Sparkey...Hope he is ok

  • This first time my silky did this i nearly had a fit lol, mum told me it was just backwards sneezing.

  • omg my dog that also..recntly shes been doing it alot and it freaks me out.i just try to calm her down when she gets lke that...but also i think my dogs nose is stuffy so i get more freaked out..what should i do? i also have a maltese and shes gnna be 2 soon.

  • omg my dog does that too! he is a bichon frise mix. all you have to do is put you fingers over his nostrales and he'll stop. If he doesn't then, you should get him checked by a doctor

  • aww so cute and adorable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Have you people checked your dogs if they have "nose-parasites"? Its a common symptom that dogs do reverse sneezes when they have this.

  • This helped a lot.

My pomeranian has been doing the same thing when he gets overexcited.

  • My 4mth old min pin started making that sound a few min. ago. Thank You 4 this video. She stopped now. But, she scared the crap out of me. By the way ur baby is ADORABLE!

  • I have a pup that does this also. Just a note... I notice cute little sparkey does the bunny hop. Have you had his knees checked? Could be luxating patellas. He's a doll.

  • thanks, vet said his knees are good. with these white fluffs they always check for that. I noticed you have 2 cute ones too.

  • watching this makes me think of my poor baby D: i wonder if it hurts them at all

  • hahahaa so cute face !!!

  • What a cute little fluff ball.

  • Kennel Cough?

  • yeah i have a chihuahua too, she reverse sneezes a lot and it scares the crap out of me. But unlike your dog, she is not able to move while doing it....

  • Really helpful video. My chihuahua has started doing this and although it looks quite worrying it quickly subsides. Great to have something to compare the noise to as i think searching the internet for reasons can sometimes bring out the crazy hyperchondriac in me.

  • y does that happen?

it happens to my dog too:D

  • My mal-Shi does this only when all windows are closed and the radiator is high on,it makes my nose and throat feel dry now imagine what it does to the little guy.god bless you and your little buddy.

  • Would that be a allergic problem?

My little shiba had the same symptom before!

I tried to remove any substances that can cause an alergy!

Ultimately I found it is the Lemongrass essential oil result in reverse sneezing!!

( the symptom never appeared again!)

  • P.S. My little Bella does this same kind of wheezing noise if I am gone for a long time and then come home, or anything else that gets her overly excited. I was told it was a tracheal collapse, or something due to the effect of her wind pipe constricting. I usually just try to keep her calm until it subsides, which can be from ten seconds to a couple of minutes. I have her drink some water and then I let her exert her charge of energy.

  • It looks like your dog may have a luxated patella (sp). My maltese underwent surgery for hers, and it was well worth it. I noticed your dog pick up his back leg and hop down the hallway a little, as well as some other less noticeable quirks that remind me of what my maltese used to do. You may already know this or haven't noticed the gradual onset of what looks like an adorable personality trait, but really may be a moving kneecap which can cause severe pain down the line. Take care of Spark!

  • oh, I didn't notice that in the video. I see it now. I think it's just an itchy paw or he thinks he stepped on something. first time he did it I took him to the vet, that was 4 years ago and he didn't have LP. this video is from 3 years ago. maybe it is grade 1 and they can't detect it? he doesn't seems to be in pain or do this more than a few seconds in 6 months. thanks for telling me, his annual check up is coming up soon so I will ask again.

  • I have a yorkie/maltese mix and he do this and i never knew what it was thanks for this video. Oh and they look alike except he is silver.

  • my maltese did this for 10 years, it was so cute/disgusting

  • Ive got two toy poodles who are just over a year old and they started doing this about two months ago, I thought it was fluid in their nostrils?

We lost our first toy poodle last year, he did it too and for most of his life, he was fifteen when he died.

  • It's caused by an abnormality in the nasopharynx, it doesn't close, getting them to swallow will stop it. Best way to do that is to put your fingers over the nose and/or stroking their throat and slightly opening their mouth :)

  • My puppy ate a chicken bone 3 weeks ago and was acting as if he tried to throw up the bone. But he's better now!

  • Don't let your dog get a hold of another chicken bone! Very dangerous- it was splinter and cut their throat.

:3 Just a watch out for him.

  • @shinocicada shut up

  • @Amelia102938 LOL, now you're attacking me on THIS video! On a comment I made a year ago, that was only helpful?!

XD What's your problem?! This has nothing to even do with you. <:/ How'd you track this comment anyway? I know you're pissed because I told you pine was bad for your hamster, but you don't have to follow my comments, dude. Kind of weird..

Lets not spam this page with another one sided arguement please?

  • @gevoman1 who gives a damn

  • it looks like he needed to throw up.

  • no,in a tracheal collapse the dog would be making a coughing sound instead of sharp snorts

  • My 9 year old Chihuahua has been doing this for the past 2 or 3 days and I'm worried :(

  • =) i have a little Maltese it looks at her video they are amusing indeed and sweets.hi for everybody

  • My Pom who is 6 months does this but I recently found that perfumed shampoos may be the cause or Exacerbates it.

  • Thanks so much for adding this video! I have a maltese and he (and his brother) does sounds like this and it gets me worried. Now I possibly know what the sympthons are called.

  • thats so cute. look at my maltese!

  • wait, i have a 9 week old maltese puppy.. i have 2 maltese..one is 5 the younger one started making these noises at night and the morning..i thought it was kennel cough so i gave him clavarox(the breeder gave it to me just incase) and fed him .3 mL...after that he hasnt made the noise, however i saw this video and he seems to make the SAMEmnoise! also when he makes this noise he does not open his mouth like us humans do when we cough..he closes his mouth and gags at the end.. any suggestions?

  • My maltese also does this, but I think he is doing it to scratch the inside of his ears.

  • My maltese does this all the time too. x]

  • my maltese does this too and shes done it for years i would take her to the vet and they would never know what it was and wow it so simple it just reverse sneezing. my dog usually does it when she gets over excited.

  • Aww~~ Super Super ADORABLE~~

    looks just like my PiPi~~

  • Very cute dog!! I have one that does this too.. I also have one with collasped trachea and you can tell the difference.

  • One of our maltese does that too. Usually because she either eats or drinks too fast.

  • my maltese is totally the same :)

  • I have two maltese who do the same thing. My vet says it like acid reflux. I have to give them pepcid. 1/4 of one and it goes away temporarily. Your maltese is PRECIOUS

  • my chiuhahua does that TOO!! i will have to record him and send you a video response.

  • dont let its adorble, innocent face fool you!!! he's a trained killing machine!!

  • how cute!

how do you keep sparky's coat so white? i'm trying to find something to remove my maltepoo's tear stains.

  • Angel Eyes. You can get it on Ebay. Also, if you give yours bottled or filtered water and not tap water, that helps.

  • Be careful about some of the things you use. Some of them have antibiotics in them such as Angel Eyes. I found the best thing is to wash their face with a warm cloth each night. My Malt had terrible tearing stains, but now, she is white as snow. No chemicals needed!

  • isn't that kennel cough?

  • I am so happy to know this is not a serious issue. My 4 month old Maltese started doing this out of nowhere yesterday and again today. I had been researching all day what was going on and now feel confident this is the same thing. I will follow up with my vet to make sure. Thanks for posting the video! I feel relief!!!

  • thanx for the video. i thought my pomeranian was dying or something he just started doing this the other day. the vet told me to look this up.... whew now i can get some sleep. cute dog by the way

  • That's a "snork." My dogs do that too.

  • I didn't know it was reversed sneezing, i thought it came from excitement. The throat closes and causes that sound.

  • omg my dog just started doing this also, he is a pom, i thought it was from him wearing a neck collar..does your dog sometimes honk like he is coughing up a hairball?

  • what a cute maltese !

my pomeranian does that, i always thought he just ate too fast. haha.

  • my maltese does the exact same thing! it sounds like he is hypervenilating (sp?) haha they're the cutest and sweetest dogs!

  • I love the maltese breed they are so cute. My neighbor has one, she is so friendly and affectionate.

  • Your maltese is very cute...

I have 4 maltese and all of them do the same thing.

  • My dog is a maltese and he does the exact same thing.

  • why does reverse sneezing happen?

  • My Maltese, also named SPARKY, does this but only after drinking. The way your dog does it, it looks like a spasm. Our dog is fine until he drinks, then it sounds like he is drowning. Now we are worried because he doesn't drink very much and we are afraid he may be dehydrated.

  • That is exactly what my Maltese does. Only when he's drinking. When he's lapping up the water he sounds like he's inhaling the water. He does sneeze, though not in reverse (smile). This little guy sounds like he has asthma, too.

  • This is what my schnauzer puppy started doing recently. The vet said it was reverse sneezing and he's probably allergic to pollen since it's spring. She suggested we wipe him down w/ a wet cloth after going outside and rinse him once a week. She also prescribed benadryl.

  • i had a yorkshire terrier that done this and was told he had a collapsed trachea by the vet, plus he had fluid around his heart which he was put on tabs for, and like i say he done the exact same thing, so for all you people out there that are unsure why your dogs are doing this, please go to your vet to make sure, as my dog also couldn,t catch his breath and used to pass out, better 2 b safe than sorry.

  • I agree, sometimes this could be also symptoms for collapsed trachea or heart problems.

  • I have a shit zu

and he has been doing this for a week straight.

do you know if it causes any health conditions?

i am so scared it breaks my heart to see him doing this

    please someone write back.

  • morgie, my maltese does this too and thats the same response i got from his vet, that he reverse sneezes. i always feel helpless, because it sounds like hes choking. thanks for posting this for people that arent aware.

  • he is trying to learn how to breath underwater and is only doing the reverse sneezing in the kitchen or tiled rooms. for when he becomes a superdog.

  • my dog does this every single day, i wonder if its normal cause my other dog does not do this everyday

  • my dog just did something similar to this today, and i'm scared i don't know why he did it, =(

  • is he okay now????

  • My Maltese does the same thing, usually after drinking water! It scares me, I think she is choking. Glad to see it is quite common!

  • Ahaha my maltese does the exact same thing when he has to sneeze. First he sounds like a pig and then suddenly he goes 'hatsjie'

  • I absolutely love Malteses, they are so cute. I have a one year old, and she has a reverse sneezing problem. These dogs are the most gentle and crazy(sometimes) breed I have ever had. Mine loves to cuddle.

  • Yeah, this is "paroxysmal respirations" or reverse sneezing (lay term), as you say. This is MUCH different than a condition of collapsed trachea!!! COLLAPSED TRACHEA is a SERIOUS condition. Do not confuse the two. If you say your vet told you it's the same thing, you've misinterpreted what he/she said.

Paroxysmal respirations is a reflex condition of the soft palate in dogs, & not dangerous; most common in brachiocephalic breeds, such as bulldogs.

  • he's so cute

  • my bt puppy dizzy has done that before. 5 stars for this cutie pie!

  • Thats cute

  • Very exciting video, I could hardly contain myself.

  • Your Maltese is beautiful! Such a pure white face, too. ^_^

  • :) !uoy sselb
